How We Picked

There is something to be said for spending time in the great outdoors. The fresh air and beautiful landscapes seem to be able to melt away all of your problems. Nothing could make the experience better – except a cup of coffee in the morning.

Coffee has a way of making everything better. Whether you are a casual drinker or you cannot make it through the day without a full pot, coffee is an essential part of every day. Millions are made daily and coffee shops, cafés, bistros, and even convenience stores from the sale of coffee. But, what happens when you go on a camping trip?

Where’s the coffee?

Unfortunately, coffee seems to take a backseat to adventure. But, it does not have to be that way. In fact, there are plenty of camping coffee makers that can brew a flavorful, aroma-filled, soul-touching cup of coffee.

Today, we are going to show you the ten best camping coffee makers for 2020. We have looked at hundreds of models and these are the ones that consistently ranked the best. We looked at portability, functionality, ease of use, weight, maintenance, and several other factors.

Coleman QuikPot Propane Camping Coffee Maker

Coleman QuikPot Propane Camping Coffee Maker

Specs:

  • Fuel Source: Propane
  • Number Of Cups: 10
  • Weight: 10.9 Pounds

When you think of the outdoors, it’s impossible not to think about Coleman. They’ve ingrained themselves into the very fabric of the outdoors. Which is why this Coleman QuikPot had to be on our list.

Coleman QuikPot stored in the bag

This is one of the larger coffee makers in our top ten, but it essentially brings the kitchen to the outdoors. For starters, it comes with a glass carafe that can hold up to ten cups of coffee. Being that this is for the outdoors, we would have preferred a double-walled carafe for insulation purposes, but the QuikPot does have a warming feature that can be used to keep the coffee warm until the pot is gone.

As far as weight is concerned, this is a little bulky/heavy. At 10.9 pounds, it’ll make a long hike a little more grueling. Of course, you’ll also need to make sure that you have a propane bottle handy. We recommend the Coleman 16oz. Propane Cylinder which should easily last you for a full week of adventure. Coleman claims that you can make coffee for 4.5 total hours before the tank will run out. Since each pot takes around 20 minutes to make, that would give you a total of 13.5 pots or 135 cups of coffee.

Coleman QuikPot Propane tank

As this is a fairly large setup, make sure to protect it from accidental bumps and other “oops” moments. If you prefer, Coleman does offer a protective cover that can be placed around it for an extra layer of security/comfort.

What We Like

Bringing the kitchen to the outdoors seemed almost impossible, but Coleman has turned camping into an outdoor wonderland. The ten-cup carafe combined with the propane-fueled heater makes some soul-touching coffee in record time.

Here is a great review by Taras Kul:

Overall

This is perfect for the coffee lovers who also love adventure. Sure, it’s a little big and heavy, but you’ll quickly forget about that when you drink your first cup of coffee while admiring a beautiful sunrise over the lake.

Primula Single-Serve Coffee Brew Buddy

Primula Single-Serve Coffee Brew Buddy

Specs:

  • Fuel Source: None
  • Number Of Cups: 1
  • Weight: 1.6 Ounces

When single-serve coffee makers first came out, everyone jumped on the “gimmick” train. But what was initially viewed as a gimmick has become commonplace in almost every home and office in America – the Keurig. While this isn’t a Keurig product, it most definitely will handle your outdoor single-serve coffee needs quite well.

Primula Single-Serve Coffee Brew Buddy with coffee beans

This is an extremely small “coffee maker” that can make one cup of coffee as weak or as strong as you want. It does not come with a carafe or a cup, but rather it simply comes with an oversized lid to fit over most cups/mugs and an integrated filter. That’s it! You will need to provide the coffee grounds, the hot water, and the cup.

Primula Single-Serve Coffee Brew Buddy after the coffee is done

This easily tucks away in any compartment of your backpack (or pocket) and weighs almost nothing; your coffee grounds will weigh more. To get a perfect cup of coffee you need to follow these steps:

  1. Heat Water
  2. Place Lid Over Cup
  3. Put Coffee Grounds Into Filter
  4. Pour Water Over Coffee Grounds
  5. Enjoy Coffee

Sure, this won’t make ten cups of coffee for everyone, but this isn’t meant for the whole family. It’s meant to give you the perfect cup of coffee in the morning (or any other time) without creating a huge mess.

