When it comes to the world of hard drives, you can be sure that Western Digital is not a name to be trifled with – they have rolled out their fair share of champions before, and not only that, they also have a range of hard drives to cater to just about any kind of budget – or need. This time around, it looks like the WD Red Pro hard drive range has gotten a refresh, so much so that the amount of data that you can stash inside one of these bad boys will amount up to 6TB, thanks to the release of the new 5TB and 6TB capacity models.
Just which particular market will the WD Red Pro range target? It is ideal for NAS (network attached storage) systems that carry up to 16 drive bays, as well as to serve businesses which require more expansive storage needs as opposed to the standard WD Red drives. Already starting to ship, the WD Red Pro 5TB and 6TB drives will leverage an enhanced design as well as 128MB cache in order to deliver data transfer rates of 214 megabytes per second (MB/s). WD’s NASware 3.0 will also boast of technology that promote data protection, high NAS performance and reliable integration.
With the WD Red Pro 6TB hard drive, it will sport features such as up to 16 Bay Shock Protection. This is made possible thanks to a multi- axis shock sensor, as the drive automatically detects subtle shock events and, accompanied by dynamic fly height technology, make adjustments to each read-write function in order to compensate and protect the data, which will further protect the drive in large 1- to 16-bay NAS environments.
NASware 3.0 happens to be an exclusive advanced firmware that enables seamless integration, robust data protection and optimal performance for systems operating in the demanding NAS environment. There is also Vibration Protection that boasts of hardware vibration compensation technology. Such technology monitors the drive to correct both linear and rotational vibration in real time, at the same time increasing drive reliability and enabling high performance in higher vibration systems as a result from drive to drive vibration as well as from the high speed fans used to cool the larger systems.
All purchases come with a 5-year limited warranty. The WD Red Pro will retail for $269 and $299 for the 5TB and 6TB models, respectively.
