InFocus is a name that most people would associate with digital projection technology, and the company has just released a new range of digital projectors that will come with features which make them the ideal candidates for business and education markets. First of all, the IN3900 series will merge signature InFocus technologies for ease of use, full connectivity and superior image quality alongside LiteBoard. For the uninitiated (including myself), LiteBoard is an interactive solution that turns digitally projected content into a collaborative workspace.

Being the watershed device where LiteBoard-ready projectors are concerned, the IN3900 series will increase yet another level of interactivity to digital displays, enabling users to annotate, append and highlight projected content wirelessly via an optional LiteBoard Wand. Presenters also have the choice of projecting their file(s) of choice sans a PC as long as they have a USB flash drive stuck into an available USB port on the projector itself, accompanied by the InFocus LitePort. Capable of hitting a maximum brightness of 3,000 lumens, the IN3900 series will also feature native resolutions of up to WXGA, and DLP technology with the InFocus BrilliantColor enhancement to deliver vivid, true-to-life colors and industry-leading picture quality. Other features include embedded networking, RS232 control and a built-in web browser, allowing full projector management over any network.

Meant to be extremely flexible, the IN3900 series will boast a host of connectivity options that will include standard analog VGA and HDMI 1.3, wireless-ready support for InFocus LiteShow II for multiple users over a standard Wi-Fi connection and even InFocus DisplayLink Wireless for point-to-point connectivity over Ultra-wideband (UWB). This new series will come in the form of the InFocus IN3902 (XGA, 1024 X 768 resolution) and IN3904 (WXGA, 1280 X 800 resolution). Pricing details might vary from shop to shop, so do check with your local dealer if you’re interested in picking one up.

NEC does deal with a plethora of projectors, and to date they have built up quite an impressive portfolio of performers. This time round, the Japanese company is back with a new NP610 entry-level installation projector that was specially designed to target users who require incredible image quality with advanced capabilities without having to break the bank while not compromising on performance and features. More specifically, the NEC NP610 will target users at the university level, but the buck does not stop there since it will fare equally well in corporate environments, being the perfect companion for areas such as training rooms, lecture halls and conference rooms.

According to Rich McPherson, Product Manager for projectors at NEC Display Solutions, “The NP610 is an ideal entry-level installation projector that offers all the features our customers need to succeed in connecting with their audience. From increased brightness and color-enhancing technologies to environmentally-favorable specifications, this projector meets the standard criteria required for integration projectors.”

Some of the features available for the NP610 include :-

Brightness of 3500 lumens

Native resolution of 1024 x 768 XGA

Contrast ratio of 500:1

Low power consumption of 312W Normal/237W ECO Mode/0.6W Standby

Up to 5000 hours of lamp life (in ECO Mode)

Comprehensive input panel, which includes DVI-I with HDCP, 15-pin, RCA and S-Video

Built-in closed captioning, which enables decoding and text display from a video

Variable audio-out, where the remote control can be used to adjust the volume of self-powered external speakers that are connected to the projector

AutoSense, which intuitively syncs the projector with most computer signals and features one-touch image optimization

Automatic keystone correction technology, which instantly projects a square image even when the projector is set up at a steep offset angle to the screen

Built-in wall color correction preset, which provides adaptive color tone correction to display images properly on non-white surfaces

7-watt speaker

Expect the new NEC NP610 to ship sometime this month where it will retail for a pocket friendly $1,499. Each purchase will come with a standard two-year parts and labor warranty for added peach of mind.

Talk about projectors and some of the more notable names will probably pop up during tehe conversation, where we’re pretty sure that Epson is one of them as they are currently the number-one selling projector brand worldwide, and aims to leverage on that position by announcing the PowerLite Pro Z8000WUNL projector that has already started shipping to Pro AV dealers. This is no ordinary projectors, since it will boast a high-bright, WUXGA projector that comes in 1,920 x 1,200 native resolution while being accompanied by a super high price tag of $20,499, placing it well out of reach for ordinary home owners (save for the select few who are insanely rich or have just struck the national lottery).

