FreeWorld Dialup (FWD)

September 11th, 2005 by Marc in Vehicle Gadgets
I always faniced putting a PC in the car but there are some basic electrical issues to be overcome, such as how to not fry the thing when you connect it to the car power system! Opus solutions have come up with the answer - a PC case specifically designed for vehicle installation.
What’s so special? The thing that cought my eye is the power system. Designed for standard mini-ITX boards this case will wait until your engine is cranked before firing up the PC and it will gracefully shut the PC down again when you turn the ignition off. It also includes the regulation and filtering needed to wire the PC in without it going pop.
Combine with a bootable compact flash (or laptop hard drive) and some RAM and you’ve got a nice little system for…. errr…… ummm… well, who cares, it’s a PC in a car

September 11th, 2005 by Anita in Miscellaneous Gadgets
If you are looking for that perfect gift for someone that has everything or you are seeking a new way to listen to your favorite music with a hands free device then have to look at these MP3 Sunglasses.
These MP3 sunglasses will not only protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun, but will give you up to 8 ½ hours of music with rechargeable battery. They are wonderful for wearing outdoors at the beach or indoors when you wish to drown out other noises around you. You can listen to music while working in your office, working in the yard, or shopping. You will be able to drown out all the construction noises, kids crying, and any other noise that you deem annoying while you are trying to concentrate or just relaxing on the beach.
Left handed chequebooks
September 11th, 2005 by Marc in Miscellaneous GadgetsThe post about the left handed pen recently got me to thinking about a service that some banks here in the UK offer but don’t go out of their way to advertise: Left handed chequebooks (checkbooks for our US readers).
It’s a simple idea, they just put the binding on the right hand side of the book instead of the left so that you can open it, write cheques (checks) and get to the stub comfortably.
So if you’re a fellow southpaw, ask your bank about it. It’s just one of those small things that goes towards making life a little bit easier.

Stabilo left handed pen
September 9th, 2005 by Marc in Miscellaneous Gadgets
For a geek, communicating in the old fashioned scribblestick/dead tree manner is a pain. It’s slow, it uses long-forgotten muscle groups and the end result is (if you’re me) complete illegible to anyone else. Us southpaws also have the problem of that awkward grip on the pen and the invariable smudging that goes along with pushing your hand over fresh ink.
There’s nothing anyone can do about the speed and the legibility but Stabilo have at least tried to address the problems with grip and ink with the awkwardly named “’s Move” pen. OK so it’s aimed at kids. But then again so is most of the stuff on firebox so I don’t think we should let that put us off!
It’s got a nice chunky grip with thumb and finger indents moulded for left handed use and the special ink dries as soon as it hits the page so no more smudging. I’ve had one for a while and although I can’t say it’s made my writing any more legible it’s at least comfortable to hold (and smudge free, the ink really works!).
You can pick them up quite cheaply from anything lefthanded

Apple iPod Nano
September 8th, 2005 by Al in Electronic Gadgets, Audio/Video Gadgets
Apple have done it again and released yet another iPod and it’s tiny. Measuring just 0.27 inches thick and weighing in at (the blue corner) a measly 1.5 ounces.
It does look pretty cool and with prices starting at $99 I’m sure it will be on a few shopping lists. Comes in black or silver (obvious from the pics I know) and more importantly 2GB or 4GB versions both having a 1.5 inch color LCD screen.
