I am G.I. Joe!!! No wait, I’m mildly overweight Ken! DIY Action Figures!

December 13th, 2006 by Fred in Miscellaneous Gadgets

You have always played: G.I. Joe (Action Man), He-Man, and the occasional Barbie (sister enforced most likely).action hero

Well now you can make your own action figure at On Demand Action Figure. They also are the same people that bring you the joys of Herobuilders.com which oddly is mostly hip-hop styled figures. Also it seems they’re affiliated with toybuilders.com where you can custom develop your own toys, board games and plush toys as well!

Who doesn’t want to make a great toy on their own? You’ve probably seen Conan O’Brien has one (is it on his desk?) and really everyone probably should, if the image is correct, you can even put them in your seat at the office, and people may wonder if you shrunk! Then again, maybe not.

This is my first lame version,, I’ll likely go back and make another, as I am loathe to put ties around my neck as they make me stabby. Plus the only sportcoat I own is black (the other “suit” they had was pinstripes for that “scarface” look).

Thanks BoingBoing

Solar Panels using Blueberries?

December 13th, 2006 by Dan in Solar Powered Gear

solar.jpgScientists from the University of Tor Vergata, located in Rome, announced that they developed a new type of solar panel made with the pigment of blueberries. The panel, as opposed to traditional ones, eliminated completely the use of silicon. The result is a much cheaper product and more efficient to a certain extent because the panels are more flexible and in the near future they could even become transparent sheets.

The technology is based on the idea that organic semiconductors could reduce drastically the cost of production of the solar panels, which is one of the main drawbacks of this alternative energy source. It is estimated that the standard solar panels manufactured with silicon have an efficiency rate of 15%, meaning that the electric energy produced is 15% of the solar energy captured. Wii sensor goes wireless

December 13th, 2006 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets

wireless-wii-sensor.jpg

So you’ve bought a spanking new Nintendo Wii as part of your get fit regiment in view of the upcoming holiday season where you will indulge in plenty of eating, drinking, and video gaming. Unfortunately, as with everything in this world, there is nothing perfect, and the very same thing applies to the Wii sensor that falters under extra bright conditions. The Wireless Wii Sensor does not provide a foolproof method against dropped or wayward connections with your Wiimote in the presence of bright light, but it does do away with the pesky cable that definitely turns down the Wii’s sex appeal by a notch.

December 13th, 2006 by Edwin in Toys

adult-link.jpgFans of Link, the Hero of Time and the true bearer of the Triforce and Master Sword, will be pleased to know that the master adventurer is now cast in poly-stone forever by the good folk at First 4 Figures. The Adult Link measures 7″ tall including the base he stands on, and looks set to loose one of his trademark spin attack that we have all come to know and love over the past couple of decades.

My wife wants a Lotus,, ummm you’re right dear,, let’s never argue!!!

December 13th, 2006 by Fred in Miscellaneous Gadgets, Vehicle Gadgets

Seriously, we came out of the garage below her lab and there it was, a gleaming metallic charcoal Lotus Elise.

She said, “What’s THAT?!”

“That’s the Lotus I always tell you I want!”

“How much is it?!”

“It’s like 43,000$.” (I’m a Californian, I’m allowed to say like even if it irks you)

“Seriously?!”

“yeah…”

“Can we get one?!”

“I Love you.”

Yes, that’s how the conversation went.

So then I went on to explain some simple facts.
1. Edmunds lists a 2006 Elise at $42,990 USD.
2. 190 Horsepower
3. 0-60 MPH in under 5 seconds
4. Lotus!! Suspension, well,, like a Lotus!
5. Look at it!!!
6. The nearest competitors and their costs:

BMW M-series $49,000+ why spend more, get less?
Porsche Boxster $45,000 required if you’re a dentist, but what if you’re not!?
Honda S2000 $ 34,050 it’s boring in a wedge shape (but yes, it’s a good deal,, but Boooring!!!)

Corvette $44170+ You can spend the lowest sum for it, but at that price point, I think the tires are optional!

1984 Apple LISA Demo

December 12th, 2006 by methodshop in Retro Gadgets

Want a good laugh? This video clip from a local cable show has a rare demonstration of Apple’s 1984 Lisa computer as well as some sexy 1980s hair styles. In the video, some guy named Alfred takes the $10,000 Lisa computer for a test drive. Yep the Lisa sold for $10,000. Pretty expensive for a clunky word processor. In case you are wondering, the Lisa would cost about $19,500 in 2006 dollars. Another funny thing about the video is the TV host. For some reason she talks like a robot. She’s also wearing a pair of over-sized 1980s eye glasses that probably have more glass than an automobile windshield.

Warning: There is a very long 5 minute introduction before the Lisa demo clip. Alfred, the guy giving the demonstration in the video, is now a YouTube director and loves to suck up to his subscribers. He also apologizes for his 1984 haircut, suit and a recent nose surgery. But once the actual demonstration clip starts to play, you will probably enjoy it.

A Beginners RC Plane

December 12th, 2006 by Mike in Toys

RC Beginner's Plane
I once had a remote control plane, which was, to me, the coolest thing in the entire world. That is, until my second time flying it when my supreme flying skills got it stuck in a tree. That pretty much ended the fun. Of course, my plane was a cheap $40 piece of cardboard that required a good throw before it actually got into the air. If you’re willing to pay a little more, about $100, you can get a real plane, one that you can land and take off on its own.

Super Computer To Fight AIDS

December 12th, 2006 by Tiago in Tech News

The Super Computer

This kind of super computer was revealed in South Africa with the intention to help scientists overcome serious diseases like AIDS and malaria, these are 2 big problems that kill a lot of people in that African country in case you didn’t know.

It is obvious that the computer can’t find a cure to AIDS, but it can help by speeding up the cycle of research, so instead of a problem and having to wait days/weeks/months to know the outcome of a possible solution, the researchers can simply input the data into the computer and create a simulation.
