Jabra rolls out two more Bluetooth headsets for the masses

by Edwin - on December 10, 2008

Mention Bluetooth headsets and chances are you will hear the name Jabra pop up among your conversations, never mind the likes of Aliph and the rest. Jabra was there almost right from the start, and it was that name that got me introduced to the world of Bluetooth headsets where wearing a Borg-like contraption used to be all the rage a few years ago. I still find it funny whenever I see someone wearing one of these headsets, but it is nice to see time and technology advance to a point where Bluetooth headsets are not only stylish, they offer a greater deal of functionality without sacrificing on battery life. Would be interesting to see an in-ear Bluetooth headset one of these days so that there won’t be any more dangling bits that can be quite an eyesore. This time round, we have a couple of Bluetooth headsets from Jabra known as the M5390 and the BT530. More specific details on both will be available right after the jump.

Voltaic Systems and their new Generator Solar Bag

by Edwin - on December 10, 2008

We humans are extremely hard to please, but then again that could be a great trait that helps us pull through the rough times. Take for example, our need to do things much faster – it has led mankind from living in caves or foraging in forests to stay in huge metropolises over the millennia to where we are today, and in our quest to always better ourselves, new innovations and breakthroughs are occurring every single day. Same goes for gadgets and gizmos that are in the market – surely we won’t be content with just an iPod that plays music and comes with a black and white screen! See what we have today? The iPod touch in all its sleek glory. Well, the same goes for notebook bags as well – instead of offering a place that just totes your notebook and its accessories around, Voltaic Systems decided to take the plunge by unveiling its Generator solar bag that is able to harvest solar power to charge a notebook with less that a day’s worth of sun rays.

Chocolate Scrabble makes for an appetizing game

by Edwin - on December 10, 2008

I’ve always been rather wary of my English teacher back in school as she attempted to have the class live and breathe the language so that we’ll be well equipped to face the world upon graduation with a strong command of the language, and I certainly appreciate her efforts. If only she used Chocolate Scrabble instead to pique our interest instead of threatening us with detention as well as capital punishment, I mean, a nice whack on the behind with a cane. Chocolate Scrabble will definitely change your outlook about the game, as it offers the following :-

  • It’s Scrabble, but the pieces are made out of chocolate!
  • 32 pieces of chocolate wrapped up to look like Scrabble letters
  • A paper board, so you can play anywhere
  • If you win you receive a big prize – MORE chocolate!
  • If you don’t like chocolate this game is probably not for you
  • Unsuitable for nut allergy sufferers

Needless to say, this is a one time affair only, coz once you’ve eaten up the tiles, you’ll need to fork out £9.99 for another set. Can we have a gummy bear edition, please?

Vacuum robots can handle jobs in tall buildings

by Mark R - on December 9, 2008

I have a little story problem for you. Take your average office building with x number of floors, with y square feet of carpet per floor. Multiply x and y to get the total value of square feet of carpet for the building, and use it to obtain the value of z, the hourly salary of a janitor who needs to vacuum xy.

In case of the automated vacuum robot from Fuji Heavy Industries, the value of z is a whole lot less. This robot, which does not have an official name, is now being used on the Sumitomo building in Osaka City, Japan.

The vacuum robot is designed to roam independently to do its sucky job (I couldn’t help it, I’m sorry). It uses laser sensors to detect and steer around any obstacles in its way. It also has a camera, so it can be used for roving security.

So how does the vacuum robot go from floor to floor? Fortunately, the Sumitomo office building has an elevator, and the robot has a light transmission device that electronically tells the elevator what floor to go to. I would imagine that the robot takes its floors systematically, and then goes in for recharging after its job is done.

Shiro SQ-S PMP is Solar Powered

by Mark R - on December 9, 2008

I’m not sure if the world needs another type of PMP, but I will definitely give Shiro credit for trying something different.

Shiro has put a solar cell on the back of the SQ-S, which gives the user the option to charge the device with the power of the sun. Considering that power to PMPs is always an issue for mobile music, it is refreshing to see a PMP that does not require a wired charging method like an AC cord or USB cable.

The user has the option of using a USB cable if he or she wants to. Just to put it in perspective, it takes six hours with a “full sun” to charge the SQ-6, but only four hours with the USB. With a full charge, the SQ-S is capable of up to 38 hours of music playback and 10 hours of video playback.

eStarling ImpactV: A digital photo frame that supports video

by Mark R - on December 9, 2008

Yesterday, eStarling announced their newest digital photo frame, the ImpactV. The ImpactV has every feature of its predecessors, but what makes this one unique is that it supports video. Hence the name ImpactV (the V is for video and not the Roman Numeral five).

The ImpactV allows a user to take any video that he or she has recorded and upload it wirelessly to the frame. Since the ImpactV is Wi-Fi enabled, the video will automatically appear with DVD quality video and clear sound anywhere, provided there is a wireless connection. The user can also send still photos.
