LG officially launches the Renoir

October 6th, 2008 by Edwin in Mobile Phones, Photography

LG has slowly but surely been gaining the trust by people worldwide for its brand of cell phones, and they have certainly come a long way from their humble beginnings. Here we have a brand new handset that is set to blow your mind away - the LG Renoir, also known by its more formal moniker, the LG KC910. This slim handset is packed with a bunch of features, including a full touch screen display as well as an 8 megapixel camera. Granted, cell phone cameras still lack the sensors to make them the equal of standalone digital cameras, but that doesn’t mean they cannot capture sweet looking images under the ideal conditions (bright light and stationary subjects). More on the LG Renoir right after the jump.

Hitachi does it again with wireless streaming camcorder

October 3rd, 2008 by James in Audio/Video Gadgets, Photography

It isn’t the first time Hitachi has sent shockwaves in the video industry, but it’s certainly the first time anyone has bothered to cut the cord between camera and receiver. Demonstrating a prototype at CEDIA this week, Hitachi executives showcased the means by which the camera, dubbed the WOOO, can stream HD video to a TV display completely wirelessly. The Wooo was able to AVCHD video and stread it across a standard IEEE802.11g module using SSDIO. The TV was able to receive it thanks to a wireless receiver plugged into it and acting as an access point. A few things have to be worked out, however.

LG KC910 "Renoir"

September 29th, 2008 by Marc in Mobile Phones, Photography

KC910_m Another week, another LG product launch. That’s what it feels like at the moment anyway. Last week it was the turn of the Korean giant’s mobile phone division with the UK debut of the KC910 "Renoir".

The successor to the popular Viewty, the Renoir is a slim device with a nearly full face touch screen. LG are pushing the device’s multimedia credentials, highlights being certified DivX playback, Dolby enhanced sound and an 8 megapixel camera with lots of trick modes.

It’s launching in the UK imminently on all the major networks and LG are bundling an 8GB memory card in the box to take advantage of all that multimedia goodness.

First impressions are good - I had the chance to examine one fairly closely at the launch and it’s a light, responsive device (with a blinding flash for the camera!). The standard software bundle includes the usual web browser, email client, calendar and an assortment of games. The OS is a completely custom affair (not based on Windows mobile or Symbian) so it takes a little getting used to. Once you get your head around it though it’s easy enough to use.

Hopefully I should be getting my paws on one in the not too distant future, so expect a more complete write up soon. In the meantime, check out Tracy and Matt’s coverage of the launch and take in the full specs after the jump.

Wirelessly download pictures from a Samsung camera to your computer? Maybe Nabee

September 26th, 2008 by Mark R in Digital Cameras, Photography, USB Gadgets

I believe we have previously reported on devices that can help users wirelessly download images from a camera directly to the PC. One of the most famous is the Eye-Fi, a memory card that allows such a transfer, and now there is the Nabee.

The Nabee is designed by Samsung Techwin and Alereon, and designed specifically for wireless connectivity with Samsung brand cameras. All the user has to do is plug one end into the camera, and plug the other into the PC with a USB key. The transfer is fast, and efficient up to 10 meters.

When Kodak announced the Zi6 pocket HD Camcorder, it made serious waves. Now, RCA is responding by releasing their own HD version based on their Small Wonder line of pocket camcorders. The EZ300HD will sell for $160 and will shoot 720p HD video and shoot digital still pictures. Casio High Speed EXILIM EX-FH20 is one of the fastest on the market

September 16th, 2008 by Mark R in Digital Cameras, Photography

We’ve covered Casio’s EXILIM series before, and they have just recently announced their new HIGH SPEED EXILIM series, which includes the Pro EX-F1. That camera was released earlier this year, and it has to its credit as being the “world’s fastest digital camera”.

The EX-F1 can shoot at 60fps and record high speed movies at 1,200 fps. Now Casio has recently unveiled the EX-FH20, a camera that is capable of shooting 40fps and can record video footage at 1,000 fps. Of course, you don’t have to record video that fast, as the HD movie function is capable of 30fps at a resolution of 1,280 x 720.

The company gave the EX-FH20 a compact body that is 27% smaller than the EX-F1, and is also 28% lighter. The EX-FH20 has 9.1 megapixels, and a wide angle zoom lens of 20X.

Lumix DMC-G1 is the world’s smallest D-SLR

September 12th, 2008 by Mark R in Digital Cameras, Photography

Most of you already know that I am always instantly skeptical whenever some new product comes out saying that it is the world’s smallest or lightest, and Panasonic says that the Lumix DMC-G1 is both the smallest and lightest D-SLR.

So how small and light is the Lumix DMC-G1? For starters, the camera itself is based on a new Micro Four Thirds System standard, which completely removes the need for an internal mirror structure. Not only does this new system standard reduce the camera’s size by half, its decreases the weight of the Lumix DMC-G1 to 385 grams.

The DMC-G1 is a 12.1 megapixel camera that has several other features including Intelligent Exposure, Mega O.I.S., Intelligent Scene Selector, AF Tracking, Face Detection, Live MOS, My Color Mode, as well as an HDMI output.