What We Like

When you are camping, having to lug around a lot of extra equipment can become more of a problem then it is worth. This is literally less than 2 extra ounces of weight; hardly enough to be noticed. It hides away easily and works great for a single cup of coffee.

Overall

Sometimes, it’s easy to make camping complicated. With all the equipment that we “need”, we can quickly become overwhelmed. For the coffee lovers, this can be even more of a problem. But, the Primula Single-Serve Coffee Maker isn’t complicated. So, forget the K-Cups; just bring this and your favorite coffee grinds and you’re set.

MOSFiATA Portable Coffee Maker

MOSFiATA Portable Coffee Maker

Specs:

  • Fuel Source: Internal Rechargeable Battery
  • Number Of Cups: 1
  • Weight: 12.8 Ounces

Just the name alone makes you think of quaint bistro nestled on a busy tourist center. While this won’t make your favorite espresso or latte, it will make a good, strong cup of coffee.

MOSFiATA Portable Coffee Maker measurements

For those who love the K-Cups, this is a life-saver. Everything you need is packaged up nicely in this portable coffee maker. This is the size of a 24oz. tumbler, but has everything to make your perfect cup of morning joe. In fact, it comes with its own cup, along with the K-Cup reusable filter/mounting pod, water tank, and powered pump. All you have to do is make sure you insert your favorite K-Cup/coffee grounds, pour in some boiling water, and press the start button. In less than 30 seconds, you’ll have a hot cup of coffee just the way you like it.

MOSFiATA Portable Coffee Maker in the outdoors on a camping trip

This is an extremely portable option that can be carried in the water bottle holder on most backpacks. In fact, it’s so versatile that it can be used in the car, at the office, or any other place where a tumbler wouldn’t look out of place. It weighs less than 13 ounces, so it’s not very heavy either. All you need to make it work is hot water and two “AA” batteries.

MOSFiATA Portable Coffee Maker in a car

What We Like

Almost every camper/hiker has a backpack with a water bottle holder. This will fit perfectly without any issues whatsoever. The pressurized system ensures a clean, hot cup of coffee every time.

Overall

Even though the batteries only feed the pump motor (we wish it would have heated the water up too), this is a great option for the adventurist or on-the-go business person. Since it looks like a tumbler, no one will ever know – except you.

Coleman Camping Coffee Maker

Coleman Camping Coffee Maker

Specs:

  • Fuel Source: External Heat
  • Number Of Cups: 10
  • Weight: 6.61 Pounds

Here’s another great camping coffee maker from Coleman. Honestly, they’ve got so many good ones, it was hard not just to use them for this whole list.

Again, this is one of the larger coffee makers on our list, but when you can’t leave the kitchen behind, this is the one you bring. Again, this comes with a glass carafe that can hold up to ten cups of coffee. Again, our biggest complaint about this is that they should have included a metal carafe as this is meant for the outdoors (there is an option to buy one later). This can be kept warm as long as it is on a burner.

Coleman Camping Coffee Maker on a camping trip

While this is heavy, it’s not near as heavy as the QuikPot, probably because it doesn’t have the same internals since it doesn’t have its own fuel source; this is powered by a burner and not with propane directly. This is great for the campsites that already have a grill/burner on-site and you don’t want to lug out extra equipment. Once the pot is up to temperature, it will take around 20 minutes to fully brew a 10-cup pot of coffee.

Coleman Camping Coffee Maker and packaging

What We Like

Having a full-sized coffee maker on a camping/hiking trip is almost ludicrous. But, if you already have everything else at the campsite, this is the perfect addition. It can brew up to ten cups of “pure delight” consistently using most grill burners.

Overall

Just take the whole kitchen with you next time – that should be Coleman’s motto. This is a perfect example of having everything, even when camping. This 10-cup coffee maker uses the heat from most grill burners to heat the water and it automatically starts brewing once hot. Don’t settle for one cup when you can have ten cups. And, with the Pause-N-Serve feature, you can keep brewing even when you need some coffee “right now”.

