Deer Whistle keeps deer from denting your bumper

by Ally

There were several years that I would swear that my car was emitting some sort of deer mating call that brought every deer in the county to stand directly in front of my car.  I’ve had to swerve through a full herd of deer more than once.  If I had one of these Deer Whistles attached to my car I might have stood a chance against the numerous deer that have crossed my path, particularly since this is supposed to ward them off.

As long as you’re going faster than 35 MPH it’ll create a sound that cause deer, elk, moose and antelope to freeze in their tracks.  We’ll just hope that they aren’t already standing in the road when they hear it.  The small whistle just attaches to your grill or under your bumper.  I have no idea how well it’ll work, but it’s cheap enough to give it a try.  Plus, if you live in a rural area it’s doubtful that it’ll make matters any worse.  You can pick one up for $7.98 through Things You Never Knew Existed.

This is like the dog whistle, you really can’t tell if it works. Not worth wasting my money. If you hit a deer, your simply going to fast because what if it was an elderly person, you just going to keep driving till you hit it- use your fucken brakes you dumbass!

… or you could just buy a turbo Diesel, I have an ’01 beetle and in addition to 50-60 mpg, a side effect of the turbo is that the only part of a deer I ever see is the tail as they turn and run.

and to ‘hikuworld’ you obviously don’t live in an area with deer, they are fast and not bright. They don’t realize that that big long black rock (read road) is slippery. then after they appear out of nowhere, slipping and sliding on the road, they just stare at you.

Deer whistles were tested multiple times years ago and were proven to NOT work. The sound from the whistle doesn’t arrive far enough ahead of the car to do any good.

My dad has had deer whistles on all his vehicles since the ’70s. Nothing more reassuring than to see the glowing eyes on the side of the road as the deer stand there instead of running in front of the car.

We have had more deer jump in front of our van since we installed “Deer Whistles” than we ever did before. I am not suggesting that the whistles attracted deer, only that it obviously does not work.

As someone else already pointed out, there is no way a deer would hear the whistle before the vehicle arrived since the whistle is made by the passing of air over the device which is located on the vehicle.
