Second Rotation gives a new life to old tech

by James

Second Rotation

Rousseau Aurelien wants your old gadgets and he’s willing to pay for them. That’s the basic idea behind his new online venture called Second Rotation. Users with outdated or simply unused gadgetry, such as digital cameras, camcorders and MP3 Players can sell them to a middle man, rather than deal with the fees and hassles that comes with the 800 pound online gorilla known as eBay.

360 degree lens: surround photography and projection?

by Andi

panorama cameraThe Olympus Corporation of Japan has developed a new camera lens, and a very special one at that. Besides a 360 degree panoramic view, it also offers 45 degrees of vertical visibility.

This way, you get an almost complete coverage of the surrounding area.

They’ve achieved that by creating a free-curved design that is also axially symmetrical. This way, the incoming light is reflected and refracted into a perfect panorama of the surroundings.

This way, a single lens and image source can be used to project an image or animation on more than half of a room’s surface.

Canon Announces New Printers for Photo printing and more

by James

Canon MP740

Canon has announced new printers which promise greater resolution and performance as the electronics giant continues to focus on photo printing options for it’s users. The printers include two additions to it’s Pixma Line and a stand alone Photoprinter. The Pixma MP470 and MP210 are all in one printers which cost $100 and $80 respectively. They have an output of 4800 x 1200 dpi, can scan images at 2400 x 4800 dpi, and use a standard USB 2.0 connection.

Also featured is a 1.8″ color LCD (MP470 only), a built-in memory card reader and PictBridge port – which we’ve come to expect in most Canon printers. This means that users can print photos while bypassing a PC connection. In addition, the PictBridge port supports an optional Bluetooth adapter for wireless printing.

The cheapest 5.0 megapixel cameraphone?

by Andi

ct-6618 front small
Browsing the sites of Brando Workshop I stumbled across the ‘CT-6618′. It’s a pretty standard Chinese-Touchscreen-Phone, but it has some notable exceptions.

Even if it’s priced high compared to the other anonymous Chinese phones, compared to known brands it’s very, VERY cheap. However, if it’s reliable enough to last for 6 months, it would definitely be worth its money, given its features.

Read on for the low-down:

Digitizing Slides and Negatives

by Al

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture ConverterI’ve owned a digital camera for years and can’t remember the last time I had to send off to get a film developed. That being said, I’ve still got a cupboard full of photographs and negatives. The “Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter” gadget, could let me remove all evidence of previously owning a film based camera.

The slide and negative digitizer can be used to scan in 35mm slides and film negatives, which it then converts to a normal digital photo. It scans at a resolution of 1829 DPI with a 10 bit color depth, so the images should be pretty sharp. Once you’ve scanned in all your old images you should have a spare draw to keep your ever increasing collection of memory cards in.

You can get the slide and negative digitizer (for want of a better name) from Hammacher for $99.95.

Don’t like the Camcorders on the Market? Make your Own!

by James

DIY Camcorder
When Dan Vance was making his 90 minute sci-fi feature “The Shivering Earth,” he couldn’t afford to use film or rent high def video cameras, he wasn’t satisfied with the quality of camcorders on the consumer market, and he couldn’t wait for the Red One to be made available for the masses.

So he did what any red blooded, enterprising film director would do … he designed and built his own video camera! Sure, it looks like a camera from the late 80s, but inside, it’s mechanics represent cutting edge video capture technology with tapeless recording via hard drive.

Is this laptop concept the future mobile computing?

by James

Traveller Laptop Concept

The Traveller laptop concept by Nikita Golovlev may just represent a quantum leap of what may be possible in mobile computing thanks to ePaper, the flexible plastic display under development which is downright miserly on power consumption and can provide motion graphics that are as clear as their LCD counterparts. At least in theory.
