Human Joysticks – NewsBreaker Live

May 16th, 2007 by methodshop in Gaming Gadgets, Tech News

Tired of the boring movie trivia slide shows that theaters play before the movie? How about an interactive game that the entire theater can play at the same time?

MSNBC.com has this live video game experience called NewsBreaker Live that has entire theaters acting like Human Joysticks.

NewsBreaker Live is modeled after the classic video games like BrickBreaker and Arkanoid. The game combines live msnbc.com RSS newsfeeds, the movement of the audience as a human joystick, and the big screen as a game board. Groundbreaking motion-sensor technology dubbed “CrowdGaming” tracks the entire audience’s collective movement (watch video clip). Audience members control the game by moving in sync to smash up msnbc.com’s colorful brick spectrum of news with a bouncing ball and paddle.

As far as I know, this is the first in-theater, audience participatory video game. And honestly, I think it’s pretty cool. Way better than being forced to stare at slides of movie trivia and ads for local used car dealerships. You can play an online version of NewsBreaker Live at newsbreakergame.com.

If you live in a dangerous city, or if you’re planning on visiting one, it might be a good idea to take one of the ArchPort’s sandals or sneakers with you. These products have large hidden compartments in the soles, so you can stash your cash, ID, the key to your house or hotel room, credit cards, and whatever you find appropriate, as long as it fits in there.

World’s coolest keyboard, with “enthusiast” price to match

May 16th, 2007 by Marc in Conceptual Gadgets, PC Gadgets

Optimus
Last year several sites reported on what looked like a fantastic piece of concept design, the Optimus keyboard. Every key would be a separate miniature LED display, programmable from the PC. Want a gaming specific setup, or special keys for photoshop? No problem, just send the appropriate configuration to the keyboard and watch it rearrange itself.

Today I received an email telling me that they’ll be taking pre-orders in a couple of days (countdown here) so it looks like the ultimate PC accessory may yet be a reality. Of course you could buy a whole new PC with the $1500 they want for this, but that wouldn’t have 114 individually programmable, whackable, backlit OLED displays would it?

(No, that wasn’t a typo – I really did say $1500. $1564 to be precise, but who’s counting the change at that level?)

GPS Mirror watches out for you

May 16th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Vehicle Gadgets

gps-mirror-radar.jpg

Your rear view mirror is certainly an important point of reference whenever you drive a vehicle, but at times it becomes a liability to you since it has blind spots (for certain vehicle makes) and cheaper versions do not come with an anti-glare coating, blinding you momentarily whenever the driver behind follows you at a certain distance. The GPS Mirror goes the extra mile when it comes to watching out for you, pro-actively seeking out potential hazards thanks to the technology that comes with each purchase.

Super Mario Sound Drop keychains are the bomb

May 16th, 2007 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets

smb-sounddrops.jpg

Everybody loves Mario – you can tell by the millions and millions of copies of games sold around the world where the rotund plumber and his brother starred. You know Princess Peach and the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom are in good hands whenever our moustached friends are around, which is why it gives us the extra sense of security in this day and age where terrorists abound to be able to hold a little bit of Mario hope in our hands with the Super Mario Sound Drop keychains.

Sweatin’ while you work …

May 16th, 2007 by James in Miscellaneous Gadgets

The Mayo Clinic vertical workstation

The Mayo Clinic vertical workstation promises users that they could lose up to nearly 70 pounds by merely going to work. That’s because this vertical workstation is combined with a treadmill and allows for exercising the body as well as the mind – which must contend with a day long duty of sending emails, paying bills, and writing reports.

The prototype Tread Desk is estimated to cost about $1500 and is part of its Office of the Future research, conducted by researchers in the Non-exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) lab at Mayo Clinic. They came up with the idea and built the prototype environment in their own office space after a Mayo Clinic report published in the British Journal of Sports medicine found an average overweight office worker could burn up to 100 calories an hour while walking a mere one mile an hour while they work. That won’t even break a sweat. And since the world is mobile these days, employees can use mobile phones and headsets to take phone calls while they are working.

Folding helmet

May 16th, 2007 by Al in Vehicle Gadgets

Folded a-Bike Folding bike helmet

Fellow writer Tiago did a post on the foldable A-Bike a couple of months ago, I’ve just had an email from Firebox saying that they are also now stocking this crazily small folding bike for £149.95.

We all know how important it is to protect your bonce when you’re out cycling in the city so to go with the folding bike they also have the Stash Helmet (animated above), so you may still look a bit of a plonker cycling around on what looks like a distorted scooter but at least your grey matter has a bit of added protection.
