Jet-powered bicycle

June 17th, 2006 by Paz in Wacky Gadgets

Take 56 seconds to have a look at this superb video of a jet-powered bicycle, coming right up…!

It’s obviously a home made contraption, and we guessed probably from the sort of jet engines used in making model aeroplanes. There was no bumf that came with the video, for instance and we had so many questions such as “How fast can the thing go, what’s its range etc.?”, but we did find a few details about the jets from Google.

The jets are likely manufactured by a US company Jet Cat, and cost the best part of $4,000 each for the largest model, the Titan. They run on kerosene fuel and rotate at speeds of up to 123,000 RPM.

Another important tip; the exhaust gases reach a temperature of 770°C, so make sure your friends stay well back when following you.

But there are so many other questions that come to mind, such as do you need a special licence to operate a jet powered bicycle, how much is the road tax, insurance…

The voices sound American, and I wonder if they’re breaking the law by even taking that thing out on the public roads, as it looks like they’re doing there.

Hats off to the wonderful Geeks are Sexy team, for another great scoop.

June 17th, 2006 by Al in Drinking Gadgets

Ice Luge

This is an interesting looking drinking game for those hot summer days, the Party Ice Luge.

In order to play Party Ice Luge you need to fill included container with water, freeze it. Once frozen you have 2 luge runs to pour the beverage of your choice down and find 2 victims friends to slurp the ice cold drink as it exits the luge. Okay it’s not really game but I’m sure it will be pretty entertaining after you’ve had a few goes.

The Party Ice Luge is available from Firebox.

Vampire Slayer Act passed in California

June 17th, 2006 by Paz in Tech News

Californian legislators have approved the Vampire Slayer Act!

The unlikely name isn’t anything to do with Buffy’s campus activities, rather than an Act forcing gadget manufacturers to label devices showing how much energy they consume when on standby. We’ve already discussed the millions of tonnes of CO2 released into the atmosphere by gadgets on standby, and it seems the Californian lawmakers have listened to the coolest-gadgets.com team!!

The Barbecue Belt

June 16th, 2006 by Al in Garden Gadgets, Kitchen Gadgets

Barbecue BeltIf you thought the barbecue apron wasn’t quite manly enough another solution is at hand (or should that be waist), the barbecue belt.

The barbecue belt has enough containers and compartments for all those essential condiments (adjustable sauce anyone) and BBQ equipment. It would make a great fathers day gift, though probably a bit late now.

The barbecue belt is no longer available, as an alternative check out the barbecue apron.

Body Fat monitoring scales

June 16th, 2006 by Paz in Electronic Gadgets

Body Fat monitoring scales.

We’ve covered a few gadgets to help people on a diet, such as the nutritional scales from Metro Kitchen, but here’s another weapon in your armoury if you’re fighting the flab.

These scales monitor body fat, as well as total weight. Unlike conventional weighing scales, body fat monitors give you some feedback on how your diet is going, other than just your weight in pounds or kilos. My wife’s a dietician and she tells me that most people will benefit fairly immediately from a change in diet and moderate exercise, such as walking. The problem is that in the first few weeks, people won’t necessarily see any tangible difference using conventional weighing scales.
