USB Body Scales for the geek in you

by Edwin - on July 20, 2011

Keeping watch over your weight a good seven months after your New Year’s resolution in the eternal fight against the flab? Fret not, you have plenty of assistance in the form of nutritious meal replacement sachets, not to mention getting the right kind of tools to assist you in taking down details of your battle. For the inner geek, there is the USB Body Scales – and the name says it all.

Currently available for pre-order at £59.99 a pop (it will start to ship from August 11th onwards), this gizmo will get to work by measuring your essentials such as weight, body fat percentage and muscle tissue. Since the scale itself sports internal memory of its own, you need not look for scraps of paper to write down the daily statistics, as you can easily transfer all that information to a plugged in USB flash drive (not included, so use your own) in a jiffy.

Each USB Body Scale comes with the ION Healthsuite software so that you can check out your detailed readings in an easy-to-understand format, and it can even help you set goals for yourself.

Virtual Reality coming to the Sony Playstation?

by Mark R - on July 20, 2011

I didn’t visit Sony’s booth at CES last January, but apparently they had this pair of OLED VR goggles on display.

The Sony 3D virtual reality headset is not a product available for this year, but is actually more of a concept and prototype. The senior director of Sony Worldwide Studios has stated that the company is trying to do some research and development for some immersive VR.

So are we seeing another age of Virtual Boy? Hopefully it will be much better than that, since the technology of tracking has improved with the Kinect, not to mention the Move. Yes, the tracking is here. The screen resolution is also here, not to mention the processing power. What I’m trying to say is that the stars aligning for a very cool advancement in 3D in the near future.

Philips AmbientLED receives ENERGY STAR rating

by Mark R - on July 20, 2011

Generally, I usually do not review light bulbs on this blog. After all, it is a light bulb, a device that has been around since the time of Thomas Alva Edison. It’s hardly the coolest thing out today in our technological society.

However, it would appear that Philips has improved upon the device that changed everything. The AmbientLED can replace a 60 watt incandescent A19 bulb with a light output of 800 lumens, a voltage of 120 volts, and an energy use of just 12.5 watts. That all adds up to a life of about 25,000 hours, which the company somehow calculated to 15 years of use. I did the math, and it is about 3 years of use if the light is left on 24/7.

The AmbientLED has achieved an ENERGY STAR label, and, as you can see, the AmbientLED line has a unique A-shape. You may also have noticed that it is orange on the top. Believe me, it glows a Warm White when on, and it is quite bright.

Memorex Game Controller Plus and Wireless Sidekick Gaming Controller for the Wii

by Mark R - on July 19, 2011

I got a chance to try out some Wii controllers from Memorex, which include the Wireless Sidekick Controller and the Game Controller Plus.

The Wireless Controller Plus is the Wiimote that you see in the photo, and it has built-in Motion Plus. Besides that, it is essentially a Wiimote with some features that I will go in greater detail about after the jump.

The Wireless Sidekick Controller is a better Nunchuk as it is completely wireless. It gets a charge from a USB cable, and it syncs with the Wiimote with a plug-in adapter.

Jedibot makes Star Wars gaming impressive, most impressive

by Mark R - on July 19, 2011

While there are no shortage of Star Wars games on the market today, it is always difficult to put a new spin on them. I personally liked the Fleet Commander game that we reported on the other day.

The Fleet Commander game captured the massive starship battles from the movie, but this Jedibot captures the lightsaber battles from the trilogies. The Jedibot allows the user to fight with an automated arm, and it uses a Kinect to detect where the player has his lightsaber.

There is a video of it after the jump. As you can see, it is about is fast as Ben Kenobi or Darth Vader from the first film. Something tells me it will take a while before we get the lightning-fast moves of the prequel trilogy.

Robot from Japan does human speech

by Edwin - on July 19, 2011

Robots are really big in Japan as well as South Korea, as societies in both countries tend to adopt the use of robots around the home and at work far more than other countries – or at least, that is the impression that I get judging by blog posts which we filter through each day. Just how far and closely intertwined will robots be in our lives eventually? Well, they are certainly taking big steps towards being more realistic, leading us down the Uncanny Valley road headlong at speed.

Trust the Japanese to churn out a robot which is capable of replicating human speech – yes, real human speech instead of synthesized audio. Complete with moving lips as well, now how about that? Read all more about this robot-vaganza in the extended post.