The Epson PowerLite Pro Z8000WUNL is touted to be the industry’s only 3LCD WUXGA projector, where it is capable of delivering outstanding image quality, powerful performance and unqualified value which will cater for auditorium venue applications. Meant to work for large venue applications in corporations, education, and houses of worship, the PowerLite Pro Z8000WUNL also holds the distinction of being Epson’s brightest projector to date, full well able to roll out 6,000 lumens color light output and 6,000 lumens white light output, accompanied by other specifications and features including 5,000:1 contrast ratio, an innovative liquid cooling system, durable optical chips and a dual-lamp design which will bring image quality, performance and reliability up another notch.

Some of the features that the projector comes with were meant to reduce the amount of time and money spent on maintenance, lowering the frequency as well. You get easy access to lamps and filters, where it ought to serve you flawlessly if you follow the recommended 10,000-hour filter cleaning schedule. Apart from that, the Z8000WUNL will also boast Epson’s high-aperture 3-chip 3LCD technology for clear and crisp images.

Sanyo is an old name when it comes to projectors, and this has seen the company roll out two more models for the masses – the PLC-XM150/150L and PLC-XM100/100L projectors, where they will be the company’s representative of the type with out-of-the-box functions and high-brightness/high-image-quality technologies which have seen Sanyo’s line of projectors make it all the way to the top of the industry. The PLC-XM150/150L has been touted to be the highest brightness projector in its “lesser” sibling, the PLC-XM100/100L (we use the term lesser here on a liberal basis), it will come with a brightness rating of 5000 lumens. Users of these new projectors will find an inorganic liquid crystal panel that has been incorporated into the newly developed optical engine while working in tandem with a superior cooling technology that enables both projectors to boast such high brightness levels.

Compared to other conventional models from Sanyo thenmselves, these will come with a light efficiency that is approximately 20% higher, making it possible for use in large venues and well-lit areas with a large screen need, turning it into a form of digital signage for the masses as well. You will find that both models will come with Sanyo’s very own Active Maintenance Filter (AMF) system for a higher degree of reliability and trouble-free maintenance. A single cartridge will come with 10 filter rolls that ought to last you for up to 10,000 hours thereabouts. Whenever the system detects air blocks or clogs, the filter reel will scroll to the next clean filter.

Users will find that there are five lens options available for the PLC-XM150/150L and PLC-XM100/100L, giving you the opportunity to select the best lens possible for the installation site at all times. This ensures that the projectors can be used in a wide variety of venue settings, ranging from medium to large conference rooms, classrooms, school auditoriums and lecture halls. Installation is painless and easy, while other functions available include advanced Power Vertical/Horizontal Lens Shifting and Power Zoom/Focus, Vertical 360-degree Tilt Angle, compatibility with Sanyo’s optional PJ-NET Organizer and Direct Power-off among others. Expect the PLC-XM150/150L to arrive this November for $4,795 sans lens, while the PLC-XM100/100L will come a month later, retailing for $3,895 without lens.

Canon has announced that it will expand its REALiS Multimedia LCOS Projector family by another two models, in the form of the WUX10 Mark II and SX80 Mark II. Both of these projectors will feature a new Photo Image Mode that makes room for advanced color management and adjustments for ambient lighting conditions, making them the ideal solution for professionals who want the most discerning image quality needs, and this select group will include those in the fields of photography, education, engineering and the arts and sciences.

Photo Image Mode will allow users to take advantage of added flexibility in order to improve the look and feel of images being projected. With the newly introduced Ambient Light function, users can adjust for lighting conditions in a jiffy simply by selecting from easy-to-use presets for both the type of lighting (Tungsten, Fluorescent and Fluorescent H) and intensity (Low, Medium or High). These options will automatically adjust the settings to ensure optimum color reproduction and image quality when selected. Apart from that, Photo Image Mode also makes room for fine-tuning of both color levels (intensity of colors) and color temperature, coming in easy-to-use presets.