Stanley Cook + Brew Camping Coffee Maker

Stanley Cook + Brew Camping Coffee Maker

Specs:

  • Fuel Source: External Heat
  • Number Of Cups: 8
  • Weight: 14.9 Ounces

If Coleman had a little brother, it would be Stanley. Stanley is another company that’s proven they can make some amazing camping/hiking products. And this Cook + Brew Camping Coffee Maker is proof.

Stanley Cook + Brew Camping Coffee Maker seperate parts

From the outside, this looks like an ordinary thermos. But, this is much more than just a simple thermos. While it can function as a thermos, you can also cook food such as hearty soups and brew coffee in it too. Since we are focusing on coffee, let’s focus on why this is one of the best on the market.

Stanley Cook + Brew Camping Coffee Maker on a hunting trip

For starters, this is not very big or heavy. It can easily be tucked away in a backpack or carrying case. It is built out of 18/8 stainless steel and double-walled for excellent temperature retention and rust resistance. Since this is not made from glass, it can withstand the general abuse that occurs while out camping/hiking. Plus, you can keep this over a flame/burner for as long as you want without any issues with deforming and/or burning.

Stanley Cook + Brew Camping Coffee Maker on a stove

But, the reason why this is better than so many other coffee makers is the fact that it functions as a French press. A French press does not use the traditional paper filters we’ve grown accustomed to. Paper filters tend to absorb the oils from the coffee grounds, diluting the overall flavor of the coffee. With this, you can rest assured that you’ll have the strongest and most flavorful cup of coffee around as it doesn’t require anything other than water and coffee grounds.

A couple using the Stanley Cook + Brew Camping Coffee Maker during a camping trip in the mountains

Stanley made sure to protect you from chemical leaks by using BPA-free plastics and stainless steel. This can easily be cleaned in the dishwasher and it is designed to last for life.

What We Like

Even in its simplicity, it can make one of the best cups of coffee outside of the cafe. For those who like it strong, this will definitely tickle your soul. For those who don’t, use less coffee grounds – approximately half of what you normally use.

Overall

This is much more than a camping coffee maker – it’s a lifesaver. Not only will you be able to cook up some of the best coffee you’ve ever had next to a campfire, but you can also cook and store some of the warmest, richest soups too. Stanley has proven for a long time that they know what the public wants and the Cook + Brew Coffee Maker is a perfect example of their dedication to customer satisfaction.

Wacaco Nanopresso Portable Espresso Maker

Wacaco Nanopresso Portable Espresso Maker

Specs:

  • Fuel Source: Boiling Water
  • Number Of Cups: 1
  • Weight: 11.8 Ounces

Camping can be one of the most enjoyable adventures you can do, but giving up your morning cup of coffee or espresso can be heartbreaking. Now you don’t have to give it up – just make sure you have your Wacaco Nanopresso Portable Espresso Maker and you’ll never have to give up your morning jolt again!

Wacaco Nanopresso Portable Espresso Maker in the outdoors

Starting out, this is a beautiful espresso/coffee maker. It looks like a pill/capsule with bright and bold colors that look a little out of place at a campsite (don’t worry, they have a black one too). However, it does come in three other colors including red, yellow, and orange. It is not very big, as it only measures in at 7.6 inches tall and 3.3 wide/deep. And it doesn’t weight much either at only 11.8 ounces (not even a pound).

Wacaco Nanopresso making espresso

Brewing up one of the strongest cups of coffee is super easy. All you have to do is put your coffee grounds in the storage area, pour your hot/boiling water into the water reservoir, pump up the capsule eight times, and let it do the rest. As an added feature, you use both hands to do the work/holding which can help warm you up on a COLD day/night.

Wacaco Nanopresso Portable Espresso Maker in the snow

Now, espresso is a little more fickle than coffee. And it requires the right temperatures and pressures to actually be enjoyable. The Nanopresso will maintain a perfect 18 bars of pressure (26psi) during the complete brewing cycle for the perfect cup. For those who want to go over the top, there are several accessories that can be added to really make this the perfect getaway coffee maker. Some of those accessories include an NS Capsule Adapter, a Barista Kit for making double-espressos, and even a mini-case for added protection.

What We Like

This takes strong coffee to a whole new level! It’s hard to imagine that a portable coffee maker could actually make a good cup of espresso, but the Nanopresso actually can. With the fully-regulated pressurized system, you get cup after cup of “pure bliss” consistently, for as long as you want.

