Apple sees over 25 billion apps downloaded

There is an app for everything – or so this is what Apple claims. I guess they are more or less correct, and it goes without saying that with the sheer number of iPhones and iPads sold to date, you can bet your bottom dollar that the total amount of apps to go along with these devices would be phenomenal. This proved to be true, with Apple proudly announcing recently that over 25 billion apps from their App Store has been downloaded, making their way to over 315 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices around the world. This means around 4 apps for each person here on planet earth. The 25 billionth app that was downloaded was Where’s My Water? Free, where Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China, gets his 15 minutes of fame for this ‘feat’. Since he was the winner of the App Store Countdown to 25 Billion Apps, Chunli Fu picked up a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card in the process. For someone who lives in China, that is a huge amount of money (and is a handsome sum in any developed country, too). Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, says, “We’d like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve this historic milestone of 25 billion apps downloaded. When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users.” Currently, the App Store has over 550,000 apps to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users that are spread in 123 countries around the world, and the iPad alone has more than 170,000 native iPad apps. App Store customers are able to pick from an incredible range of apps in 21 categories, including Newsstand, games, business, news, sports, health & fitness and travel. So far, the sheer volume of the App Store is also a handsome paymaster, regarded to have paid out over four billion dollars to developers. Are you jumping aboard the Apple bandwagon just yet?