The Canon REALiS WUX10 Mark II Multimedia Projector will come with WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) native resolution, 3,200 lumens of brightness and 16:10 widescreen aspect ratio. As for the Canon REALiS SX80 Mark II Multimedia Projector, this model will be of a slightly lower grade at SXGA+ (1,400 x 1,050) resolution, accompanied by multiple user-friendly features including PictBridge connectivity, 3,000 lumens of brightness, a wide selection of video and audio inputs/outputs (HDMI and DVI included) and advanced LCOS technology. You will find the REALiS WUX10 Mark II Multimedia Projector to be rather pricey though at $12,999 each, while those on a tighter budget can settle for the REALiS SX80 Mark II Multimedia that will retail at a much more affordable $3,999. Both projectors are tipped to arrive in the market sometime this month, where each of them will come with Canon USA’s Three-Year Limited Warranty and an exclusive Projector Protection Program.

Epson has rolled out yet another two native 1080p 3LCD home theater projectors for home theater buffs who want nothing but the very best for their personal entertainment needs. The two projectors in question are the PowerLite Pro Cinema 9100 and 9500 UB, where they will incorporate the latest 3LCD chips with D7 technology which are able to produce amazing color and detail alongside significantly higher contrast ratios. Just for starters, you would be interested to know that the Pro Cinema 9100 manages to hit a 36,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio while the Pro Cinema 9500 UB is able to attain an unprecedented 200,000:1 in its class. Boasting professional-level color tools such as ISF calibration and color isolation, both the Pro Cinema 9100 and 9500 UB are able to deliver full-featured solutions right smack in your living room.

The Epson Pro Cinema 9100 is by no means a slouch, where it offers a whole lot of bang for your hard-earned buck alongside a customizable home entertainment experience. It will feature ISF Day and Night modes that allows one to alternate between picture modes and lamp output for the best image quality possible regardless of the conditions. Epson’s Color Isolation system also works great for fine-tuning of color saturation and hue, doing away with the need for blue and red optical filters. Other specifications include a brightness level of 1,800 lumens color and white light output. It will come in a stylish black and silver chassis, where the integrated exclusive Dynamic Iris system will provide vast leaps in contrast improvement, placing it perfectly for fast-action movies with frequent scene changes.

As for the flagship Epson Pro Cinema 9500 UB, this model offers custom installers the ultimate in image quality by bringing together Epson’s C2Fine and UltraBlack technology alongside 3LCD and D7 technology in order to roll out real black levels and vivid images that are a feast to your eyes. A dual-layered auto iris helps control light reduction rates even more effectively, allowing it to achieve the aforementioned contrast ratio of up to 200,000:1. Other specifications include a brightness of 1,600 lumens color and white light output, Epson’s FineFrame technology for smoother frame interpolation, the new Super-resolution technology that sharpens blurry images or low-resolution pictures and 12-bit 3LCD driver technology with an integrated Silicon Optix HQV Reon-VX video processor and PW390 scaler for extraordinarily smooth pictures.

The Epson Pro Cinema 9100 and Epson Pro Cinema 9500 UB will retail for $2,599 and sub-$4,000, respectively, when they’re available.

Mention ViewSonic and most of the time you would probably think about LCD monitors, but this time round they have released two devices for the masses – the smallest DLP projector from the company to date known as the PJD2121, while the WPG-350 wireless presentation gateway offers a solution for meeting rooms that won’t break the company budget. These devices are able to offer decent performance and capabilities despite their small size, making them suitable for those who do not want to be limited by projection technology in their line of work.

Let’s take a look at the Viewsonic PJD2121 first – the smallest short throw DLP pico projector from the company that tips the scales at just 2.2 pounds. This advanced device will come with integrated BrillantColor technology that is able to deliver 400 lumens of brightness, where your images are thrown at 800 x 600 SVGA native resolution, easily placing it as one of the brightest projectors available in its class. Contrast ratio for a pico projector is also pretty respectable at 1,800:1, where this combination ought to be enough to handle situations in virtually any lighting environment. It comes with a short 1:1 throw ratio that makes it perfect for tabletop personal use or for small meeting rooms, and can display images of up to 60″ from as near as just four feet away. The ‘Off to Go’ function also enables one to power the PDJ2121 automatically without having to worry about the lamp overheating due to insufficient cooling time. This filter-less design offers easy maintenance and a lower total cost of ownership, while it comes with a Kensington security lock port for added peace of mind. Each $449 purchase comes with a three-year limited parts and labor warranty, although the lamp stands at just one year.

