36″ Twitching Lighted Spider

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

With Halloween coming up upon us in a couple months’ time, it is never too early to prepare. Enter the 36″ Twitching Lighted Spider to help add that Halloween charm to your home as kids drop by, asking for treats and tricks.

This spiders eight illuminated legs span 36″ in diameter, four of which move slowly to create the simulacrum of careful, calculated movement as if stalking prey. The spiders thorax and abdomen conceal a stealthily quiet electric motor that drives a system of levers attached to the two front and two rear legs, creating a semblance of life as the legs twitch back and forth while the abdomen slowly rises and falls. Each leg is decorated with a string of incandescent purple lights rated for 1,000 hours of use; the spiders pedipalps have green lights. Made of a powder-coated steel frame, the body and legs are coated with 1/8″ long jet black flocking.

This AC-powered spider will retail for $69.95, and while it might not snack on pesky insects, it doesn’t leave around trail of cobwebs either.

Jet Pack

We had some great entries in last weeks coolest gadgets contest but one entry stood out with the voters, taking 34% of the votes, the Working Jet Pack.

I can imagine that machine-assisted flight is probably one of the greatest thrills technology has to offer. It does cost about $250,000, though.

I hope we will soon come to an era when everybody is flying around on jet packs that are not so expensive. Maybe the skies will be filled with jet packers, and I wonder how long it will take for us to cease to be impressed by it.

World’s Practical (and Safest) Jet Pack Invented

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Okay, time for something that everybody wants to read about, the jet pack! Back when I was a kid, I longed for the day when everyone would have one of these. Considering that this is the new millennium, I am really disappointed that someone has not mass-marketed these by now.

I believe that we are well on our way to jet pack proliferation with designer Glenn Martin’s model. It isn’t really a jet pack, per se, because there are no jets involved. Martin uses two gasoline-fueled 200 horsepower fans, which make the jet pack louder than a jet plane.

I suppose the lack of flaming afterburners is why Martin says that his jetpack is the safest. Another reason is that it comes with a built-in parachute, which will hopefully be a standard safety feature for every jetpack.

RC Jump Jet takes off

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

rc-jumpjet.jpgThe RC Jump Jet is something different from the standard remote controlled planes and helicopters as it merges the best of both worlds.

It takes off like a helicopter and flies like a plane, using four gyroscopically controlled rotors and a not an inconsiderable amount of flying skill. The swept back wafer thin wings and tail help to control the stability of forward flight, and the multi-directional control allows you to fly in any direction you can think of, and often a few you hadn’t expected. Saying that this is cool is like saying Ricky Gervais is mildly amusing, or that Tiger Woods is quite handy at crazy golf. It’s really quite hard to describe (which is why we’re failing so miserably) just how awesome this indoor flier is. The way it moves through the air makes the Harrier look clumsy - even if it does have more weapons. To keep it light and balanced, the bodywork has been stripped to a minimum, and a twenty minute charge should give you a good ten minutes of the best indoor flying experience you’ve ever had.

The RC Jump Jet is supposedly easy to fly, and you’ll need to fork out £69.95 to find out. Well, it definitely is compared to the real deal, but being unconventional by itself will probably involve a rather steep learning curve, but I’m sure it’ll be fun once you get the hang of it.

Inkjet Tattoos

When I was a young kid, I loved getting those temporary tattoos and making myself look like a cool grownup. Of course no self-respecting adult would get inked-up with the kind of artwork one would find in those quarter machines by the checkout lanes. So if your kids want tattoos, why not make them some that actually look cool?

Jet Calculator

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

lexon-calc.jpg

The Jet Calculator cannot take to the skies, but what it does is look really sleek on your desk. This is more the domain of cell phones, but all the Jet Calculator does is look extremely sweet in its aluminum-alloy body and gold/silver colored design. It will be made available in Korea sometime early next month, with the silver and gold models retailing for $43 and $53, respectively. I think most people will think this is some sort of newfangled cell phone at first glance.
