Texas Instruments announces brand new nHD chipset

Does it seem to you that the world of pico projectors have remained largely stagnant in terms of technological advancement? We think so in some ways, but it is nice to know that companies have not ditched this niche market just yet – with Texas Instruments coming up with their latest nHD chipset as an addition to the DLP Pico suite. Just what can nHD deliver? For starters, it will enable the thinnest, smallest DLP Pico engines to date, where nHD production availability is tipped to commence from the second quarter of this year onwards, further expanding DLP’s commitment to achieving world-class performance while enabling projector technology to be embedded into smaller devices in a wider range of product categories.

AAXA L1 laser pico projector

Pico projectors haven’t really taken off in the past couple of years despite the rather early promise it has, but that’s to be expected since most places already have the facilities to accommodate a nice presentation on a large, projected display, so why go mobile? Perhaps things might change in the future, but the pico projector market has taken small strides with the latest release from AAXA with their L1 laser pico projector. This laser-driven LCoS projector boasts 20 lumens of brightness at a resolution of 800 x 600, where it can throw up to a 50″ image thanks to its integrated media player. Still, all that technology is crammed into something as small as 4.2″ x 2.1″ x 0.8″ while tipping the scales at a mere 170 grams with the battery included! Being reliant on lasers, it is capable of projecting on curved surfaces and is focus-free. For $599, the L1 laser pico projector can run for 90 minutes before it requires a recharge – not too shabby, eh?

Light Touch takes virtual interfaces to a colorful level

Light Touch uses a laser driven, interactive holographic display
Man, it seems like years ago that a small company in Israel introduced us to a light projected keyboard interface. If you remember it, it displayed a red keyboard template and the projector was able to determine what key the user was pressing and translate it to text on a screen. This enabled the user to completely get rid of a physical QWERTY keyboard and provide extra space on the desk (which I could use considering I’m using two keyboards at the moment). But Light Blue Optics is taking it to a whole new level with Light Touch, a complete keyboard and display interface which brings computing to just about any surface.

Both projectors are portable units that aim to address the needs of educational facilities and corporate applications which require a short throw distance, be it in classrooms or conference rooms. As with many other gizmos these days, green is the keyword, and the wide-format NP510WS and standard-aspect NP610S will include a range of eco-friendly features which will prolong the projector’s lifespan, helping your organization save both money and energy simultaneously. Now how about that for killing two birds with one stone?

Mobile Cinema DVD Projector

A DVD projector is rarely something you’d think of as kid friendly. However, owning one gives kids that movie theater feel within the home. Hopefully cutting back on costs in the long run and making them more likely to be ok just having friends over to watch movies at home instead of going to the theater. Well this projector is meant for portability and is brightly colored enough to look great in any kid’s room.

Opus Laser projector car application
Opus’ very own Laser pico projector is not something new to the market, but the company has found a way to inject a new lease of life by turning it into a part of a heads-up display in a vehicle. The 10 ANSI lumens brightness and VGA resolution might not amount to much when it comes to watching movies on the go, but it ought to be good enough when it comes to projecting the car’s speed, direction and even GPS coordinates on a specialized piece of car window that has been covered with a special film on it. No word on when such a system will be out commercially, but if you can’t wait, there is always the BMW 5 Series to consider for a heads-up display.
