Gigabyte M528 is really tiny

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Just in case you thought that the Asus Eee PC was one impressive tiny wonder, along comes Gigabyte and their diminutive M528 netbook. Measuring just 152mm x 80mm x 23mm, this small device manages to pack in full PC functionality in such a small form factor. It will be powered by the impressive Intel Atom 800MHz processor and aided by 512MB RAM, and despite the fact that it runs on Linux, it is also able to drop that and get Windows XP up and running without any problems. Power consumption works out to approximately 2.8W on average, which is always a good thing.

Motorola rolls out trio of PDA phones

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Motorola might be struggling in the current unstable economic climate, but that doesn’t mean the telecommunications giant is about to throw in the towel. The US-based company has just rolled out a trio of new PDA phones in China today - the MING A1600, MING A1800 and MOTO A810. The first two MING cell phones are next-generation handsets that boast standalone GPS navigation and packs in more than a decent punch where productivity and multimedia functions are concerned. As for the MOTO A810, this entry-level phone will further expand the PDA phone market in China with the bare necessities without breaking the bank.

RazorBook 400 announced

Monday, June 30th, 2008

The Asus Eee PC has certainly set an unpredecented, er, precedent, moving thousands of units and proving to the world that there is a market for a tiny notebook which does the most basic of tasks minus the bloated bells and whistles of much more expensive devices. 3K Computers has taken up this challenge, and they recently announced their second generation of RazorBook 400 mini-notebook computer in the form of the 3K RazorBook 400 Mini Notebook Ultra Mobile PC which is powered by Windows CE. It tips the scales at just under a kilogram (now that’s worth lugging around in press conferences and events such as CES), boasting a highly affordable price tag of $299. At that price, what can you expect? Head on after the jump for more details.

SanDisk intros new SSDs

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

SanDisk, a name synonymous with quality when it comes to flash memory, has outdone itself yet again with a new line of flash memory-based solid-state drives (SSDs) which were specially designed to cater for an emerging new category of portable consumer electronics known as Ultra Low-Cost PCs (ULCPC) or “netbooks” . Among the products that fall in such categories are the phenomenally successful Asus Eee PC and MSI’s Wind. The whole point to this new form of SSD is to provide an enhanced experience when surfing the Internet over a Wi-Fi connection. Dubbed the SanDisk pSSD (Parallel ATA solid state drive), this new technology does away with the need for a hard drive as it is able to provide more than enough space for both operating system and applications without missing a beat.

Yamaha Disklavier Mark IV is one Grand Piano

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Every once in a while, some company will improve on something that you wouldn’t think needed any improvement at all. Take the grand piano, for instance. Its sleek blank ebony framework and perfect ivory keys are a symbol of pure music.

And yet, Yamaha has made the grand piano even more perfect with the recently unveiled Disklavier Mark IV, a piano that can “play itself, teach you to play, and perform in sync with your favorite CDs”.

It is also one of the first pianos to have a Wifi connection with 802.11b specification. As far as I know, the Disklavier is also the only piano with a remote control. This PDA-type pocket remote controller has buttons and a full-color LCD touchscreen, and some models include a tablet-PC remove with 10.4 inch touchscreen.

ASUS P5Q

Even though I enjoy building custom computers for friends and relatives, rarely do I ever see a motherboard that I find to be newsworthy. Sure, you’ll have ones with some awesome specs, but those don’t usually catch my eye too easily these days. However, this new P5Q board from ASUS has a little something extra that’s worth a look.

OLPC project to get Windows XP

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

windows-olpc.jpgThe noble One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project recently revealed that the Windows XP operating system from Microsoft will, in the future, be available on XO laptops in addition to the current open source Linux operating system which they are currently using. The Windows-based XO systems will be released in the upcoming pilot programs from June onwards, and it is nice to see that the OLPC group and Microsoft finally come to an agreement where everyone can win. After all, the decision as to whether to include Windows XP or not did take a rather tumultous route to date, where both software and hardware on the XO were specially designed to offer special features that were only supported by the Linux-based software stack previously, but it is nice to see Microsoft take the effort to customize their own Windows to enable to run on the XO without sacrificing on the laptop’s capabilities such as dual-mode screen, camera, writing pad and WiFi connectivity in the process.

Eee Desktop

We all know that the tiny Eee PC from Asus has been a runaway hit here in the US, however, what we don’t know is whether or not Asus can pull off the same feat with a similar desktop. They are willing to give it a shot, and here is what the new Eee Box should look like.
