BART to roll out Wi-Fi access on all trains by 2011

February 2nd, 2009 by Edwin in PC Gadgets, Vehicle Gadgets

Ah, California – the state that churns out most of the GDP for the entire US, and is a champion for green technology and lifestyle albeit being one of the more expensive places to live in especially if you want to plant yourself in its major cities. San Francisco’s BART commuter railway system has plans to roll out Wi-Fi access on all of its trains and stations by the time 2011 comes about in a 20-year deal that was signed last Friday with Wi-Fi Rail. This means all 104 miles of track and 43 stations will allow passengers to check their email in double quick time without having to rely on a data plan, although there is a price to pay – $30 per month. Makes us wonder whether this is really worth it or not unless you have a really, really long commute each day and cannot bear to be away from an Internet connection for more than 30 minutes. In this case, we think carrying around a 3G modem to work with your laptop is a better idea, although you might be plagued with spotty connections when going through tunnels. Ah well, bring a book along then – the email can wait.

Audiovox Corporation goes for mobile entertainment

January 17th, 2009 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Vehicle Gadgets

Ever gone for a long road trip with kids at the back, only to get asked about a million times (I’m exaggerating, but at least it feels like it) the dreaded question, “Are we there yet?”. For seasoned parents, they would know how to stock up the vehicle with their kids’ favorite things to keep them occupied, be it books, toys or video games. I suspect most kids prefer video games, as that is much more entertaining compared to books which actually require one to work his/her imagination. Having said that, Audiovox’s solution is to introduce the first rear-seat mobile entertainment system in the industry that features a fully integrated PS2 entertainment system.

Airline Passenger Restraint Device

January 6th, 2009 by Edwin in Vehicle Gadgets

Gillen Industries is proud to bring us its latest device – the Airline Passenger Restraint Device. This nifty little gizmo is meant to assist the airline industry when it comes to controlling unruly passengers. We’re not too sure whether the Hulk is able to remain shackled in these, but we suppose even a testosterone-laden WWE superstar will find it hard to squirm his way out of this. After all, the Airline Passenger Restraint Device is made from high-strength materials with an innovative design that allows airline employees to quickly and safely restrain individuals who pose a danger to themselves or other passengers during a flight. Relying on heavy duty, rip-stop nylon mesh fabric and reinforced with auto-type seat belt material, the Airline Passenger Restraint Device will restrict upper-body mobility while still allowing for total airflow so that suffocation and heat exhaustion won’t pose a risk. At least this is safer than a taser on-board, eh.

Ford has new ‘active park assist’ system

January 3rd, 2009 by Edwin in Vehicle Gadgets

How many of you out there who drive hate to perform parallel parking? While it isn’t exactly tough when you have training poles to guide you during a test, to attempt so while you’re on your own is a totally different story especially for beginners and new drivers. Ford understands that not everyone is a natural parallel parker (if there’s such a thing), and has introduced its new Active Park Assist system in its Lincoln MKT and MKS lines. The Active Park Assist will be available in mid-2009 onwards as an option on the 2010 Lincoln MKS sedan and new Lincoln MKT crossover, relying on an ultrasonic-based sensing system while using the Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) to help place the vehicle in an optimal position for parallel parking, all the while calculating the optimal steering angle to quickly steer the vehicle into a parking spot.

Tire pressure caps keep you informed

December 26th, 2008 by Edwin in Vehicle Gadgets

All vehicle owners should make sure that their tires are properly inflated (and I don’t mean the spare tire around your waist that’s hanging downwards) if they have maximum mileage and optimal road safety on their minds. Unfortunately, most people don’t take the trouble to check their tire pressures regularly, which results in faster wear and tear on their wheels that could compromise road safety as well. With these special pressure valve caps, you can check your tire pressures at a glance without having to use those pesky tire pressure gages. Available in 32 psi and 36 psi color-coded caps, they will retail for $7.98 each.

ProClip offers a new range of device holders

December 11th, 2008 by Edwin in Vehicle Gadgets

ProClip USA, Inc. has just rolled out a bunch of new device holders that were specially designed to mount the G1 to your vehicle of choice, be it a car, truck or SUV, on its dashboard or console. These holders were designed and manufactured in Sweden by Brodit AB and have been custom made just for the G1, having it lie down comfortable and securely to vehicle specific ProClip dashboard mounts. The end result is simple – you get a much better view of the G1 as well as easier access the moment this two-part solution (Device Holder plus Vehicle Mount) is attached. You will then be able to turn the holder either vertically or horizontally in closed and open positions, respectively. ProClip holders also have the option of attaching it to other manufacturers’ vehicle mounts or any other flat surface.

LIFT Concept Car takes parking up

November 25th, 2008 by Mark R in Conceptual Gadgets, Vehicle Gadgets

One of our present-day problems that will only get worse in the future is parking. There are only so many places to put cars in the big city. I’m not looking forward to the days when parking garages will be as high as the Empire State Building.

Maybe we can use the parking method seen in I, Robot. Remember the scene where Will Smith parks his car, and then a giant robot arm takes his car and parks his car in a futuristic rack full of cars?

There is similar option for parking in the future called the LIFT. As you can see, this three-wheeled car has a back wheel behind it that can connect to an overhead track. Now the car can be put in an out-of-the-way place.

Lemur Autovision to help increase road safety

November 22nd, 2008 by Edwin in Vehicle Gadgets

If used correctly, that is. The Lemur Autovision is a device that is a snap to install in just about any vehicle, and it helps you get a clearer picture on your driving, recording important information like speed, distance and brakes while you tear up asphalt in your vehicle. Parents who review such data after their kids have taken out the family car for a spin will be able to better advise the younger ones on picking up life-saving pointers when driving.

Some of the features available on the Lemur Autovision include :-

  • Real-time feedback
  • Reports speed, distance, brakes
  • Convenient keychain LCD
  • Easy to install
  • Affordable – no monthly fees
  • Tamper Proof and PIN protected

You can pick up the Lemur Autovision for $99.95 a pop, and unless used responsibly, it will remain pretty much useless when it comes to cutting down the number of road accidents and fatalities. Still, a tool like this should not go unnoticed as any bit could go a long way in helping us make our roads safer for everyone.
