Fisher-Price gets into the Portable DVR act

by Mark R

I’m sure that we all associate Fisher-Price with hard plastic toys, but at CES, they have now shifted into a different market with their Kid-Tough Portable DVR.

The Kid-Tough Portable DVR comes with a base unit that connects with the television, and serves as a charging cradle. It can then record your children’s favorite shows, provided you leave the television on that channel. Just to let you know, you can program it 24 hours before the broadcast.

It can accommodate about 2 hours of content, with additional memory via micro SD card slot. It can accommodate about 4-6 hours worth of playing time. Unfortunately, you cannot watch a program saved on the SD card from any other device except the Fisher-Price Kid-Tough Portable DVR (it’s a copyright issue).

i’m Watch smart time piece looks decent enough

by Edwin

How many of us wear a smart watch to go alongside a smartphone? Granted, the smart watch market is not exactly a growing and vibrant one, but that does not mean nothing cool is made available from time to time. Check out the i’m Watch timepiece from Italy that has the aesthetics to go along with the hardware. While being nearly the same size as that of the iPod nano, it comes with a curved glass display and even better is the fact that depending on how deep your pockets are, you are able to get it in just about any material you like, ranging from aluminum to gold to carbon. Of course, I do not think enriched uranium is part of the equation here.

Android 1.6 (how primitive, but it is all that is required) will be the operating system of choice, where the i’m Watch will feature music-playback capability, Twitter and Facebook clients, weather reports, access to an app store and Bluetooth connectivity for use with your smartphone. The touchscreen works as it is supposed to be, but otherwise, nothing else helps it stand out from the crowd. I guess you can say that luxury is the main selling point of the i’m Watch, with basic models starting from $299 upwards, depending on your material of choice.

T-Mobile announces Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G

by Edwin

T-Mobile has just announced another smartphone that will be made available to the masses - the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G. This is another handset that will fall under T-Mobile’s range of 4G devices, the third actually, where the Galaxy S Blaze 4G will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 processor that runs on dual-cores at 1.5GHz. Not only that, your eyes will also appreciate the brilliant Super AMOLED touch screen display alongside a host of pre-loaded entertainment to help you get started right out of the box. No idea on pricing, but we do know that the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G is being prepared for a release slightly down the road. Patience, my friend, is the key to unlocking its promise. I would suppose it runs on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, although whether an Ice Cream Sandwich update is coming down the road or not remains to be seen.

Andrew Sherrard, senior vice president, marketing, T-Mobile USA, has this to say, “Consumers want the accessibility and entertainment capabilities that smartphones offer, and we’re committed to providing a range of 4G device options. The Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G is the latest smartphone that enables consumers to unlock the full potential of T-Mobile’s faster 4G network. With a compelling set of entertainment features, paired with our Unlimited Value and Monthly4G plans, we’re continuing to make it easy and affordable for consumers to experience the benefits of 4G.”

Dell XPS 13 laptop is part of the Ultrabook brigade

by Edwin

It seems that this is set to be the year of the Ultrabook, as companies that dabble with notebooks churn out one model after another with the intention of eating into Apple’s MacBook Air market. Dell does not want to be left out of the game either, and their latest foray into the Ultrabook market would come in the form of the Dell XPS 13. The XPS 13 is said to be the most compact 13.3″ Ultrabook to date, boasting an edge-to-edge glass, near “frameless” display, coupled with all-day battery life (claimed, and not tested yet) as well as all the relevant bells and whistles, crammed into a body that tips the scales at just 2.99 lbs, while measuring under 02.5″ at its thinnest point. Let us look at what else the Dell XPS 13 holds underneath the hood after the jump.

Samsung introduces the inTouch camera for the HDTV

by Mark R

Some of you might remember when we covered the Biscotti, which enables HDTV video chats. Samsung recently unveiled a similar product with the inTouch.

The inTouch is a 3 Megapixel camera that is designed for video chats, and a lot more. Unlike the Biscotti, which allows for communicating with GTalk members and other Biscotti users, the InTouch uses Skype, a very popular video chatting application.

The inTouch also comes with a remote control that has a QWERTY keyboard plus a numerical one. This is also an improvement over a Biscotti, as the remote only allows for arrow keys and makes it very difficult in setting up or entering in contact information. This keyboard will enable you for web browsing.

Parrot AR.Drone gets a 2.0 model

by Mark R

We have been following the status of Parrot’s AR.Drone since it was first revealed at CES two years ago. At CES this year, Parrot has officially introduced the AR.Drone 2.0.

The flying quadricopter has a new camera, software, as well as a new look. What you see in the picture is its “outdoor hull” which is designed to reduce wind resistance. It still has the old mod with secondary hull to protect the blades.

The camera for the AR.Drone 2.0 is in 1280 x 720 resolution, to show a view from the sky. A piloting application known as AR.FreeFlight 2.0 allows the user to record their own HD videos, to watch or share with other AR.Drone users.

Another development is “Absolute Flight” which allows the AR.Drone 2.0 to connect to a device via Wi-Fi, and all on-board instruments will appear on screen with a cockpit view. The AR.Drone 2.0 will also have some light-emitting diodes positioned on the landing gear that will help the pilot track the orientation of the AR.Drone 2.0 in flight.

The AR.Drone 2.0 also has some new stabilizers so it will stay in flight, and Parrot is working to provide developers with a new software development kit. You should be seeing the AR.Drone 2.0 sometime in Q2 2012 for a price of about $299.