As for the WPG-350 wireless presentation gateway, this device offers wireless capability to any compatible projector, LCD TV or large screen display without having the need to fork out a large amount of money for an embedded wireless projector. It is able to support 1,024 x 768 resolution and full-motion video up to 1080p, featuring 802.11b/g/n hi-speed wireless connectivity. Interested parties can pick up the WPG-350 wireless presentation gateway for $199.

As you can see, there is a holographic head in a box there, very reminiscent of Laddy the genie from Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. Unlike Laddy, the person can view the floating head in three-dimensions. What you don’t see is what is happening to the “head-guy” on the other side.

The head uses special cameras to get the information on the profile, and the project it onto a spinning mirror. Most holograms use lasers, but this uses a rotating mirror so that multiple images can be seen. There is a video of this here if you want to see a better demonstration.

As the video shows, the image of the hologram looks a little sketchy, sort of like the hologram of Sir Lawrence Olivier in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

I don’t really see this technology as something that would be in every household or business, but I suppose this would be a terrific attraction at some sort of amusement park. However, if it gets cheaper, and if the hologram looks better, we could finally be the holographic society from our science-fiction movies.

It’s cool enough to have holograms, but what if you could actually touch them? This was a project that some researchers at the University of Tokyo took on, and have achieved some interesting results.

You can watch a video of what they have done after the jump, but here is a quick summary. First, they used two Wiimotes (yes, Wiimotes) to track a holographic object in realtime and space. So when that hand that you see in the picture tries to dribble that tiny ball, it responds like a real superball would.

Ultrasounds are then given so the hand can actually “feel” the impact. Experiements have shown that the ultrasounds can disrupt things from a distance, and if focused properly, they can create a sense of touch. At the end of the video is that hand underneath some raindrops, and it can apparently “feel” them.

This is definitely one of those “this could change everything” technologies, but it is still in its fetal stage. In other words, don’t be dreaming about having your own holodeck from Star Trek TNG anytime soon. By the way, I believe that technology used energy and matter conversion.

Man, I am such a geek sometimes. I’ll prove it yet again by saying that this technology reminds me of a short-lived show called Automan. It was about a guy who created a holographic man who others could actually feel. He even had an Autocar and Autoplane which were also tangible holograms.

Yeah, we are a long way holograms that we can feel. I suppose if they had this touch holograms in Star Wars, then Luke Skywalker could have felt Princess Leia saying “help me Obi-Wan Kenobi”.

Oh, that is so wrong.

I’ve covered mini-projectors several times on this blog, greatly anticipating the day when every consumer has one. Yesterday, a landmark was made as Nikon announced that its Coolpix S1000pj will include a miniature LED projector.

This 12.1 megapixel camera comes with a 2.7 inch LCD viewscreen, a 5x wide-angle NiKKOR lens, and can capture HD video at 1280 x 720 pixels. Oh, by the way, Nikon also put out three other cameras, but who really cares about that, let’s talk about the projector on the S1000pj!

All the user needs is a flat surface and he or she can beam their images to a 40-inch size. The user can also mix music, and create effects along with transitions for these pictures.

So, is this the beginning of a new age of photography? In all honesty, I kind of hope not. After all, we already live in an age where people who want to share their photos can just put them on their iPod, or just show them on the digital camera itself. I mean, you could practically show a picture of you sharing your pictures.

Does anyone want to be the annoying guy or girl who just “has to” show his or her photos to everyone? Now that person is going to have a captive audience as they projecting their pics on any flatscreen nearby. My advice: have an excuse ready to leave the room.

Of course, current miniature projector technology has always been somewhat weak at best. I’m guessing that the S1000pj will seem antique within a few years. You should think before you purchase one, as it will set you back about $430.

