Sprint’s 3G/4G USB Modem U300

by Mark R - on December 18, 2008

Yesterday, Sprint announced that it will launch a dual-mode 3G/4G wireless broadband modem specifically designed for laptops. This device, known as the Sprint 3G/4G USB Modem U300, is designed to plug right in the USB port for quick Internet access.

The U300 is able to access Sprint’s 3G cellular data network and the new WiMax wireless network that Sprint is building as part of their new Clearwire program. This 4G program will allow download speeds between 2 Mbps and 4 Mpbs.

The 4G network has only been recently launched in the Baltimore area, but it has been slow to catch on. With any luck, 4G should be in place in every major city by the end of 2009. If a user should be out of range of the 4G network, it will automatically go to the 3G, which has download speeds of 600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps.

Brando’s Wireless Illuminated Super Tiny Keyboard

by Mark R - on December 18, 2008

There is nothing that gives a gadget blogger more pleasure than to report on gadgets from the Far East like Thanko and Brando. You might remember the MP4 Camera watch I reported on a few days ago from Thanko, and today’s interesting Asian product is the Wireless Illuminated Super Tiny Keyboard (actual name) from Brando.

This keyboard has three obvious features in its name. The first is the wireless capacity, and it uses 2.4GHz rather than Bluetooth. The second is the backlit feature that makes it glow in the dark, which requires two AAA batteries to stay in operation. The third is its size. I’m not certain why you would want a tiny keyboard, but considering how these netbooks are getting increasingly smaller, there might be a demand for smaller keyboards for a desktop.

Ovation iDea: A Guitar with built-in MP3 Player

by Mark R - on December 18, 2008

Since Guitar Hero has been turning out an entirely new generation of guitar players, it stands to reason that real guitars would become more technologically advanced to help new guitarists. I suppose this is why guitar-making company Ovation had a brilliant iDea of a guitar that is equipped with a built-in MP3 Player.

The Ovation iDea is the first of its kind, and it is packed with features. It allows the user to play back a song so the guitarist can play along. If the guitarist wants to learn how to play a new song, the iDea will even slow down the playback.

The iDea can also record the user’s playing, and even has a built-in condenser microphone so his or her singing will be recorded too. It also allows repeating or looping of a track for continuous practicing with previously recorded music. Once a singer/player has finished recording, he or she can download them onto the PC via USB.

The USB Gas Stove Cup Warmer

by Ally - on December 18, 2008

One of the most obnoxious things is when you finally decide to take a break from work to make a cup of coffee or tea. Then after you’ve brought back the steaming cup, you get wrapped up in work again and inevitably it gets cold. You don’t want to get back up to heat it, either because you’re busy or are just too lazy. Which is when a cup warmer comes in very handy. This isn’t the first cup warmer to be sold, but this one offers a retro design. That at least gives it a little more edge above the competition.

The 6ft long R/C German King Tiger Tank

by Ally - on December 18, 2008

Now this is a toy.  Not a toy you’d pick up for your kids necessarily, more a toy that you make the kids very angry when you tell them they’re forbidden to touch it.  Sure, it could be a nice bonding experience to let them stand next to you as your tank tows a full-sized car.  However, letting them take over the controls might be a difficult experience.  Especially considering the amount of power it has, it could easily tear up property if it were in the wrong hands.

The Liquid Lamp adds spooky lighting

by Ally - on December 18, 2008

It’s rare that you get to have a lamp that is just a little creepy.  It manages to look chic, but it still looks like blood is oozing out of the lamp shade.  It’s possible the pooling blood thing was not the intention of the designer, they might have been thinking of red paint.  Especially since there is a version with a red lampshade and white liquid pouring out.  Which is far less interesting than the blood red leaking out.

Toasty Toes help you stay warm

by Edwin - on December 18, 2008

With the cold winter upon some of us, it makes perfect sense to find ways and means to stay warm. If you don’t like to wear a pair of socks but can’t stand freezing your feet off, perhaps the Toasty Toes might be of help?

Toasty Toes is adjustable, and may be used flat, inclined, or upright as a radiant heat panel. But at 90 watts, less than a standard 100-watt light bulb, this heated foot rest uses a fraction of the energy of a standard 1500-watt space heater. In addition to being more cost-efficient, Toasty Toes is safer than a traditional space heater as it never heats higher than 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that space heaters, including both fixed and portable varieties, are associated with 21,800 residential fires every year. ETL listed, Toasty Toes never gets hot enough to ever cause a fire, but still delivers comfortable, radiant heat to where it’s needed most–to your feet and lower legs.

It tips the scales at just five pounds, and with a 12″ x 18″ measurement, you will be able to bring this with you on your travels without taking up too much luggage space. If you’re looking for an ergonomic, heated footrest that won’t be a burden on your wallet this winter season, Toasty Toes make for a pretty good candidate.
