AntWorks

January 5th, 2006 by Anita in Miscellaneous Gadgets

antworks
NASA designed this cool ant colony in the early days of the US space program. The idea they had was for astronauts to take the colony of ants into space to study their behavior in a zero gravity atmosphere.

The best part is that you can now have your ant colony created with the same technology that NASA was planning on using. Your ant colony will live in a jelly like habitat instead of dirt. You will be able to watch your ants every movement. The whole entire container is just the right size for display on your desk, nightstand or on a kitchen counter.

Instead of using normal dirt to fill your AntWorks has non-toxic gel already placed in the container for your ants home. You will have to poke four small holes into the gel to begin the tunnel network. After you have poked the holes, go found around 15 healthy looking ants to give your new ant town a population. All you have to do is place them in the AntWorks and then put on the lid. The ants will do the rest.

Electronic Do It Yourself Waterless Plant Alarm

January 4th, 2006 by Anita in Home Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets

plantalarm
Okay, I do not know about you, but I do not have a green thumb. I either over-water and drown the plants or leave them too dry and they wither away and die. But, this cool gadget will be sure to aid some of us in keeping our plants alive a little longer. As least if we forget to water them we will hear a nice alarm to remind us that they need water and while you are giving them this much needed essential fluid you could always say a kind word or two. Plants that get attention are known to grow better, or at least that is what I have been told.

The Waterless Plant Alarm has an adjustable variable resistor, is very simple to build, will run on two “AA” batteries and the alarm will definitely buss when there is no water detected in the soil.

Fork Sculptures

January 4th, 2006 by Al in Wacky Gadgets

fork art
I’m not the most arty of people and I’m often amazed at what people can do with just a few bits of colored chalk. When I came across this site showing sculptures made from good old fashioned dinner forks I was pretty impressed.

There are various pieces, conveniently sorted into different sections (Animals, Band, Humanic, Jewelry etc.) with prices starting from $10 (the most expensive I saw was the Grim Reaper at $1000). They’re pretty unusual pieces to have on your mantle peice and must be a conversation starter, Uri Geller eat your heart out.