NEC Display Solutions of America is back with a brand new projector, although this time round they won’t be offering one that will target home theater systems. Instead, the latest addition to the family would be the NEC NP4100 professional installation projector, and by its name itself you can tell that it is able to handle even the most demanding integration projects. This powerful NP Installation Series model will cater to those who want to have a projector work in large venues, boasting exceptionally bright light output that is more than capable of handling huge areas despite of high ambient light.

The NEC NP4100 comes with a high level of brightness rated at 6,200 ANSI lumens, which is more than enough when it comes to larger than average screen sizes as well as rooms with minimal lighting control including auditoriums, training and network centers. This high level of brightness results in enhanced clarity when projected onto the screen, and it will go some way in helping audience viewing be less strained, especially for those who are suffering from less than perfect eyesight.

Some of the features available on the NP4100 include :-

1024 x 768 native resolution

2100:1 contrast ratio

6200 ANSI lumen brightness

Power consumption of 315W with single lamp, 580W with dual lamp in ECO Mode

BrilliantColor – increases system brightness and color saturation while optimizing color gain across the full color gamut

AutoSense – automatically syncs with any computer signal and features one-touch image optimization

DynamicBlack – improves the black level of video for further detail in dark scenes

4- and 6-segment color wheels for maximum brightness and appropriate color reproduction

DVI-D with HDCP, RCA, s-video, component, 15-pin and BNC connectivity

Integrated RJ45 connection, which enables quick and easy LAN connection

Remote diagnostics – enables the administrator to monitor and make adjustments to the projector via the network from a remote location

Variety of bayonet-style lenses for greater flexibility

Expect to pick up the NEC NP4100 sometime this August for $5,499. All purchases will come with a standard three-year parts and labor warranty.

I’m also sure that many of you are aware of the Pico Projectors designed to project video files form mobile devices.

Welcome to the new age of the Cinemin Swivel, a mini-projector with 480 x 360 resolution, a three-hour battery life, and an adjustable 90-degree hinge.

It is designed to work with the iPhone, iPods, and other mobile devices, as well as laptops. Once it is connected, it projects what the user wants, wherever the user wants. My source does not say how big the projection is.

I’m not certain how good the sound is, as it has a tiny speaker, and I’m not certain who wants a tiny projector. I suppose it might be nice to project my favorite DVD on a screen and pretend that I am watching it in a walk-in theater, but it isn’t really my dream to project my films wherever I want. I mean, if I was on the bus, does anyone else want to see my vids but me?

The Cinemin Swivel is available for pre-order in U.S. and Europe for about $349.99.

Pocket projectors are all the rage now, the ability to use a projector the size of an iPod to display information on a wall is a godsend for the business set, who look to expand the ability to make presentations without having to travel with expensive projectors or having to customize their presentations to what equipment is available. But while getting more popular, projectors like the PICO and the Mili Pro – which can connect to an iPhone or iPod Touch – are still in their infancy.

At it’s current state of technology, the MiLi Pro can project a 640×480 resolution image up to about 30 inches away before the lumens simply dissipate from distance. So, while it won’t project in very large meeting places, it can work for small, intimate gatherings where the presentation can be seen on a 40″ screen area.

The Pro, which has a dock for the iPod Touch/iPhone also comes with VGA and RCA connectors which enable it to work with larger LCD screens directly. And it’s own adjustable stand makes for easy tweaking to get the image just right on screen. Charges in about three hours and comes with integrated speakers as well.

But don’t forget you’re only talking about a resolution just about VHS quality, so don’t expect to be watching HD video with it.

Epson does not only dabble in projectors as well as a range of other consumer electronics, but they have recently introduced yet another device that ought to help the school system get its lessons across to students in a more effective method. The device in question would be the Epson AP-60 Sound Enhancement System that is touted to be “a first of its kind”, offering a “complete and fully-integrated K-12 classroom sound solution designed to engage students in active learning.” What does active learning consist of? Well, for starters, the Epson AP-60 functions as a revolutionary speaker system that was specially developed for the classroom, and is capable of delivering 360 degrees of sound. It doesn’t matter if you’re constructing a new school or retrofitting the installation with a ceiling mounted projector, the Epson AP-60 will fit in nicely. A high-quality infrared pendant microphone meant for teachers and students alike helps enhance vocal clarity and intelligibility in addition to amplifying from numerous classroom audio sources.

