Apartment sized solar cells could be a boom in the inner city

March 13th, 2009 by James in Eco Gadgets, Home Gadgets, Solar Powered Gear

The advantage that houses in suburbia have over apartments in the City is that homeowners can install solar panels on their rooftops to save money on the every rising cost of electricity. Some can even take surplus energy produced by their solar panels and sell it back to the electric company at a tidy little profit. Most apartment dwellers don’t have that option as they don’t have a rooftop with which to install panels. But if they’re on the sunny side of the street, they may be able to install a new awning like product to do the same job.

Solar Underground Pest Deterrent

March 2nd, 2009 by Edwin in Eco Gadgets, Garden Gadgets, Home Gadgets, Solar Powered Gear

You never know just what kind of underground pests you’re going to run into, so why not stay safe rather than sorry? The Solar Underground Pest Deterrent device won’t harm the environment in any way, and it won’t add to your monthly electricity bill since it comes with a built-in solar panel. Powered by the sun, it will help help drive away underground pests including moles, voles, and gophers.

The weatherproof anodized aluminum spike stakes into the ground, where it emits sonic vibrations every 30 seconds that irritate burrowing pests and compel them to disperse. The deterrent operates within a diameter of 94 1/2′, and the 4″ sq. solar panel charges an integrated battery during the day, even in low light and overcast conditions, so it operates both day and night. The panel fully charges within three hours in full sunlight conditions and will operate for up to eight hours on a full charge.

Nice to know that it comes with a replaceable rechargeable battery pack, all for $59.95 a pop. If dad’s an avid gardener and have been complaining about underground pests, why not get this for him?

February 9th, 2009 by Edwin in Eco Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Solar Powered Gear

The Sanyo Eneloop range is always famous for its long-lasting battery life, and here we have with another Eneloop device known as the Sanyo Eneloop Solar Light. As you can tell by its name, it receives its power from the sun, outputting lights in arranged LEDs for rooms/emergencies by functioning as a flashlight. In addition, the USB port works great to juice up all your other phones and gizmos that rely on USB connectivity without letting you waste a single cent on disposable batteries as long as you rely on clean solar energy. Depending on the amount of lights used, this will release around 9 to 50 hours of light from a full tank.

That’s not a problem with the Solar Powered Orangutan, although it does look like a carved out piece of Lego from certain angles. All you need to do is set this Orangutan on a piece of string, expose it to some light and voila – it will get to work, climbing up to the very pinnacle according to its ability. You will need some assembly with this toy though, and it will take you approximately 20 minutes to complete the whole setup. The only tool you need? A simple screwdriver. $14.99 is the asking price for this piece of mindless fun.

Toyota’s Solar-powered Car

January 5th, 2009 by Mark R in Automotive Gadgets, Conceptual Gadgets, Eco Gadgets, Solar Powered Gear

About six months ago, we reported that Toyota was planning on putting solar panels on the Prius to power the air-conditioner. It has been recently been released that the famed Japanese motor company plans to release a car that is completely solar-powered.

As you can see on the photo, the solar panels are on the roof like solar panels of a house. This is only one way the car gets its power, as the company wants to supplement power by somehow attaching the car to the solar panels on the roofs of homes. This way, a car can be powered in a garage or parked outside.
