Browsing the Web in 3D

February 9th, 2006 by Al in Software

3D Web BrowserThis looks kind of cool, being able to browse the web in 3D with the uBrowser. You can even make sites animate like a flag in the wind.

Other than being cool to look at, the technology could also be used in games or virtual worlds. Imagine walking past a web browser in Quake and being able to use it in the 3D environment. It will be interesting to see if appears in any commercial products in the future but for now you can download the browser (free) to play with.

Atari Pong Wall

February 9th, 2006 by methodshop in Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets
Coolest Gadgets

I was on TechEBlog the other day and found this great YouTube clip from Nextfest 2006. It’s an interactive installation of an Atari touch-sensitive “Pong Wall” game. No video displays or game controllers needed. You just touch the wall and use your hand to position your paddle. The Pong Wall detects hand movement by using embedded sensors on the wall. And the game interface/score is projected on the wall with LEDs.

It’s fun to watch this technology in action but unfortunately the two guys playing in this clip aren’t very serious competitors. Actually, they look a little tired. So don’t expect to see riveting game of Pong. Just marvel at the geek fun of it all and not the sleepy players.

If you’re really itching to play Pong again, Atari released a retro game system called the Atari Flashback 2 ($30). It features the same wood grain paneling and look of the Atari 2600. Games include Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede, Lunar Lander, Millipede, Missile Command, Combat and…. Pong.

Songbird - Open-Source “iTunes “

February 9th, 2006 by Keith in Miscellaneous Gadgets, Software

Songbird

If users find downloading Apple’s iTunes too much of a hassle, now what we have here is an Open-Source “iTunes”-look alike. Songbird is basically a Web player built from Firefox’s browser engine. As it is an open source, Songbird will run on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Furthermore, it supports user contributed, cross-platform extensions as well. But rather than hooking into one online music source (Apple’s iTunes Music Store), Songbird aims to talk to lot more others.

Previewing the Songbird is a little shaky at first, starting with the download from the website, taking a considerable amount of “effort”, seemly that the download traffic must have been quite congested. Somehow I felt that the program was a little buggy, as if there are some documentation which I could not run.

Nonetheless, as this is a still a Beta (Preview) product, yet to be finished, it’ll be interesting to see how it develops further down the road. Meanwhile users can download it from the website at Songbirdnest.com, or at its mirror site.

Rubik Table

February 8th, 2006 by Al in Retro Gadgets, Wacky Gadgets

Rubiks Cube Table
I always found the rubic cube a bit annoying, doing one side was easy, one side and a few rows not too bad but all 6 sides darn impossible. I was amazed to read recently the record for solving it is just over 11 seconds, geez that’s cazy.

Well this gadget like furniture is one rubics cube you’ll never need to solve as it’s a table. The rubics table is a giant sized version of the original rubics cube, which thankfully can’t be shuffled and would look great in any retro game room (pinball machine in the corner mandatory).

Vizrea Snap - First complete photo solution for camera phone users

February 7th, 2006 by Keith in Miscellaneous Gadgets, Software

Vizrea Snap

If you have heard of Flickr before, then then Vizrea will be almost very familar to you. Besides offering photo-sharing, organising, printing and blogging to you, Vizrea also completes the full package by providing the best service, catering especially for camera phone users.

Though it may be rumour, but I heard that some former Microsoft execs. started this photo sharing site, at the same time challenging the class of Flickr which currently offers similar service to users. Though the company may sound new, it is already getting a lot of publicity from several great press and blog sites.

Cat’s Water Bowl with Grass

February 7th, 2006 by Al in Miscellaneous Gadgets, Wacky Gadgets

Pet Feeding Water Fountain
This is the first time I’ve seen a pet water bowl and fountain combined, which is likely because I’ve only got boring old pet fish. For all you dog and cat lovers it’s a nifty idea which I’m sure your pet will enjoy. Just as I discover pet drinking fountains I find out they’re soon to be improved by the addition of, wait for it, grass, hmmm.

You’ll be able to get new pet drinking fountains that come with their own “Aqua Garden”, that will grow grasses (wheat, oats, barley, etc.) that cats supposedly love to eat. I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a cat liking non meaty products, I know when I used to have a cat years ago the only grass like thing it liked (a lot) was cat nip.

[Found on Strange New Products and will be supplied (later) by Drinkwell]

Real Time Traffic Reports

February 6th, 2006 by Al in Miscellaneous Gadgets

Traffic Map
If you’re sick of getting caught up in jams and want to be one step ahead of the rush hour masses a Seattle based company may have the answer by means of the Traffic Gauge, an ultra portable mobile traffic map.

The device looks very simple and easier to use, with the large screen showing a map overlaid with traffic information and highlights hot spots to be avoided if you want to get home on time.

It does have it’s limitations, primarily in the areas it covers. Presently it only has versions for San Francisco Bay, LA/Orange County and Seattle. Though we’d expect this to expand if the device takes off.

You can find further info on the Traffic Gauge site and with prices starting at $49 it offers pretty good value, if you’re in the right place.
