Jetboil Personal Cooking System

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Where are you going to get a hot cuppa joe if you’re out in the wilderness, roughing it out? Well, instead of going through the frustrations and motions of starting a fire in the middle of nowhere, the Jetboil Personal Cooking System is here to save the day.

The Jetboil Personal Cooking System (PCS) has sparked a revolution in outdoor cooking. Capable of boiling two cups in two minutes at 75-80% efficiency, the PCS is twice as fast and uses half as much fuel as conventional stoves. The PCS boils up to 50 cups (12 liters) of water from only one isobutane/propane micro-canister. Such outstanding performance results from the FluxRing heat exchanger, which captures and focuses the burner’s heat instead of the heat being lost to the ambient air. Well suited to quickly heating water, the Jetboil can be used to make hot beverages, noodles, pasta, dehydrated hiking meals, soups and, of course, a nice cup of coffee (using the optional Coffee Press accessory).

Well, this is neat especially for those who love adventuring in the great outdoors, and starting a fire can be quite a hassle. It also makes for the perfect device if you want instant hot water (although there is the initial 2 minute wait), allowing to brew your own coffee almost instantaneously.

Project Inkwell and IDEO create the Spark

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

There has been a lot of press surrounding the “One Laptop per Child” campaign, but there is a similar concept presented by IDEO and Project Inkwell called the Spark.

Project Inkwell has a goal to “increase the size and effectiveness of the K-12 education technology market by managing the synthesis of functional specifications for a ubiquitous computing platform”. In other words, they want to put easy-to-use mobile devices into the hands of the students, so they can learn anytime and anywhere.

The Spark uses wireless networking for Internet-based learning. This allows the student to learn in any environment, and the company believes that students at the K-12 level will learn better on these laptop computers.

Sony’s Bubble earbuds show off a softer side to gadgets

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

I have always had a preference for how the Skull Candy earbuds look, since they are one of the few that features a bit of color and are sold at a great deal of stores.  Well these new Sony earbuds seem to feature even more color and add a bit of sparkle to the mix as well.  Which means that these shiny little guys are likely going to be more fitting for the feminine type.  These colorful earbuds might actually be enough to get me to switch brands.  Well they would have been, if there was a US release date to speak of.  No, this pretty new product is headed straight for Japan and no word if it will venture elsewhere.

Recycled Auto Part Chess Set

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

Think about how many junky cars you see people driving. Where do you think those cars will be in five years? Rotting away in some landfill no doubt. Old car parts can be used for so many productive purposes, rather than gathering dust on some abandoned lot.

Armando Ramirez proves that old cars are so much more than mobile junk piles. He creates these awesome recycled chess sets made from old automobile parts. Each chess set is custom made, each piece composed of the heavy and rustic remnants of an old car.

Cutlery for the handy man

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Even the manliest of men need to admit that they need food to survive. Preferably a nice juicy steak with a hot baked potato, but of course a slice of strawberry cheesecake would do. The point is that you can stock up on every tool in the catalog, but a nice pair of eating utensils is always an investment worth making.

Of course, with this outburst of industrial design influence, everything is being mixed and mashed into one beautiful product of productivity. These eating utensils are made for not only eating, but for crouching down for some butt-crack revealing plumbing, or even fixing a loose spark plug on your vehicle.

The very retro M21 Flat Panel TV

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

If your flat panel TV is looking entirely too modern in your home, this prototype design might spark your interest. The M21 Flat Panel definitely looks more like one of the earlier TVs than the sleek ones offered today. Although I love how the flat panels look, someone that has a home that is overly retro might not want to slap something so modern into their living room. Something like this would blend in a lot better. Besides that, if you’re robbed by really ignorant criminals, maybe they’ll be fooled and leave it alone thinking it’s just an old outdated TV.

The design was made by Joe Wilkerson, but anyone that is great with their hands could probably easily make something similar. It’d probably be faster than waiting on the prototype to hit the market. Especially since prototypes don’t always get made. This particular design features a 42” plasma screen and is designed after TVs from the 1950s. The designer is still testing the waters and seeing what kind of public interest his design draws before he takes any further steps with it. At some point he hopes to make a wider and shorter version that features a bit of storage. Which means for all those interested in the design keep a lookout on his page for any new pictures he may post.

V12 Engine made from paper

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Now this is one piece of origami that you will definitely find fascinating, and in the words of the designer, it took “approximately two years to design this spectacular magical art”, and the person has made this knowledge public so you can save two years (or more of your life) trying to figure it out.

This “V12 four-stroke Engine” has semi-realistic exterior and interior detail. Each of 12 spark plugs (LEDs) is ignited accordingly to the moving cycle. Many moveable parts include a compound crankshaft, a rapid cooling fan, 12 rods and 12 pistons etc. It is made with paper entirely (except some little wood sticks, some tapes, 12 LEDs, some electrical wires, 12 switches, a resistor, a motor and a battery holder). The instruction included in this kit is a CD-ROM (a PDF file) contains easy-to follow diagrams and step-by-step instructions with more than a thousand detailed nice and clear pictures. All patterns are printed on high quality acid-free heavy paper, which can last for many years and will not turn brittle and yellow or fades with age. No paint applied. It looks pure and elegant. Various shadows created by different light sources make it look stunning. The origami-reinforced structure is applied in the engine (they will not be seen). The origami-reinforced structures make the model very rigid and keep the pieces in the accurate positions.

Of course, you’ll need some white glue, a sharp knife and plenty of patience to complete this project. Very. Cool.
