The Christmas season is coming up and nothing says Merry Christmas like a creepy novelty USB gadget. If you know someone that’s still a huge fan of Alien, this creepy little guy may be pointless, but at least he’s cool. He does actually do a few tricks after he’s plugged into your computer, but he doesn’t actually store any of your data.

The miniature alien plugs into your USB port, not to transfer data, but to make it look even more spooky. As soon as it’s plugged in through the tail, the mouth pops open and spits out the creepy alien tongue. The mouth also lights up to a nice bright red. Then after it’s plugged in, it will just at random do the same process all over again. At the very least it’ll keep you on your toes. Once it’s released early to mid December it’ll cost you 3,990 JPY or about $44 through Strapya World.

Imation has always been at the forefront of things where storage medium is concerned, and their latest release is yet another first (and possibly another feather in the company’s cap) – the Pro WX wireless USB hard drive. Based on Imation’s platform of external hard drives, the Imation Pro WX drive – despite not being tethered to your computer, will still be able to offer the convenience of fast data transfer rates, speed and capacity required in today’s graphics and data intensive environments, maxing out at 1.5TB of storage space. Great news for everyone, but we can’t wait for the next generation device already which should be in the works to go along with the USB 3.0 when it rolls out.

The Imation Pro WX Wireless USB hard drive brings together a combination of speed, capacity and security in a convenient 3.5″ form factor, capable of hitting a Wireless USB data transfer rate of up to 15MBs/second at best – this translates to backing up a standard CD within 50 seconds. Apart from that, the Pro WX wireless hard drive also exhibits an innovative one-to-one connection which limits the possibility of signal interception while giving you a peace of mind as one can back up data securely within a 30 foot radius in a manner that is not too different from that of a direct attached storage device.

Each purchase of the Imation Pro WX Wireless USB hard drive comes with an integrated stand that allows you to place it in either a vertical or horizontal position. Apart from that, you can tell at a glance just how much storage space it has left within thanks to a low capacity/data activity indicator lights that makes it easy to identify data processes. Built-in sleep mode is thrown into the mix for energy conservation, while one-touch, backup sync buttons virtually makes it dummy-proof for one to backup the drive’s contents automatically. Compatible with both Mac and PC platforms, the Imation Pro WX wireless USB hard drive will retail for $449.99.

I’m all about gadgets that are made to look old but still have that new technology we all know and love. Yet the USB gadgets made to look like older ones just seem a bit like cheap impostors. However, if you don’t want to pay the price for an expensive antique that runs just like the old ones always have, these would work out great. Especially since they’re plenty affordable.

These hurricane lamps are made out of plastic and stand 4” tall. The light within the lamp can change colors, it flips between a total of 7 different colors. The light uses LED bulbs, so it won’t require too much power to keep it going. It of course just requires you to plug it into your USB port to keep it up and running. You can purchase the Color Change Hurricane Lamp $9.69 from UX Sight.

I’ve always known that Disney was capable of slapping their brand name on just about anything. I just never really expected to see Disney themed USB cables. However, they’ve officially done it and in a way that doesn’t look too bad. Thankfully they also don’t jack up the price to a horrible amount either, making them parent friendly as well as great for the kids.

On the cable itself there isn’t a whole lot that really broadcasts them as being a Disney product. Each one of the versions of the cable has a bright color and an indention on the end. One shows Mickey, another is Stitch, and then there’s the Cars version, Toy Story, and the Princess one. The cable is about 70cm long. You can purchase each one of these for $7 a piece through Brando. They’d make for an affordable stocking stuffer for this Christmas.

If you’re ever in the situation where you need your speakers to play to a full room of people, something with a 360° design like this one could make things easier. It’s not the most powerful speaker out there, but if you need to use it for a quick presentation, it would be handy. You could also use it for music when you need something extra to listen to with a group of friends.

The device uses a tumbler design that’s supposed to be based on cutting edge technology that was created for the USA Navy. It comes only in the black with the metallic accents and includes a USB cable. That cable is the source of the speaker’s power. The speaker is said to have “excellent sound and bass 360 omni-directional sound”. Then again, who actually says that their speaker has ok sound qaulity? You can purchase the speaker for the very affordable $24.79 through Amazon.

In all honesty, I do like the film, but not enough to purchase the Disney/Pixar Cars USB Email Alert.

