Creative Japan introduces the SoundBlaster X-FI Audio Notebook

May 9th, 2007 by James in Audio/Video Gadgets, PC Gadgets, Tech News

Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook

I have always found it annoying that geeks in Japan get way cooler technology before the rest of the world, and sometimes exclusively.

And with the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook for your laptop, is likely no different. the English translation may be a bit spotty, but from what I gather from it, the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook is the first sound card which corresponds to ExpressCard™/54 extended module standard for notebook PCs. It will provide the same stunning Dolby 7.1 surround sound audio enjoyed in the XiFi Xtreme line for desktops and uses the X-Fi Xtreme Fidelity audio technology. That includes the X-Fi Crystalizer™, which promises to reconstruct sound quality that is lost due to MP3 compression, as well as the X-Fi CMSS®-3D technology which makes experiencing a movie in Dolby 7.1 surround sound almost an identical experience on headphones as it is with actual speakers.

Ivy League Grad Gets Lowest SAT Score as Experiment

May 9th, 2007 by methodshop in Tech News

At the age of 33, Colin P. Fahey decided to throw away his dignity, mock his Ivy League education, disgrace his Master’s degree, and prove that in just over three hours he could answer every question on the SAT incorrectly!

If you don’t live in the US, then you may not know exactly what the SAT is. The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is a dreaded exam that all high school students in the United States have to take for college admissions. The SAT is given multiple times a year at thousands of testing centers throughout the US. Unless there are special circumstances, the test is given on a Saturday, starting at approximately 9:00 AM in each time zone. So basically if you aren’t paying attention, a single SATurday morning can ruin the rest of your life!

Back in 2003 when Collin took the test, 1600 was a perfect score. Remember, Collin is a smart guy. He’s an Ivy League Grad. But is he smart enough to get every question wrong? What was Collin’s final SAT score? Just 400 points combined (math & verbal). In case you are curious, 400 points is the lowest SAT ‘raw score’ in history. Congratulations to Collin.

But there’s always room for improvement. Collin accidentally got 2 questions right in the math section. I guess you can say Collin intentionally failed at failure. How humiliating! Maybe he’ll do worse next time.

Sure 400 seems low . . . but it rounds up to like 540 Canadian right? You can read more about Collin’s experiment here.

SoundTile- Speakers for the shower

May 9th, 2007 by Al in Home Gadgets

Shower Speaker

I do enjoy listening to music whilst in the shower, though my little Home Simpson radio is not the most stylish of bathroom accessories. The Kohler SoundTile speakers are the ideal way of enjoying music in the modern bathroom.

Kohler also produce various body-sprays and shower-heads in the tile format, to which the SoundTile is the perfect match. A pair of speakers will set you back $295 which depending on the sound quality (of which I know not) that’s not a bad price.

More info available from Kohler, found via Electronic House thanks Rachel.

IRIBIO – The Iris-scanning mouse

May 9th, 2007 by Andi in Electronic Gadgets, PC Gadgets, Spy Stuff, USB Gadgets

iribio full
Biometrics are the rage today. You can use your fingerprints to secure your data, to enter your home and, of course, to access your computer. There are fingerprint readers on mice, keyboards and you can buy them as stand-alone devices too.

But fingerprint scanners are just not ‘in’ anymore. The trend is pointing towards iris or retinal scanners. A Korean company called Qritek have created an affordable iris scanner, and have decided to stuff it in a mouse.

Toxic waste clothes bin

May 9th, 2007 by Al in Home Gadgets, Wacky Gadgets

toxic binIf you’re one of those students people that decides which pair of socks to wear by throwing them up to the ceiling and waiting to see which ones drop down first then this is the clothes bin for you, the Toxic Socks Clothes Bin.

Now instead of leaving socks and undies scattered around the bedroom floor you can warn your fellow house mates with this bright yellow linen basket. Considering it costs £29.99 (~$60) which could alternatively fund a students night out I can see being a very rare sight in any halls of residence.

Giddy up, we’ve got a horse to flog

May 9th, 2007 by Edwin in Childrens Gadgets, Remote Control Toys, Toys

horse-racing-set.jpg

Horse racing isn’t exactly my cup of tea, but attend any race during the weekend and chances are you’ll be seeing more money change hands that day than you’ll ever do in a single day at the bank. For those who are trying to wean themselves off the horse race betting habit (as well as others who are looking for a suitable racing toy for their kids) can always check out the Horse Racing Challenge Set that features a full fledged miniature race track, some infrared remote controlled horses, and a whip to get those mounts moving – nah, I’m kidding. You get a tiny handheld transmitter which is then used to flog those horses across the finish line. A fine start for kids who want to grow up and be a jockey.
