Low-end MacBooks bested by their predecessors

March 5th, 2008 by Chris in Apple News, Tech News

MacBook

If you’ve recently purchased a new low-end MacBook, I don’t advise reading this, as it may upset you slightly. I used to be a big Mac fanatic (and have slowly been drifting back that direction) so I remember when the G5s came out and everyone raised a big stink about the lack of an L3 cache. While the newer chips still outperformed their predecessors, the absence of the L3 cache still gave the G4s an edge under certain circumstances. If you haven’t caught on, I’m trying to tell you that last year’s entry MacBook actually outperforms the ones currently on the market.

AMD switches to 45nm process for new CPUs

March 5th, 2008 by Chris in Electronic Gadgets, PC Gadgets, Tech News

AMD 45nm

I must say that AMD has disappointed me over the last year or two. I used to be an AMD guy, and most of the computers in the house still run some form of Athlon chips. However, my main gaming PC and notebook both run on Intel CPUs. It seems like at every turn AMD is just playing catch-up. Did I mention that they’ve announced that they’re getting ready to switch over to a 45nm process for their new chips?

March 3rd, 2008 by Chris in Electronic Gadgets, Tech News

Atom

The trend in computing technology has moved away from raw power in the last couple of years to focus more on power consumption. Microsoft announces price drop for Vista

March 2nd, 2008 by Chris in PC Gadgets, Software, Tech News

Vista

Windows Vista has been out for over a year now, and yet many people are still hesitant to upgrade, and frankly, I don’t blame them. I have one machine that runs Vista, and that’s only because it came installed on my laptop. For many reasons I’m just not ready to upgrade the other half-dozen machines in my house, one of which is that I don’t want to shell out all of the extra dough when XP is doing just fine. Apparently there are plenty of others thinking the same way, and thankfully Microsoft has been listening. They have announced that later this month they will be cutting prices on their latest versions of Windows.

Boost of cellphone sales on 2007

According to a recently published research made by Gartner, during 2007 there were more than one billion cellphones sold in the entire world. A pretty high number, which equals to a raise of 16% when compared to the previous year of 2006.

One of the main reasons for the number of cellphones purchased, is related to population in “developing countries“ that got their first mobile phone.

February 28th, 2008 by Al in Tech News

Virgin Galactic

We’ve written about Virgin Galactic before and it does sound sound jolly cool to be able to fly up to space and experience zero gravity, however it comes at something of a price, £100,000 (~$200,000 or near as damn it), ouch. However we’ve received an email from Virgin telling us that you can now put your Virgin air miles towards the cost of the flight, cool!

Virgin Galactic is delighted to announce a new destination…space. Climb to 360,000ft. at a cruising speed of almost three times the speed of sound, in unprecedented levels of safety and comfort. See our beautiful planet from 63 miles up and experience the magic of weightlessness.

Redeem 200,000 miles to receive 10% off the cost of a spaceflight, that’s an incredible $20,000 saving! Join our future astronauts and book your place in history

So if you travel a lot and have a spare £80K knocking there is a bargain to be had and if you want to get up to 3,000 bonus air miles leave a comment here and we’ll email you with more details (well Virgin will on our behalf).