Brought to you by our old friends at Brando, it is a device modeled after one of the Cars stars. You can choose from Lightning McQueen, The King, Doc Hudson, Chick Hicks, or Mater. Its purpose is to give you email alerts every time you receive an email message, and it does so using a twinkle effect on the front window and an authentic sound from the film. It is compatible with Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook Express, and POP3, and no batteries are required. All the user has to do is plug it into a spare USB port, and it needs no CD-ROM.

In addition to the email notifications, the device also has another feature. The car will interact with the typing detected on the keyboard. “It will sound, together with different facial expression of the Cars”. That’s all I know so far. I’m guessing that Lightning McQueen would probably say “Ka-Chow” every time you hit the Enter key. Whatever this feature is, I hope that is as entertaining to me as the Disney/Pixar movie is to my children.

My cell phone has a micro SD, my camera has an SD, not to mention all the other gadgets I have. Even though I want all the files on these mobile devices to eventually make their way into my computer, it somehow just never happens.

I suppose this is why most of the newer computers have card-reading slots. Too bad I don’t have one of those. I did have access to the Belkin Universal Media Reader, and I’m now able to get all my scattered files into one convenient place.

The Universal Media Reader allows the user to drag and drop files from one place to another place, whether it be to or from your computer, or simply exchanging files from one card to the other. It supports all kinds of card formats including MS/MS Duo, SD/MMC/MiniSD, M2, SmartMedia/xD, CF/Microdrive, and Micro SD.

It attaches to the computer via USB, and comes with the software to make it work. Yeah, it really isn’t a “plug and play” gadget per se, and I was actually hoping we could have skipped the CD Rom step. I also don’t understand why it comes with two USB cables (one long and one short), but hey, pick the one you want to use.

You should also pick your color. It comes in white or black, and is available for purchasing on the Belkin website for about $49.99.

Although the second Transformer movie didn’t exactly get an outstanding reaction, some people are probably still interested in picking up the sequel. It’s a part of the series, so it’s nice to have around. Maybe after a while you’ll stop noticing those spots in the movie that used to drive you crazy. Well if you’re going to pick up the movie, this is one way to do it. You’ll get the movie as well as a USB drive.

The 4GB drive has the Transformers Revenge Of The Fallen movie already on it. The sequel can be played on up to five devices and is also able to be burned onto a DVD. It also comes with a nifty case to finish off the package. The drive itself despite having the movie on it, still has about 3GB of space left on it for other things you might want to save. You can purchase it for £17.99 or about $30, you can expect to see it shipping out as of the 30th of this month.

Although most people are perfectly capable of getting by with a small hub, there are times when the world could use one of these mega hubs. Likely there are very few that would need this for their at home computer, but it still could be a very useful device. Especially since it’s done in such a way that could make cable management a little easier.

Any device that helps prevent tangled cords is always nice. Since this has the plugs in a circular area, it’s possible you could keep those cords from becoming too intertwined. Each of the ports are numbered, which could also make it easier for you to organize all of your USB devices that you use regularly. The 400-HUB009 is on sale in Japan, it’ll cost you about $54 to get yourself one.

Most webcams only tilt just slighty, well this IPEVO camera actually allows for quite a bit of versatility. If you like to create a lot of different videos that require more than the usual camera, this would work out great. It’s multi-jointed, so it can tilt and bend to your heart’s content. Sure, you could rig the one you own with a makeshift stand, but this one won’t start to droop slowly throughout the video as the tape starts to give.

The 2MP camera has a macro mode to give better closeup images, a handheld grip and a universal monitor clip. It has other features like one-touch snapshot mode and autofocus in both continuous and single-click modes. It comes with the usual software and will work for both a PC and a Mac. You can purchase the IPEVO P2V USB Camera for $69 through IPEVO.

If you’re more of a bright summery kind of girl, then these butterfly USB hubs would probably blend in great with your style. Personally, it just makes me miss the summer that is already over and hope for the one that is nowhere near close. However, anyone can still appreciate the bright cheerful colors these butterflies come in. Especially since they don’t just come in the stereotypical girl color of bright pink.

Instead these come in bright red and a pretty blue. The hub features 4 different ports for all your different gadgets. Plus the hubs are tucked along the sides, so they won’t take away from the look of the butterfly. The hub would be great to have to get rid of all the dull colors that offices seem to feature so proudly. Thankfully while being pretty, the hub is also affordable. You can purchase it for $10.99 from USB Fever.