Overall

Don’t be fooled by its size – this is one BAD CAPSULE! For espresso lovers, leaving behind the kitchen and/or cafe just isn’t an option. But with the Nanopresso, it could be an option. Don’t give up your favorite morning jolt just because you went on an adventure. Enjoy life and every morning with a flavorful, strong cup of espresso with the Nanopresso from Wacaco.

Farberware Classic Stainless Steel Stovetop Percolator (50124)

Specs:

  • Fuel Source: External Heat / Stovetop
  • Number Of Cups: 8
  • Weight: 2.25 Pounds

While Farberware isn’t as well known as Coleman and Stanley, they’ve proven themselves in the cooking/kitchen industry. And now they are taking that reputation into the woods.

This is another bold and beautiful option that looks a little out of place at the campsite, but it will quickly become a fan-favorite. It is wrapped in a super-shiny stainless steel outside/inside that is rust-resistant, insulated, and non-reactive (does not absorb smells/flavors; does not dilute contents with smells/flavors).

Farberware Classic inside

Brewing up eight glorious cups of coffee is super easy with the Farberware Stovetop Percolator. It comes with a built-in permanent filter that is easy to clean out, meaning you don’t need to bring any extra filters (or mess) with you. To brew an amazing pot of coffee, all you need to do is load up your coffee grounds, pour in some water, place it over the heat, and let it start percolating. You’ll know it’s ready when you see it bubbling in the glass-top on the lid.

Farberware Classic Stainless Steel in the dishwasher

This is another extremely portable option that won’t weigh you down too much. It will easily tuck away in a backpack or other hiking/camping bag without any issues. Cleaning it up is super easy as it can be placed in a dishwasher once you get back from your adventure. If you need more than eight cups, there is another option that gives you up to twelve cups of soul-tickling caffeine (through the link provided).

What We Like

For one of the most flavorful and aromatic coffee brews, you can’t be a percolator. This is one of the easiest percolators to work with, especially while away from the house. It’s small, light, compact, and perfect for the campsite.

Overall

If you want a clean, easy-to-use percolator that will make some amazing coffee brews, then don’t overlook this beauty from Farberware. It’s durable, dependable, and makes one of the most flavorful cups of coffee you’ve ever experienced while camping/hiking.

GSI Outdoors Collapsible Java Drip Camping Coffee Maker

GSI Outdoors Collapsible Java Drip Camping Coffee Maker

Specs:

  • Fuel Source: Hot Water
  • Number Of Cups: 12
  • Weight: 4.8 Ounces

Getting back to some of the single-serve options, this is another fan favorite. These are so small and easy to carry that it’s easy to forget them. For those who love drip coffees (who doesn’t?), this is a great addition to your camping gear. It’s easy to tuck away since it is fully collapsible. It comes with a protective lid that ensures nothing gets in during transport. When you are ready to use it, simply remove the lid, open it up, fill it up, and pour hot water over it – it will do the rest.

How to extend the GSI Outdoors Collapsible Coffee Maker

Depending on your coffee preference, you can use as much (or as little) coffee grounds as needed to brew the perfect cup of coffee. One thing to note, this expands to hold enough grounds for a full twelve-cup pot of coffee! Now, you can go well beyond a single cup of joy in the morning. Provide enough coffee for everyone at the campsite with a 4.8-ounce magic coffee maker from GSI Outdoors.

GSI Outdoors Camping Coffee Maker collapsed

What We Like

We would have laughed at you if you said that something this small could make twelve cups of drip coffee, but then we saw it for ourselves. This is one of the most compact, drip coffee makers on the market. While it may not hold the coffee after it has been brewed, it definitely takes the concern out of having everything else.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy0YDWxO-n0

Overall

Forget big, bulky coffee makers and pots – just carry around this fully collapsible drip filter and know that you have everything you need for a great cup (or pot) of coffee. GSI Outdoors has created a “tool” that we didn’t know we needed. So, the next time you go out, make sure you have all of your tools with you – waking up with a great cup of coffee just got a whole lot easier.

