Cell phone used to check for ailments via breath

February 23rd, 2009 by Edwin in Medical Gadgets, Mobile Phones

It is interesting to note that rap mogul P. Diddy’s latest fragrance, I Am King, is inspired by his breath (yes, he actually said that in an interview with Ryan Seacrest on American Top 40!), and I guess this man must win all the best smelling breath competitions worldwide hands down if such a thing existed. Well, we’re going to look at the human breath today in a different light as Applied Nanodetectors Ltd (AND) of the UK has successfully rolled out a prototyped cell phone which was specially developed to detect a range of diseases, all from the user’s breath. It was being paraded at the International Nanotechnology Exhibition & Conference 2009. More on this special phone right after the jump.

Power Bar and Plug for DC distribution

February 22nd, 2009 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets

Fujitsu Component Ltd have teamed up with NTT Facilities Inc to deliver a brand new power bar and a power plug for 400V high-voltage direct-current distribution system. Both companies have laid claim that they successfully solved technical problems concerning the problematic arc discharge from open/closed-circuits and its influence on human body, and those are the exact two reasons which have been preventing commercialization thus far. It seems that for safety reasons, the power plug will come with a mechanical switch that prevents generation of voltage between power plug terminals unless loading apparatuses such as an ICT device is being used.

Internet Clock Radio

February 21st, 2009 by Edwin in PC Gadgets, Software

You know something? I find it amazing that watches are still in vogue - after all, the digital lifestyle sees us carry at least a couple of timepieces at any one time including our MP3 player, portable media player, cell phone, notebook or desktop. Guess a good watch is one that boasts a timeless design as well as accurate reading, while it wouldn’t hurt to have it come with diamonds studded all over to function as a fashion accessory. For folks who live on a much more meager salary, there are always more affordable alternatives around, and in this case, free. The Internet Clock Radio will need a basic (free again) version of the RealPlayer plugin to work, although Safari and Opera web browsers are not supported.

Stove Top design means you can cook anywhere … all you need is a tabletop

February 20th, 2009 by James in Home Gadgets, Kitchen Gadgets, Wacky Gadgets

Our friends over at Yanko have released an interesting design by Maurizio Maiorana for a fold up portable stop top mat which uses silver as a conductor. The “Cooka” incorporates silver because of it’s excellent thermal properties which allow for effective heating of pots and pans while keeping the tabletop nice and cool.

For those who are looking for the latest and greatest construction toy, like Lego or K’nex, then you have found what you are looking for with the Topodo.

Klutz has Fun with the Bristlebots

February 20th, 2009 by Mark R in Miscellaneous Gadgets, Toys

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Bristlebots, they are some homemade tech that debuted on the gadget/tech blogosphere in late 2007, involving nothing but toothbrush heads with directional bristles, cellphone-vibrator motors, and small batteries. Gadget blogs everywhere have been literally buzzing with video footage of these tiny guys moving around like artificial insects.

It appears the company Klutz has taken advantage of this new fad with a new book called Invasion of the Bristlebots. The book itself comes with “2 Live Bristlebots” that have “more zip, wilder action, and a control that lets you adjust a Bot’s behavior”. I’m not certain what is in this book, but I’m guessing it will open up to reveal some private Bristlebot battle arenas.

Philips Net TV

February 20th, 2009 by Mark R in Audio/Video Gadgets

I don’t know about you, but I hardly use my television to watch any show at its normal network broadcasting time. Yeah, practically all my television watching is done from my computer on sites like Hulu instead of the TV. It is no wonder that companies like NetGear are inventing applications like the Internet TV Player to link your computer to the TV for online TV watching.

It appears that Philips has decided to invest in this new Internet TV market with their new Net TV application. Net TV allows a user to access many websites from their television including YouTube, Funspot, TomTom, MeteoGroup, MyAlbum, Netlog, and even eBay.

The user can access these sites conveniently from their remote. This application is to be used on the 8000 and 9000 series of televisions. The 8000 series will require a wired Internet connection, while the 9000 will be completely wireless.
