Losing your keys in general makes for a pretty bad day. It’s about a hundred times worse when you lose them in the middle of an ocean with absolutely no chance of retrieving them.
The Key Buoy, which is billed as the “ultimate key fob for boaters” will help you find your keys if they ever end up overboard in the middle of the Pacific.
The fob itself will fit onto any keychain, and is relatively small. The magic happens the when the fob is submersed in water, it will open up and release an orange tube that automatically inflates with air.
It may take up to 30 seconds to fully inflate, but when it does, you’ll be able to see the orange tube pretty clearly. The tube stands 14” tall when fully inflated.
The Key Buoy does have its limits, it will only support 120 grams/4.2 ounces. Anything heavier will put your keys, along with that paper weight, on the bottom of the Pacific.
You can’t simply “deflate” your Key Buoy and expect it to work again, these are one time use products, so if you’re one for bad luck, having a spare around wouldn’t hurt.
For anybody who owns or spends time on a boat regularly, attaching a Key Buoy to your keys would be the smart choice. They’re available from Davis, although there site isn’t designed very well and there is no price listed, it seems like you have to order a . . . catalog!