GSI Outdoors Ultralight Java Drip Camping Coffee Maker

GSI Outdoors Ultralight Java Drip Camping Coffee Maker

Specs:

  • Fuel Source: Hot Water
  • Number Of Cups: 1
  • Weight: 0.4 Ounces

Now, for one of the lightest and smallest options for brewing coffee on the market today, GSI Outdoors wins again! Their Ultralight Java Drip Camping Coffee Maker weighs less than half an ounce and makes coffee that’s just as good as the big boys.

Again, these super-compact, single-serve coffee makers are a camper’s dream. They make some of the best drip coffee while being super-light and portable. However, this one doesn’t sit directly on the cup, but rather over the cup. It has three attachable legs that allow it to float over the cup, giving it more freedom to work with larger cup sizes that its predecessor above. All you have to do is mount it, fill it with coffee grounds, and pour some hot/boiling water over it. Once the water has filtered through, you have a hot cup of drip coffee ready to wake your soul.

Camping with the GSI Outdoors Ultralight Coffee Maker

As with the other drip coffee offerings, you can use as much coffee as you want to get the brew just right. While the other GSI offering does give you up to twelve cups, this one will only give you one at a time. Even so, there isn’t anything remotely close to this for the price and size.

What We Like

This is the lightest drip coffee maker for camping we’ve ever seen. The only thing that would be lighter is a paper filter, but then it wouldn’t have the mounting legs to work. This has everything you need to get drip coffee without any fuss.

Overall

Don’t get weighed down trying to have your morning coffee. At only 0.4 ounces, you won’t even know it’s with you. But, after you’ve had your cup of coffee in the morning, you’ll be glad you didn’t forget it either. The Ultralight from GSI is an engineering marvel for coffee lovers on the go – don’t leave home without it.

Gourmia Manual Camping Coffee Maker (GKCP135)

Gourmia GKCP135 Manual Coffee Brewer

Specs:

  • Fuel Source: Hot Water
  • Number Of Cups: 1
  • Weight: 2 Pounds

Enjoying a cup of coffee when there isn’t any electricity presents a plethora of problems. With the Gourmia Manual Camping Coffee Maker, all those problems seem to just disappear.

Before we start, we want to point out that this could easily sit on your countertop and look absolutely stunning. It’s a modern designed, manual-press coffee maker that has a black base with a clear tube, with a plunger to create a clean, dependable cup of coffee. It is not very heavy at only 2 pounds and it is easily transportable.

Gourmia GKCP135 Manual Coffee Brewer in the kitchen

Brewing up a single serving of coffee is simple as all you need is some coffee grounds (or a K-Cup) to get started. Then, pour some hot/boiling water over the coffee grounds and start pressing. In around thirty to forty-five seconds, you’ll have a decent cup of coffee without all the mess (or electricity). For convenience, this model can actually hold up to three K-Cups at one time so you don’t have to stop at just one cup of coffee.

The water reservoir can hold up to 10 ounces of water at one time, making it easy to custom-tailor your cup of coffee to your taste (and energy requirements). This is TUF certified so it’s a safe option, at home or on the go. All of the plastic is BPA-free and you don’t have to worry about taste/flavor leak as it doesn’t dilute and/or absorb any smells and/or flavors. It is dishwasher safe, so cleanup is super easy.

What We Like

Sure, we would prefer to have a coffee maker that does everything for us, but this is one of the best manual coffee makers we’ve seen. All you have to do is apply a little pressure for less than a minute to have a cup of coffee. The ability to hold multiple K-Cups makes this a must-have on any camping trip.

Overall

Honestly, this would look good at the campsite or your kitchen countertop. While you’ll probably just use the trust Keurig for most of your K-Cup needs, you could replace it with this. If you wanted to be environmentally friendly, that’s what you would do. In either case, you can easily take the kitchen to the campsite with this Manual Camping Coffee Maker from Gourmia.

Buyer’s Guide To Find The Best Camping Coffee Maker

Knowing what to look for in a camping coffee maker can be confusing. There are plenty of features and functions that make them look great, but which ones are really worth your money? With this guide, you will know exactly which one is perfect for you.

Portability

This is the most critical factor to consider when looking for a camping coffee maker. With so many camping coffee makers on the market, it is important to understand that size truly matters.

Some camping coffee makers are so small they can fit in your back pocket. However, some could literally do double-time on your kitchen counter at home. Are both of them considered portable? Absolutely!

