Get geeky and help the environment at the same time.

    Dell Computers

– With surveys suggesting the number one thing people want for Christmas once again being a computer, it makes good eco sense to think green. Dell Computer is, recently announcing an initiative to make Dell Computers more eco friendly. As the second largest computer maker in the industry, Dell is taking their leadership position very seriously and should be rewarded by those looking to buy a PC for the holidays. In addition to creating more energy efficient computers, Dell plans to also lean on their their suppliers to follow their lead. And if they don’t, Dell may levy penalties to motivate them. Although their pledge mostly relates to becoming carbon neutral in their manufacturing processes, it’s a start, and makes Dell the first major computer manufacturer to seek to become carbon neutral by next year.

Coolest mobile news: OHA, gPhone, Android, Nokia Haptikos

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007
header

Again, the last few days were pretty tumultuous in the mobile world. Google themselves have first thrown the ‘where’s my gPhone’ question, only to reveal the Open Handset Alliance and the Android embedded operating system. Then, there have been reports of companies adopting the OS, of others refusing it. Also, the iPhone’s getting locked up yet again, and rumor has it that they (Apple, that is) are preparing to release a tablet. Last but not least at all, Nokia shows off a new tactile touchscreen technology which claims to realistically emulate the press of a button.

Monday, October 22nd, 2007
phones phones phones

Last week has been full of rumors and news about the mobile world.

The first big announcement was the introduction of a touch interface for Series60. Then, first as a rumor and then as a reality, the Darwin SDK for the iPhone has been revealed. Not too long thereafter, Steve Jobs made us understand that all future iPhone applications will require certificates, and will be fully controlled via iTunes. Add the new patent filing for Microsoft’s new touch WM interface, and you get news from all important mobile device camps.

Read on for debates, suppositions and suggestions.

Is Microsoft finally patenting the Zune Phone?

Monday, October 15th, 2007

Zune phone interface

Make reports on an article about patent filing from Redmond which may indicate the Microsoft is busy preparing the long rumored Zune Phone. The photographs of screen mockups that come with the patent application seems to suggest that their “Extensible Filtered Lists for Mobile Device User Interface,” will include a touch interface picture viewer, phone calls and message screen, games, MP3 player (of course), calendar, and all the usual suspects. It doesn’t look as pretty as the Cupertino’s iPhone, of course, but it’s a Windows interface, so it’s going to be list-if-ied and organized in group fashion.

Advanced UMPC communicator, by Elektrobit

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

littleMIMDHere’s a new and advanced UMPC built by the Finnish company Elektrobit (or just EB). It’s called the MIMD or Mobile Internet Media Device, and features a slew of connectivity, media and navigation features.

The form factor might seem familiar, as it’s almost a replica of the Sony Vaio UMPC’s. However, the build is a bit different, there’s other hardware inside and the software is completely another thing.

Latest GPS news from Holux, Asus and IO DATA

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Holux GPSmile 55

Holux GPSmile 55

The latest Holux GPS system doesn’t have anything new in terms of features when comparing to other devices, the design is probably the most unique point, being that all the other specifications are normal to high-end GPS systems.

Anyhow, the GPSmile 55 comes with the familiar 4.3” touch screen, which is a must-have for any GPS system. Other details on the connectivity options include bluetooth so you can get the “hands-free” calling system, and on the memory choices you can use a SD card to expand the storage capacity.

Windows CE 5.0 is the operative system being used on the Holux GPSmile 55, which goes along with the Samsung CPU running at 400Mhz (code-name S3C2440A). The battery life seems too good to be true, 10 hours using a 2600mHa battery. Last but not least, TMC traffic information is also available. Rumors mention a release date on early 2008.

Apple Announces iPhone, Apple TV

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007
Coolest Gadgets

Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything. Apple, a company known for innovation, has been very fortunate in this regard. In 1984 they introduced the world to the first Macintosh and changed personal computing forever. Then in 2001 Apple introduced the first iPod and redefined the music industry.

Today Apple introduced 3 revolutionary products: widescreen iPod, mobile phone, and internet communicator. But there’s a catch… these revolutionary products aren’t 3 separate devices. They are all rolled into one product called the iPhone ($499 4GB, $599 8GB).

The iPhone (GSM+EDGE) has a touchscreen interface with multitouch capabilities. That means you can use multiple fingers at the same time. How can such a small device have an advanced multitouch interface? The iPhone runs the Macintosh operating system OS X. How did Apple fit an entire operating system into a tiny phone? I don’t know. Magic?

The iPhone syncs to your computer just like your iPod. All your media (music, videos, podcasts, etc.) as well as contacts, email amd calendars will sync to your iPhone. You can even add any any IMAP or POP email account. Yahoo users will like this next perk. Yahoo is giving all iPhone owners free IMAP email. You normally have to pay extra for this feature.

Web browsing on a mobile phone was probably one of the worst user experiences you’ve ever encountered. Well those days are over. The iPhone uses the Safari browser and can smoothly navigate complicated sites like Google Maps.

And if all this iPhone business wasn’t enough, Steve Jobs also announed Apple TV ($299) - a way to enjoy your media on your big screen TV. Anything you put into iTunes (content from iTunes, DVDs you’ve ripped, videos from YouTube, etc.) can be wirelessly transmitted to your Apple TV box.

The Apple TV has 802.11 WiFi (b, g + n) and will automatically sync from your PC.

More Apple TV specs:

  • 40GB HD
  • 720p HD video
  • componet
  • RCA
  • USB 2.0
  • ethernet
  • WiFi
  • HDMI