Elecom has announced some new gadgets for you to enjoy, one of which is this card reader. This cute little card reader will allow for you to keep your desk tidy and look great doing it. As many additions as sometimes get added onto your computer, it’s always nice to find a small USB gadget that doesn’t cause even more clutter within your work area.

This one comes with a magnet on the back so that it can attach to metal objects you might have around. Such as the side of a computer case, a magnetic dry erase board or even would attach to a mini fridge if you keep one of those underneath your desk. Plus to top it off this card reader comes in great bright colors that’ll make it stand out from the boring gray and black electronics. Although you’ll have to decide if the $27 price tag is a bit much for a card reader.

One of the things in life that really need to be simplified is our desktops. Many of us have all sorts of accessories to our PC like memory card readers and iPods, and the Simplifi is designed to take up a lot less real estate on the desk.

The Simplifi is clad in anodized aluminum, and attaches to the computer via USB. Fortunately, no software is required, and my computer recognized it right away.

From there, it can be used to read and write media cards like the SD, XD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, and the Memory Stick Pro. It also has two USB ports in back for any USB device that you wish to use as well.

It can also be used as an iPod or iPhone dock, and it has six dock inserts for this. It also comes with an AC cord, but I was able to get the Simplifi to read and write memory cards with the USB alone.

The Simplifi can be purchased on the Griffin Technology website for a price of $69.99.
(I actually spent more than a penny on that, by the way, but I’m sure you already know that.) I’m pretty sure that they probably don’t do that deal anymore, unless iTunes has some sort of thing like that. However, I still have the cassettes.

Actually, my mother has those cassettes, because she’s probably the only person in this millennium that I know that still listens to that format of music. It might take a while before she gets into digital format, but I am ready for that day with the ION Audio Tape Express.

All a user needs to do is connect the Tape Express to the PC via USB, and allow the EZ tape converter software to turn that tape into an MP3 in hardly any time at all.

It is nice of ION audio to construct the Tape Express to resemble a very old-school Sony Walkman. By the way, you can actually use the Tape Express to play your old cassettes next time you are feeling a little old school. Hopefully it has a faster rewind than my old portable tape player.

You should be able to get the ION Audio Tape Express for about $80.

My external hard drive is much like others, it’s plastic and not very interesting. However, I have had no problems with it, so I see no need to replace it. Yet I’m still a little envious of those that have managed to get their hands on an external hard drive that actually looks good. Well this Brinell is another one of those drives that’ll leave many green with envy.

The wood grain look isn’t anything over the top, after all, it’s not like it’s covered in bright shiny crystals. Instead it goes for an understated sophisticated look, but it’s just enough to give itself an edge over the usual plain plastic models. Not only will it be available in the exotic wood shown here, but stainless steel, nappa leather and carbon as well. Having that many choices should keep just about anyone satisfied. The capacities come in a range of sizes that top out at 500GB. Depending on the size they’ll be sold for anywhere from $284 on up to $344. It’ll also come with a 1 year warranty.

This walks a very delicate line between cute and just plain wrong. Sure, the bear is absolutely adorable, however, the place to plug in the charger seems a bit unfortunate. It might be better if they chose to plug him in at his mouth or even the center of the bear’s back. Yet for some reason they had to go for the rear, we’ll just think of it as an overly long tale.

This plug makes it possible to plug in all of your devices that usually require a USB port to charge. There’s no shortage of adapters that make it possible to plug your USB gadgets into the wall, but none do it all the while being a pastel little bear. It comes in not only the adorable pink, but in white and black as well. In order to pick up your very own, it’ll cost you 1980 yen or about $9. Of course it might be difficult since it is a Japanese product.

If you have a co-worker that really just needs paid back for their charming personality, here’s the way to do it. It’ll allow for you to sneakily drive them crazy, but not do any actual harm to their computer. This USB drive can be jammed into the back of the computer where they’re highly unlikely to find it, unless they should inspect the back. However, by that time you’ll have gotten at least a little enjoyment out of their frustration.

The USB drive has a time delay, so it gives you plenty of time to get away from their computer before it starts causing trouble. Once it does start working it’ll turn the caps lock on and off, type out random text and phrases as well as make the mouse make random movements. I’d be careful who you play this trick on though, if they find out it was you they’ll be itching for revenge. Right now there’s not any pricing information, but you can expect to see more on the Thumbs Up website at the end of the month.
