Download Cool Google Stuff

January 7th, 2006 by Al in Software

Google Pack
Google seem to come out with new products and services on a near daily basis, the majority of which are either really cool or just plain useful (it always impresses me exploring new countries using Google Earth). Today they’ve decided to make it easier for us to download them all at once by means of the new Google Pack.

Thunderbird hits 1.5… nearly

December 29th, 2005 by Marc in Software

Thunderbird logo
Apparently the Mozilla email client, Thunderbird, has had another spurt of development and hit version 1.5, RC2 status. This happened in November so I’ve been very slow in watching it and there’ll probably be a new one along any time now…

I’m a fan of Thunderbird - it’s portable, fairly feature packed and most importantly of all it renders HTML mails without running any embedded scripts, unlike outlook that simply embeds IE with all the security holes that go with it. It also displays HTML without the graphics by default, saving you mail download time (and potential embarresment!)

1.5 features various tweaks to stability, security and the UI but the big news for many people is that you can now use “forward” as an action on the email rules list - a long awaited feaure.

If you’re not using it now, it’s well worth a look-see. Download from mozilla.org

novaPDF Lite PDF Creator

December 8th, 2005 by Keith in Miscellaneous Gadgets, Software

novaPDF

Adobe Acrobat has been the reknown popular PDF Creator for Windows. For some, users may just buy them off the shelves, but to others where financial is a little constrained, Adobe Acrobat just seems too dear to be purchased in a legal way. Well, instead of resorting to illegal downloads, or purchasing pirated copies of Adobe Acrobat, novaPDF is available for download freely and yet does the job equally well in creating professional quality documents in industry-standard PDF file format.

The VoipBuster IP Telecommunication

November 29th, 2005 by Keith in Audio/Video Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets, Software

VoipBuster

I am quite sure many of you heard of VOIP (Voice Over IP), and often will relate to the renown Skype Technologies S.A., recently acquired by eBay. Providing several services for many users, including free Skype-to-Skype calls, low tariff rate for SkypeOut, Beta version of SkypeIn and corperate type of Skype Groups, one of the most attractive offers Skype has offered is SkypeOut, with low tariff rates to several countries around the world. Since, acquired by eBay several months ago, there is been largely little improvement to Skype, nonetheless not to mention lower rates.

This is where a new challenger comes in, the VoipBuster! Other than providing FREE peer-to-peer calls, it also introduces FREE IP-to-landline calls to some destinations in the world. Currently at beta release, I have tested the software and it’s brilliantly cost-efficient and worth the money to switch from Skype.

Google base comes out of hiding

November 16th, 2005 by Marc in Software, Tech News

Taking the next step in their bid to own the entire internet, Google have launched Google Base.

It takes the “tagging” concept familiar to photographers (look at flickr for an example) and applies it to data. Any data. If it can be represented in HTML, it can be stored, described and searched. The idea is you upload your data (recipie, car for sale, resume, cool idea for a new nuclear powered toaster, whatever). Then you tag it with text attributes, i.e “toaster”, “nuclear power”, “zany”.

Currently google base is a separate search but in time I’d expect base data to be integrated into the normal google search results.

As to why… ummm… why not? I guess it’s an easy way of publishing specific targeted content but I can see it getting polluted very quickly - if anybody can upload anything and tag it as anything they like, google will have some fun sorting out the data!