But, portability is determined based on a number of factors including distance to your campsite, needs, coffee consumption, fuel sources, and so on. If you only need one cup of coffee each day, a collapsible coffee maker could easily work for you. If you are going to need ten or more cups of coffee each day, a full-sized coffee maker would make the most sense.

Weight

Since you will be transporting this to your campsite, how much it weighs is another important factor. While ten pounds does not feel like much at the store, it can feel like you have an elephant in your backpack after four or five-mile hike.

Some camping coffee makers literally weigh less than half an ounce where some can weigh more than twelve pounds. Now, twelve pounds will not feel like much if you just have to go from the truck to the campsite which is less than 100 yards away, but it will feel like a ton if you have to hike a few miles.

Just because it looks nice does not mean that it is the right one for you. Make sure you consider how much your coffee maker weighs and how far you will need to travel with it. You may find out that you do not need such a big coffee maker…

Number Of Cups

Next, knowing how much coffee you will drink will directly affect how big and/or small your coffee maker will be. Again, some can be small enough to fit in your back pocket; these are considered single-serve options. Some can be large enough to sit on your counter at home; these are considered full-sized.

If you only need a single cup of coffee per day, there is really no reason to buy a ten-cup coffee maker. But, if you need more than a few cups of coffee per day, you might not be happy with a single-serve option. Pay attention to how many cups of coffee you need per day and base your decision on the factors above and how frequently you intend to drink coffee.

Ease Of Cleaning

Last but not least, pay attention to how easy it is to clean out your coffee maker. Small, portable units are generally very easy to clean. However, larger coffee makers tend to be a little more complicated. Since you are out in the wilderness, you will not have as many resources available to you as you would in your kitchen.

Therefore, make sure that you can clean your coffee maker properly either on-site or once you have made it back home. Some are dishwasher safe while some are not. Some can be cleaned on-site where some will require a little more scrubbing. Again, how much coffee you consume will dictate how often you need to clean your coffee makers.

Good Coffee Beans

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How are they powered?

A: Camping coffee makers are powered through different sources. Some of the most popular use propane as a direct fuel source. Others use grill burners as an external fuel source. And others use an external flame and/or hot water as a fuel source.

Generally speaking, propane is the most reliable option in use. You do not have to rely on anything externally to get that perfect cup of coffee. However, lugging around a propane tank might not be that easy for some. In that case, a pack of matches in some kindling can go a long way.

Q: Do they filter the water or do you need filtered water?

A: Most coffee makers use some type of paper filter or mesh filter to filter out the coffee grounds, not the water. If you want to clean water, then you would need to bring it yourself or boil it out.

Q: Do the coffee beans needs to be ground up first?

A: While there are some coffee makers that can grind up your beans for you, none of them made it on our list. Therefore, you will definitely need to grind up your coffee beans first. Most people will bring a canister of ground coffee rather than a bag of beans. If you really need fresh ground coffee, just grind it a few hours before you leave for your trip.

Q: What is the best brewing method for camping?

A: Honestly, this comes down to preference. For us, percolation is one of the best ways to get a full-flavored, aroma-filled cup of coffee. This tends to give you a strong and hearty cup of coffee. However, some people do not like there is a strong as we do and preferred different brewing method such as drip-filtering.

Q: Why do they cost so little/so much?

A: The reason for the wide pricing disparity is due to design, branding, and marketing. Some of the coffee makers just do not have a lot to them, making them rather inexpensive. Some have a ton of design parts including a propane line and heater, an insulated carafe, stand/base, and more which can lead to a higher price.

Make sure that you find one that will serve your needs without breaking the budget. Remember, this is for a campsite…

Q: How portable are camping coffee makers?

A: Some camping coffee makers are extremely portable, literally collapsing down to almost nothing. Some can fit in your water bottle holder of your hiking/camping backpack while some can be as large as a standard kitchen coffee maker. Portability comes down to how far you are traveling and what your needs are.

Conclusion

So there you have it! These are the ten best camping coffee makers right now. As you can see, they fit a wide variety of brewing styles and portability options. For some, a collapsible, drip-feed coffee maker is all they need. For others, a full ten-pot carafe is needed to provide enough for the whole camp.

Remember, we used the buyer’s guide provided above to help us narrow down our search.