According to Heather Litus Johnston, product manager, K-12 Education Marketing, Epson America, Inc., “Many studies have revealed that when teachers are more clearly heard, the level of student engagement grows and lessons are more likely to be effective. The Epson AP-60 amplifies and projects teachers’ voices in order to make their speech more understandable to students, while decreasing the strain on teachers. Our sound system is also designed to be unobtrusive to the teacher while providing quality audio that can be heard clearly in all parts of the classroom.”

We’re pretty sure that parents would love to have something like this in their homes as kids these days don’t seem to hear when listening, or is it listening when hearing? Either way, communications is vital and it is hoped that this advancement by Epson will be able to help students do their best in the classroom.

Epson is no stranger when it comes to the world of projectors, as they are currently the number-one selling projector brand worldwide. This time round, they’re offering a trio of new models from its fabled PowerLite line of multimedia projectors, targeting the education market in the process. The three projectors would be the PowerLite S7, 79 and W7, and all of them were specially designed to offer outstanding image quality, connectivity, easy to use features, and affordability, letting schools give the best to students without breaking their annual budget in the process. Despite keeping the price relatively low, it also comes with features that are normally not found in entry-level offerings, including USB Plug ‘n Play, audio output, closed captioning, and extended lamp life up to 4,000 hours.

First off, the Epson PowerLite S7 will come with 2,300 lumens color light output and 2,300 lumens white light output alongside SVGA (800 x 600) resolution. As for the PowerLite 79 and W7, you get 2,200 lumens color light output and 2,200 lumens white light output while the PowerLite 79 is come with XGA resolution. Last but not least is the PowerLite W7 that is equipped with WXGA resolution (16:10 aspect ratio) and is fully compatible with widescreen notebooks. All of these projectors won’t break your back whenever you carry them around for conferences as they tip the scales at just 5.1 pounds, making them roughly which 30% smaller than their predecessors.

So, if you happen to run an education institution or just want to purchase a new projector for personal use, how much damage will these do to your bottomline? The Epson PowerLite S7, 79 and W7 will retail for $549, $649 and $749, respectively as they are released later this October 2009 through a variety of channels. All purchases will come with a 2-year limited warranty for added peace of mind.

Sanyo is no stranger when it comes to projectors, regardless of whether they are of the LCD or DLP variety. This time round, they will be unleashing two more portable projectors to the market – the PLC-XW250 and the PLC-XW200, where these two models will target the education field without breaking the annual budget, boasting outstanding cost performance with an eco stand-by power mode that sips just 0.4 watts of juice. Coupled with their very own “Easy Setup Function”, getting one of these up and running even by a newbie should be a snap.

Their power consumption of 0.4 watts places both the PLC-XW250 and the PLC-XW200 under the category of “most ecological data projector” from Sanyo’s stable. When the eco power stand-by mode kicks in, it helps you save approximately 80% of the energy that is consumed by similar previous Sanyo projectors. This is made possible by a redesign of electrical circuits, fully complying with the EuP-Directive Lot 6 and the EU RoHS Directive. Not only that, the packaging that both of these projectors come in are also environmentally friendly, being made out of pulp molds that can later be recycled as used paper.

What’s so great about the “Easy Setup Function”, you ask? Well, it includes Auto Input Signal Search, Auto Vertical Keystone Correction and an Input Guidance Function. Firstly, the Auto Input Signal Search will be able to detect the input signal automatically and make the relevant changes to internal settings. Secondly, the Auto Vertical Keystone Correction function will be able to automatically detect its position angle and make corrections for any image distortion. Last but not least would be the Guidance Function that shows on-screen connection instructions whenever there isn’t any input signal detected. Sanyo will be rolling out the PLC-XW250 and the PLC-XW200 later this month, retailing for $895 and $795, respectively.
