OLE fire fighting beetle to the fore

by Edwin - on August 13, 2007

fireighting-robot.jpg

There are many reasons why forest fires happen, and they do plenty of harm not only to humans, but the animals living in that area would have lost their natural habitats as well while others that are trapped end up as burnt roast. As the good doctor always said, prevention is better than cure. But how does one go about monitoring the vast expanse of a forest while being efficient at it? The answer could lie in robots and not humans. At Magdeburg-Stendal FH researchers are working hard on fire fighting beetles that are more than capable of working their way through the uneven jungle terrain with ease, thanks to the help of half a dozen highly flexible legs. This fire fighting beetle has been dubbed the OLE, and you can read more about it after the jump.

Discovery Radio Control Freestyle GyroTruck

by Edwin - on August 13, 2007

gyrotruck.jpgI believe the Discovery Radio Control Freestyle GyroTruck will not only appeal to kids but adults as well. Chances are dad and son will tussle over the remote control, especially when this remote controlled device can speed along the pavement rather fast while performing hair-raising stunts without missing a beat. If you noticed, the gyro wheels are extremely large, multiplying the torque for an added speed boost while keeping a stable profile no matter what the terrain is. Powerful twin motors drive the GyroTruck ever onward, and it can even run at a 45-degree angle on tires and pegs, upside down, or right side up. At $39.95 a pop, this is will definitely impress more than just the neighborhood kids.

by Edwin - on August 13, 2007

retrousb.jpgJust when you thought packaging ideas have gotten old for USB flash drives, along comes the Mix Tape USB from Suck UK.

Remember back in the days before digital music players and MP3s? If you do, then you probably made compilations of all your favourite music, to share with your friends and loved ones, on good old fashioned blank cassette tapes. If you miss making mix tapes this product will inspire you again! Home taping never killed music!

I must say this is one of the more attractively packaged USB flash drives ever, coming in the form of a cassette cover. Looks pretty neat from all angles, eh?

by Edwin - on August 13, 2007

gelaskins-ipod.jpg

Everybody’s favorite plumbing twins, Mario and Luigi, certainly have had a rough night out if this iPod skin from GelaSkins is anything to go by. Made from 3M vinyl anti-scratch anti-UV coating that is easy to apply and equally easy to remove, this skin definitely adds more than a dash of character to your precious portable media player from Cupertino. I love the way both brothers are presented, eyebags and all complete with a Band-Aid adorning Luigi’s mug. If you haven’t yet gotten any protection for your iPod, perhaps this offering from GelaSkins will persuade you?

Drink up with Pac-Man and gang

by Edwin - on August 13, 2007

pac-man-shot-glasses.jpg

ClubNAMCO has announced half a dozen shot glasses that feature characters from the original Pac-Man game, and they are Pac-Man, Inky, Blinky, Winky, and Clyde, and a bunch of Cherries our hero lusts after. I suppose the arrangement of these shot glasses will probably be in total disarray once you’ve knocked back your 15th shot of vodka for the night. There’ll only be 2,500 of these in the world, hence the $29.99 price attached to each glass (!). For those who are too inebriated to count, all six will cost $179.94.

Kameraflage sends a secret message

by Edwin - on August 12, 2007

kameraflage.jpgIt seems that cameras of yore and even digital cameras of today tend to snap additional information during a photo shoot compared to what our normal eyes can see. Most of the time, these strange snapshots often depict the supernatural – such as a person who has died a long time ago or even a hideous looking apparition that sends your skin crawling whenever you take a look at it. While many who believe claim that these are not doctored images or deliberately concocted scams, you would be interested to know that technology exists today which enables you to show off your artistic streak that will only be revealed when a photo is taken. This technology is known as Kameraflage, thanks to the silicon chips within digital cameras that enable you to see a broader spectrum of light that is invisible to the naked human eye.
