BlackBerry and Optimus Maximus collide with new concept

by Mark R - on February 5, 2009

This next device is a concept from a designer named Billy May which is a mix of the BlackBerry 7130 and the Optimus Maximus.

For those of you who have been asleep for the past few years and don’t know what the Optimus Maximus is, it is a keyboard with every button an individual OLED screen. This can be good for making shortcuts to your favorite websites by putting a picture of its logo on the shortcut button.

We already reported on its much-delayed release last year, and I suppose that putting Optimus Maximus technology on a BlackBerry is the next logical step for OLED keyboards.

The Maestro is Guitar Hero-like guitar teacher

by Mark R - on February 5, 2009

I have been seeing this gadget on many a tech blog this morning, and it is not hard to see why. After all, if there is one thing that gadget-lovers love, it is Guitar Hero, and this Maestro is designed to teach geeks how to play the guitar for real.

I believe we have already covered a device like this by Roland at CES, but this was for a keyboard, with a guitar version to come out soon. The Maestro is currently a concept from that fun website that we love to peek at every once in a while, Yanko Design.

As you can see from the photo, the Maestro clamps onto the guitar and then uses lasers to point to the right frets. How can it do this? You need to have an MP3 copy of the song on an SD and then put it on the Maestro.

Joby Zivio Boom

by Mark R - on February 4, 2009

It is amazing the swag that you can get at CES 2009. Who would have thought that I would walk into CES unveiled with nothing but a free press bag, and walk out with a new Bluetooth headset?

All of this is thanks to Joby, the company who gave us the Gorillapod Go-Go Collection. They allowed me to review the Zivio Boom, which is one of the most unique headsets that I have seen. The Zivio Boom has a microphone that can extend outward like a radio antenna for better sound quality on the speaker’s end.

Beyond that, the features of the Zivio Boom are pretty standard. For example, all buttons are conveniently located on the side, and it has 10 hours of talk time and 200 hours of standby time. It’s wireless range is about 10 meters or 33 feet.

The Zivio boom not only gives the user better sound, but it has a look that doesn’t follow the normal Bluetooth headset wearing crowd. After all, we are living in an age where Bluetooth headsets are a dime a dozen, and I’m sure you know at least one person who wears their headset 24/7.

The Diana F + Mr. Pink Camera

by Ally - on February 4, 2009

If you’re one of the photographers that still strongly prefers film, you should check out the Diana F + Mr. Pink.  I’m not sure why they insisted upon naming the camera that, but they did nonetheless.  To top things off, the camera comes in a startlingly bright pink.  Which although some pink products do annoy me, this one actually wears the pink quite well.  Overall the camera has a fun look and the photographs it takes are also just as interesting.

Couple-saving Gadget Automatically Lowers the Toilet Seat

by Mark R - on February 4, 2009

Since Valentine’s Day is coming up, I usually like to report on gadgets that will bring couples closer together. It is my pleasure to report on a cool gadget that will settle an age-old argument between husbands and wives world wide: leaving the toilet seat up.

Ironically, it wasn’t some big electronics giant who made this, but a group of students from Skjern Technical College in Denmark. Somehow it can end the endless comic routine without using additional energy, but my sources do not say how.

The USB Lounge Lamp for those lacking outlets

by Ally - on February 4, 2009

If you have a serious shortage on outlets, but need a light for next to your computer this lamp would come in handy.  It’s powered by your USB port.  It’s of course pretty small, since it is USB powered.  I don’t know that I’ve ever been so desperate for outlets, that I wanted a lamp that can be plugged into my computer.  However, apparently someone has had the dilemma and doesn’t have access to a power strip of any kind.  At least this is one of the few USB gadgets that actually is aesthetically appealing and not in the least bit cheesy.

Printer runs on Coffee Grounds

by Mark R - on February 4, 2009

It appears that not only is coffee good to the last drop, but the dregs are now good for printing a document. Yes, someone has actually invented a printer that uses old coffee grounds as ink, and to make it even more interesting, the printer does not even require electricity.

This coffee and manually powered printer was not entirely the product of pure inspiration, but it is an entry in the Greener Gadgets competition. The RITI printer is designed by Joen Hwan Ju, and it has generated a lot of buzz on the gadget blogosphere. In fact, I’m surprised that someone on this blog hasn’t covered this already.

In case you haven’t heard how the RITI printer works, you have to place the remnants of your wet and dirty coffee filter inside an ink cartridge with some water. Then you manually move the cartridge back and forth and it will mark up the paper. The cartridge can be easily emptied by throwing the twice-used grounds into a compost bin.
