Remote Control Glass

February 9th, 2007 by Al in Drinking Gadgets, Remote Control Toys

Booze Cruze

If you ever thought you were good with remote control cars this has got to be the ultimate test, Booze Cruze, an R/C car with a glass on top.

Instructions are pretty simple:
1. Fill the glass with a liquid of your choice (we recommend water beer)
2. Set up the race course as desired.
3. Drive the course without spilling a drop

I’m sure there’s a drinking game to be made here and it also makes an easy way of serving drinks. Available from Gadget Box, thanks Arran.

Short periods of fun, followed by mild crashing, RC Planes

February 1st, 2007 by Fred in Remote Control Toys, Toys

My compadre in crime recently purchased a twin motored, low cost RC plane from hobbytron.com (this time it wasRC bomber from hobbytron a real purchase and not a giveaway, FYI for true believers).

It’s the one shown here. We test em’ for you!

I mention this because, well RC vehicles have come a long way,,, and they still have a way to go.

For 41.97$ USD, you get a polypropylene body, motors, controllers and the like. However, these low cost RC units are so low cost that the control mechanisms utilized on them tend to make them so difficult to control that playing with them is harder than starting out a new game on Hero mode.

The Picoo Z helicopter or whatever the proper name for it is now, seemed the closest to achieving control and low cost, but it was still fraught with difficulties for play. Additionally, my apologies to the guys at Silverlit who really did it right and now have litigation fights all day to clean their good name, because of a bunch of scammers knocking them off.

In terms of flight characteristics for this plane,,,, well Sybill.

Yes the famous lady of multiple personalities is an apt description. For flight you toss the plane into the wind as you give it a good punch of throttle. As the controller is a simple two stick unit, the left (and already centered stick) only has the half length forward throw to control throttle forward. For side to side control the right stick on the controller simply adds more power to one side and less to another so that the motors make the turn for you. Because of this, I can make this direct advisement, you need a huge space to play with this. Read the rest of this entry »

First Cool CES Toy - The BladeRunner Recon

January 6th, 2007 by Al in CES 2007, Remote Control Toys

BladeRunner Recon

After 20 hours of traveling and queuing I had to choose between drinking and gambling or attending the first official CES event of 2007, CES Unveiled and am I pleased the geeky side of my head won that argument.

The CES show opens good and proper on Monday but tonight they gave us a bit of a preview of what to expect. There were 30 or so exhibits to have a look and play aroud with (the main show is host to something like 2,700 spread over 65 miles of carpet) and the one that particularly caught my eye was the BladeRunner Recon remote control helicopter. The top of your head, on Google Earth @ 1meter resolution!

January 5th, 2007 by Fred in Miscellaneous Gadgets, Remote Control Toys, Software, Tech News

The good folks at Google Earth (you have downloaded it, haven’t you) have some seriouspictearth fans by the name of Pict`Earth.

They’ve got a great little bit of gear and software. They provide the coolest service for viewing high resolution overhead images.

A small RC airplane flies at low level and records high resolution video. The video is then placed into Google Earth and is actively used to display nap of the earth images.

One of the key uses they’re touting it for is to record events from overhead. Just think of all the great things you could soon see on Google Earth: the overhead of the crowd from a football game, the throngs of a marathon crossing a well known bridge, bulls running down drunken runners in Pamplona, the possibilities are endless!

Flying MICRO Helicopter Still Available

December 21st, 2006 by Al in Remote Control Toys

This is a more of an advertisement than a post but as the product is so cool I don’t mind, it’s the must have pocket size remote control Micro X-Copter. I might be a bit too late for Christmas but if I was offered one of these as a somewhat belated present or a woolly jumper on Christmas morning I know which I’d choose :).

Go Fly a Kite,, a Radio Controlled Kite!!!!

December 11th, 2006 by Fred in Childrens Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets, Remote Control Toys, Toys

Yes, of course there are a ton of remote control toys out there. How many of them are blended with kites? Well, so far I can clearly identify 1.

It’s the Radio Controlled Air Kite (ok, maybe they need to go to a special school where they come up with good names) but it looks like fun!

It’s from the folks over at Gadgetuniverse. They’ve even got some, ahem, special gifts for mommies and daddies.

Back to the issue at hand. There are a number of flying toys available for kids and adults alike. The biggest issue is, there are very few that are well designed for the younger set.

It seems this type of aircraft is different. It looks like it can run much slower, yet still retains all the fun and control of typical RC. The slower speeds and easy to use electric power system will be simpler and likely fit the reaction times for the younger set.

There is an L.E.D. light system ringing the edges of the vehicle. Now, you can fly at night!! That’s just not going to happen with darn near every other RC aircraft (unless of course you like to get out your night vision goggles while you play with your RC toys. This would tend to make me think you’ve got better toys and could probably afford a real plane, and well, I’m not talking to you!)

The fun really does seem to be the ability to fly this at dusk, and early evening. This is a great idea!

Constructicons Transform! (ok, really sweet RC Construction toys)

December 8th, 2006 by Fred in Childrens Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets, Remote Control Toys, Toys, Vehicle Gadgets

Ok, so I can’t prove an actual constructicons link here, but I do know that I’ve found a sweet repository of where to get actual Remote Control Construction toys!

Thanks to the folks over at HobbyTron! They’ve got them and they don’t cost a fortune!

Now why do you ask would I be so crazy about construction toys? Well, my best bud from the age of 5 is an absolute tractor nut! So much so that his current job is fitting GPS systems to them so that they can drive a straight line within 1″ for over a mile!!! Keep in mind that’s a tractor that likely costs as much as your house!
That’s beside the point. What we’re looking at here is a crane truck, that, get this costs just 78.97$US!!! What you say, “surely it doesn’t have many functions”.

First, don’t call me Shirley.

Second, this particular unit has 11 functions all handled by the remote control. Yeah one of those functions is simply the lights. Then again others are,, Crane swivel (360 degrees), Stabilizers, Hook Line, and more. Plus the stardard two channel forward and backwards with steering of course. Now granted, I’m sure this isn’t going to be the best race vehicle in the world, then again who wouldn’t want to see a crane truck race with 10 of these buggers! Of course there are the logisitics of hoping that they make these on different channels (unlikely at best). Well it was worth dreaming.
