Toshiba Tablet PC review (and what’s good to load on a new machine)

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

toshiba lappy tabletSo as mentioned, I’ ordered and received my Toshiba Tablet PC,

well it’s here! I want to be careful of what I load so it stays light, mean and useful.

Its loaded with a CD-R/DVD, loads of RAM and power, built in thumb print scanner and SD card reader. Best of all, a wonderful stylus that allows me to draw on the screen. It just rocks.

The thumb print scanner seemed useless, until I realized that my ridiculously long password is a thing of the past, I just need to swipe my finger,, I’m starting to like that convenience.

As for the stylus control, it could be a tad tighter, but it’s still miles better than even the best Wacom pad (trust me, I’ve been using them for years!)

The SD card reader being built in is just great, it’s already saved me from having to go home with loaded cards, I just blast em in there and keep taking pictures!

Here is the software I’ve loaded so far (you have to keep reading).

The newest theories on building the great pyramid (in 3d!)

Friday, March 30th, 2007

What?! Pyramids?! On a gadget blog?!

pyramid

Yes, here’s why. A French archaeologist Jean-Pierre Houdin teamed up with Dassault Systems (they make Solidworks, my favorite 3d modelling software) to showcase Houdin’s newest theories about how the pyramids were made. It tips a lot of the older theories of construction on their heads.

Houdin’s theories are rather impressive, simple, and direct at demonstrating how the great pyramid could actually have been completed. A combination with clever pulleys, counterweights, sledges, lifts, and internal ramps that protected workers from both the sun and loose debris from outside. Check out the 3d presentation over at Dassault Systems.

Tablet PC battle!!! (Help me pick which one to get!)

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

You’ve heard me whine and moan for a Mac tablet for a while now.

Well, I’m done. So far, they’ve not said a darn thing about doing it (umm ya do have more than half the graphic designer market, why not give them a way to enjoy drawing on the screen?)

Ok, I’ve vented, now on to business, there are two main questions I’m trying to settle before making the purchase, they are as follows:

1. Vista or XP?

2. Pick between these 4 machines

A. Fujitsu 4215

B. Lenovo X60

C. Asus RF1

D. Gateway NX860XL

I’m sure you’ve already asked where’s the Toshiba? I’ve already ruled that one out, (or prove me wrong, and list why).

Here’s what I’m looking for:

Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz

2 Gb of Ram

best video card available in this form factor

largest cleanest screen possible

7200rpm HD 60Gb or higher

bluetooth

integrated CDR-DVD-R

integrated WiFi (at least to g)

Coolest Gadgets

Yeah, so there are waaayy too many Apple Rumors coming around prior to Unky Steve’s upcoming announcements.

Sadly, I don’t want what’s likely to be offered, here’s what I want.

A Macbook Pro Tablet!!!

This is exactly what Apple has been missing (in my opinion), however, these are people that still sell mice with 1 button (umm what’s simpler than a stylus?)

As a designer, I have stayed away from the Apple platform due to it’s lack of interoperability with my beloved SolidWorks. It’s a solid 3d modeler that works great, and works with everything! (plus it’s compatible with the next engine, but this article isn’t about that).

Mac tablet

Here’s what we kinda know from Kevin Rose (digg.com)

there’s a 4Gb and 8Gb iPhone, they work with all the cell providers, one’s got a slideout keyboard, and one is a virtual clickwheel model.

What we know for sure is NOTHING!!! (I love that Apple can really keep a secret, it makes people drool needlessly! Hysterical!

So here’s what I want. (keep clicking kids!)

Dreams nearly fulfilled, Thank you Fujitsu,,, NOW GIMME my lappy!!!

Saturday, November 4th, 2006

You know as a kid, a slightly balding man, or a woman, you always wanted a Ferrari, admit it. Well computers are kind of the same; you always wanted power, monstrous power, and a convenient, easy way to interact with it. Well for many of you, that occurred in the past few years when laptops embedded with wireless functions and large amounts or ram and power, enabled programmers, and businesspeople alike to do nearly anything and everything they’ve wanted to.
