Domestic Transformer turns 344-foot square space into 24-room house

This is one of those posts where I think you should just watch the video (located after the jump) and read about it.

This is Gary Chang’s “Domestic Transformer”, located in the heart of Hong Kong. It is one of the most populated cities on Earth, and Gary Chang has made his typical 344 square foot living space into a 24-room house.

It is possible with sliding walls. What you see here is his 2-meter wide kitchen, which is located behind his bookcase. If he wants the bookcase back, he folds up the kitchen and pushes it against the wall.

He even has a bathtub and fold-down bed on another wall. The walls are on railings on the ceiling, and he has mirrors on the ceiling to cover them up.

The mirrors also serve as a reflective area for the windows that you see here. These windows create a warm bath of light that Gary says makes him happy, even with bad weather.

In all honesty, my living area is pretty small, and I wouldn’t mind turning my home into one of my Domestic Transformers. I’m sure it would be pretty time-consuming to get all the railings and walls into place, though.

Still, I admire Gary Chang’s initiative to try and make a small place big. I think he succeeded.

  1. Out of necessity springs forth genius. Best gadgets always arrive from someone needing help to improve their life. This guy is pretty smart. I approve his house… Now when can he transform my studio apartment like that lmao!
