Mustek DV300T Portable Video Camera

February 1st, 2008 by Mark R in Photography

Mustek DV300T

We have reported on portable camcorders from Mustek one year ago, but the DV300T is one of the most unique designs of any recorder out on the market today.

This camera definitely has the YouTube generation in mind as it has a VGA CMOS sensor for filming sub-NTSC or PAL type video.

As for still shots, it can do about 3.1 Megapixels which is “Interpolated Resolution by Security Standard VGA Sensor”. I’m not certain exactly what that means, but it sounds like it means that there is some sort of digital image stabilization happening here.

That sounds hard to believe, considering the device only has 64 MB worth of memory. However, that is expandable with SD cards.

I’m not certain why Mustek calls this product a 6-in-1 Multi-Functional Video Camera, but there are some other non-camera features included in the DV300T like voice recording, MP3 capability, and eBook reading.

Flying Stick Cam – aerial surveillance … er photography for everyone

January 24th, 2008 by James in Remote Control Toys, Toys, Photography, Wacky Gadgets

Flying Stick Camera

Everyone either made a whirlybird out of paper or had a wood/plastic toy version when they were a kid. The concept was pretty simple. Rub the stick body of the whirlybird between one’s hands and toss it up into the air (the paper version was merely dropped from on high). Using auto-rotation, the whirlybird would land under its own control anywhere from a few feet to several yards away. It was a fun toy for the helicopter pilot in all of us. Now, (thanks to our friends at Yankoo Design) one designer has taken that whirlybird concept and created a camera platform out of it.

New Geo Tagger makes picture taking a lot easier

January 19th, 2008 by James in GPS gadgets, Photography

Photo Finder

A few months ago, we highlighted the coolness that is the Gisteq Photo Trackr, a pocket pocket sized GPSs device that allowed photographers to geo tag their pictures and plot them on any google map or flickr mashup. And although this device is awesome for hard core shutterbugs travelling the world on $40 dollars a day, users still had to synch the pictures up with software on a PC. The next step is here with the ATP Electronics GPS Photo Finder that bypasses all that.

WYWH.mobi Gives You Postcards from the Cell Phone

January 15th, 2008 by Mark R in CES 2008, Coolest Mobile News, Photography, Mobile Phones

WYWH

The picture to the left is simply a scan of a postcard that I received in the mail, and there are several things that make this picture special.

The first thing is that it depicts a handsome blogger who visited CES 2008 in Las Vegas, and is holding up a genuine Las Vegas napkin as “proof that I was here”.

The second thing is that the postcard is made from a picture from a cell phone. However, there was no work downloading the picture to a PC, or taking the time to print it out with a caption. All that it took was sending the picture from a cell phone to WYWH.mobi, and then the postcard was printed elsewhere and sent to its destination.

Digital Frame prints copies while playing a happy tune

January 10th, 2008 by James in CES 2008, Photography

Digital Frame and Printer

How many times have you had a family member over for dinner and they’ve looked at your framed photographs and quipped that they’d love a copy. You promise to have one made but life being as it is, you never seem to get around to pulling the picture out of the frame, driving down to the 1 hour photo to get a copy, and then drop it in the mail. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could just press a button and spit one out? That’s the cool promise of the Prinics’ Digital Photo Frame.

Manfrotto ModoSteady camcorder stabiliser

January 7th, 2008 by Marc in CES 2008, Photography

IMG_0475--Web Manfrotto are known for high quality camera tripod system. This year they’re launching the "ModoSteady" video camera stabiliser system at CES. It’s basically a comfortable grip with a counterweight that hangs down under the camera to give it some stability. It really does make a surprising difference - as camcorders get smaller, they get harder to hold steady and even with stabilisation built in to the camera you can still get shaky images.

With the grip attached to the camera even this inexperienced user was able to make steady, slow panning shots and hold the camera still.

The mount also converts to a "shoulder pad / pistol grip" style of grip, which some people find a more comfortable way of doing the same thing. It has the usual array of adjustments you’d expect from manfrotto gear and is available soon from your favourite camera store.
