Safari 4 public beta announced

February 25th, 2009 by Edwin in PC Gadgets, Software

Apple has just dropped an announcement of the public beta of Safari 4, touted to be the fastest and most innovative web browser for Mac and Windows PCs in the world. Hopefully they will be able to live up to this claim, as Safari 4 uses the Nitro engine which is able to run JavaScript 4.2 times faster than Safari 3 in a controlled test environment. As with any new version of software or hardware, one can expect new innovative features to make the cut, and in this case, we hope that our browsing experience will be more intuitive and enjoyable. One of the more interesting feature that we’d look forward to would be Top Sites, as it offers a visual preview of frequently visited pages (would it be like thumbnails found in Google’s Chrome?), a full History Search, Cover Flow for easy flipping through web history or bookmarks and Tabs on Top that helps ease the pain of tabbed browsing (not that we found it hard to do so in the first place).

Internet Clock Radio

February 21st, 2009 by Edwin in PC Gadgets, Software

You know something? I find it amazing that watches are still in vogue – after all, the digital lifestyle sees us carry at least a couple of timepieces at any one time including our MP3 player, portable media player, cell phone, notebook or desktop. Guess a good watch is one that boasts a timeless design as well as accurate reading, while it wouldn’t hurt to have it come with diamonds studded all over to function as a fashion accessory. For folks who live on a much more meager salary, there are always more affordable alternatives around, and in this case, free. The Internet Clock Radio will need a basic (free again) version of the RealPlayer plugin to work, although Safari and Opera web browsers are not supported.

eFileFolders looks and works just like paper folders

February 20th, 2009 by Edwin in PC Gadgets, Software

Take a walk around any well kept home or office and chances are you will find a bunch of folders in the study or library. They might contain anything from telephone bills to insurance receipts as well as monthly utility bills, but the whole point to this is, a file is useful when you want to organize things into different compartments and segments so that they are easily retrievable whenever you need them. Files have also inspired modern user interfaces in computers to appear as a virtual folder, but eFileFolders aim to take another step forward in this department. As Aftab Jiwani, founder of eFileFolders proudly stated, “If Content is King, then User Interface is the Queen, Prince, Princess and all the rest.” More on eFileFolders right after the jump.

Google Earth 5.0 takes you underwater

February 3rd, 2009 by Edwin in Software

Google Earth is one truly amazing piece of software, and I am glad that I am alive to actually see it work – something our ancestors could not, having to settle for maps instead of turning on a computer to view other parts of the world from the comfort of their air-conditioned room. Well, there is no reason for Google to rest upon their laurels, which leads us to an improvement on their project by offering a new feature to users – allowing us to dive beneath the water surface to explore underwater terrain in 3D while browsing ocean-related content courtesy of leaders in ocean science and advocacy. Personally, I think the entire effect would be much more pronounced if Google included some sort of Trash-o-Meter to indicate which segments of the earth’s water are polluted so that more awareness can be raised among the current generation to prevent further degradation of our seven seas.

Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate out now

January 27th, 2009 by Edwin in PC Gadgets, Software

Browser was have been pretty interesting in the past, and for those of us who thought that Netscape would be invincible for all time to come, we were sorely mistaken, and that came about as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) displaced Netscape as the numero uno Web browser on computers. Of course, Microsoft’s IE has then gone on to dominate the desktop browser segment for years, but with the advent of open source browsers like Firefox, IE’s market share has started to slide, and it shows no signs of stopping. Sure, Microsoft is still well poised with the largest percentage of users, but having its share being nipped away slowly but surely with time is a worrying sign, and the executives at the Redmond, Washington facility have surely taken notice of that. Hence ladies and gentlemen, we have the announcement that Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate is available now for your testing.
