BrailleTouch lets the blind text

Modern smartphones come with touchscreen displays – which is not a bad thing at all, really. Just take a look at the kind of apps and games that have been written for the platform to date and tell me that it isn’t revolutionary in any way. However, while the hard of hearing can always enjoy the use of a smartphone or featurephone because they can see, how about the visually impaired? Georgia Tech believes otherwise, and has come up with BrailleTouch – a Braille-like texting app.
This prototype app for touchscreen mobile devices intends to be the complete solution to all our modern day texting problems, without having to even look at the device’s display at all – which would also bode well for the visually impaired, of course. Mario Romero, Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Interactive Computing (IC) and the project’s principal investigator says, “Research has shown that chorded, or gesture-based, texting is a viable solution for eyes-free written communication in the future, making obsolete the need for users to look at their devices while inputting text on them.”

Acer upgrades Iconia Tab range to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Google has certainly made a whole lot of people hungry with their creative naming convention to depict the different operating system upgrades that they have rolled out so far. In order not to bore you with a long story, Android 2.1 was known as Eclair, while Android 2.2 Froyo proved to be rather delicious. Android 3.0 Honeycomb was a special tablet-only operating system update, while Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich intends to cut down on the fragmentation that has long plagued Android users, which means Android 3.0 and Android 2.2 users can now make the jump to Ice Cream Sandwich.
However, not all hardware manufacturers have prepared their device(s) to support Android 4.0, and good thing Acer is not one of those companies. In fact, Acer intends for owners of their popular Iconia Tab line to make the jump to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. In fact, an Over The Air (OTA) update for the Acer Iconia Tab A200 has already been pushed for some time now, and the entire exercise will be complete over the course of the following week.

Smartphone Toothbrush? Really?

There are just certain things that I feel need to remain “old school” my bathroom habits are but a few of them, I mean, I really don’t care what new fangled way they come up with… to do, well, whatever it is we do in there. I’m not having it. I don’t want to try it. I don’t want to hear about it, and writing about this next gadget is as close as I’m gonna get. Of course you all know that this is just the beginning, the Smartphone is officially encroaching on our bathrooms, be forewarned.
What we have here is the worlds first high tech toothbrush, called The Beam. It is a non-motorized toothbrush that will connect to your android device via Bluetooth. Bluetooth? even that seems a bit off, ya think? Anyhow, this device functions as a timer, making sure you brush your pearly whites for the optimal period of time, it starts timing when you start brushing and provides data when you’re done.

Apple Free – iDevice Protection

I admitted in a recent post that I had yet to purchase an iPhone. While I got the occasional accolade, for the most part people snickered and belittled me for not yet entering the 21st century. Bear in mind I already had an iPad and an iPod and various other electronic  items that should have qualified me among the tech savvy, but most folks were faintly ashamed of me.
This weekend I got the darn iPhone. Of course I purchased the optional insurance from Apple, as I saw it, there was no choice. It was very expensive, but I have a daughter that we call “the Crusher”, so a discussion was not necessary. Well, I wish I had known about iSmart Protection, available nationwide, it offers the first ever family, group, small business and large organization plans at discounted prices. Best of all, it actually offers protection to people with UNLOCKED or Jailbroken iPhones who were previously unprotected. (woo-hoo)

Tagg Pet Tracker – Your Pet can Text You while he’s Away

When I was a kid we had a dog that ran away all the time, I remember combing the streets and screaming his name over and over, making posters and driving the streets with my dad. Thing is, he was so cute and lovable, we would always find him hanging out with some neighbors, getting fed table scraps and lounging in the grass, but I still worried, I loved him so much.
Well, little Digger’s social life would have been cut short with the Tagg Pet Tracker, designed for dogs and cats over 10 lbs. this small, lightweight device attaches to your pet’s favorite collar with a 2 piece clip. Of course it is designed to withstand all the running, digging, jumping and swimming your pet may encounter during his getaway. Rokform’s Rokbed Fuzion iPhone 4/4S case is proudly made in the USA

“Made in USA” used to be a symbol of quality, but over the years, with the manufacturing of goods being outsourced to countries that have far cheaper labor and poorer working conditions in some cases, we see less and less “Made in USA” labels on products that we purchase off the shelf. In fact, Made in China has long been the mantra for many manufacturers, be it clothes, toys, and consumer electronics equipment. There has been some debate as to whether Apple should make less in the name of profit and bring back manufacturing of their iPhones to the US, but at least Rokform is proud to be all American.
This manufacturer of premium protective cases, stands and accessories for the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch devices has their latest product up for sale – the Rokbed Fuzion Aluminum/Polycarbonate iPhone 4/4S case that is said to be the result of top-quality domestic production. Let us read up more about it in the extended post, and who knows? You might out of the door after that in a jiffy to pick up one of the Rokbed Fuzions.

Roadkill Toys – They take Guts to Play with… Literally

I spent my Sunday at the Toy Fair here in NYC, and while I have quite a few things to share with you, (and I will) for some reason these toys are the ones I can’t seem to forget about! They were adorable, cartoon-y, then shocking, hysterically funny and I couldn’t help but smile all day, they were thought out down to the last detail, super professional and as it ends up, I just have to have one! I mean, I’ll get one for my daughter, yes.. that’s it, that’s my story.
Meet Roadkill toys, they embody every single characteristic of a warm and fuzzy, collectable, super cuddly plush animal, of course one that has been run over… perhaps more than once… and their crucial internal organs are hanging out, but rest assured that their entrails can be tucked back inside and zippered up for the more squeamish among us. Complete with body bags, toe tags and a suitable for framing certificate of death, these suckers are what kids dreams are made of… um nightmares? Well, anyway, lets just say they should have some sort of sleep issues with these adorable little dead things.

The Video Game Coffee Table – Indulge your Inner Child

I’m thinking it would be great to have a gameroom, but then again, being a grown-up and all, maybe having a bunch of toys in a room is a little too juvenile. I mean the place can’t look like my college sorority, I have a reputation to uphold, sort of… but I gotta tell you, I love video games, all of them, and I have a special fondness for old school arcade games, whats a girl to do?
Well, heres a start, a company called Surface Tension (we’ve reported on them before) makes some pretty awesome, and relatively discreet, coffee-type tables that that have tucked away inside them, the heart of an upright arcade cabinet. With a lovely smoked glass top, these tables conceal a virtual arcade wonderland in a very pretty, contemporary style wooden table. Available in various designs and finishes including veneers or solid woods, each unit is complete with retro gaming components, from the 2 sets of controls, 1 and 2 player start buttons, a trackball, joysticks and volume controls, heck, the only things thats missing is the coin slots!

Tactical iPad Cover

Ever heard of Flying Circle Bags? No? Neither have I, but the rather fun-named company is a key supplier of field, tactical and travel bags to the US military. This is serious business, and when they roll out the Tactical iPad Cover, you know that they are not kidding about maximizing the use of your iPad. After all, this multi-functional iPad accessory is touted to be a force multiplier for not only the iPad 2, but its predecessor as well.
Boasting a sturdy construction build as well as 1000D NIR-compliant DuPont Cordura material, this case is more than able to stand up to the rigors of tough living, and yet it does not look out of place in an office boardroom during a meeting.
