Atlas Gloves - Control Google Earth with Hand Gestures

September 13th, 2006 by Al in Software

Atlas Gloves

What can you make out of 2 ping pong balls, a glue gun, 2 LED lights and a nail? A DIY hand gesture interface for Google Earth, obviously.

Atlas gloves are very easy to make (full instructions here) and with the help of a little free application you can navigate the globe by simple hand gestures. You’ve got to watch the video to appreciate how these things work, very strange.

Hat tip to Case for the link (via our gadget forums).

Browzar Updates

September 10th, 2006 by Tiago in Software

Browzar

After severe critiques by almost every tech related blog on the net about the new “privacy” internet browser called Browzar, the software has been updated with a couple a unique interesting change.

One of the most criticized points, the search engine that provided sponsored results (without making it very visible) on the first 2 or 3 pages has been transformed into something else. Now it uses the Ask.com engine, there are still sponsored links (which is normal in search engines) but now they are more visible – contain the word Sponsored Results under a light-blue background. These kind of links are usually visible on top of the first normal results only, but Browzar takes one step forward and includes them on the bottom of every page too.

Katie Couric’s Photoshop Diet

September 9th, 2006 by methodshop in PC Gadgets, Software

Have you heard about the new celebrity diet craze? It’s easy. No dieting or exercise is required. Just a few Adobe Photoshop lessons and you can lose 20 pounds in the matter of minutes… like new CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric.

Evidence of Katie’s new “digital diet” was published in a CBS publicity magazine called Watch, and distributed on American Airlines flights. The former NBC Today star’s neck and waistline have clearly been digitally “photoshopped” to make her look about 20 pounds lighter. The original photo was taken at an advertiser presentation earlier this spring before getting a digital workout in CBS’ graphics department.

Is CBS photoshopping more than publicity photos of news anchors? We hope not. Why not let a photo speak for itself?

Browzar - a stinky browser with adware

September 2nd, 2006 by Tiago in Software

Browzar

Browzar was announced a few days ago as a new internet browser with the slogan - Your private window on the Web. There was a lot of hype on different big and important websites (Register, BBC and others) because this new piece of shit software was suppose to offer plenty of benefits such as no installation required, browsing history, stored files and cookies were not saved to protect the users privacy, being freeware and only occupying 246k of space were the other bonus offers.

Well, it didn’t take long for everyone on the internet (besides the previous mainstream sites) to notice that Browzar is nothing but a program with adware and doesn’t have the announced features. It is considered adware/bullshit program by many people. Read the rest of this entry »

Assign Drive Letter i to Your iPod

August 23rd, 2006 by methodshop in Software, iPod gadgets

Microsoft Windows assigns drive letters to disk volumes to help tell them apart. For example, the default letter assigned to your computer’s hard drive is probably ‘c.’ Each time you dock the iPod to a PC, Windows will assign the iPod the next available drive letter, such as ‘f’ or ‘g.’ But isn’t the letter ‘i’ the most appropriate drive letter assignment for the iPod?

Here’s a simple tutorial on how to assign the drive letter ‘i’ to an iPod connected to a PC using Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000.

Backups made easy with Western Digital’s My Book

August 19th, 2006 by Mike in PC Gadgets, Software

People tend not to back up their data, and only realize it would’ve been a good idea to do so when it’s too late. There’s probably a variety of reasons, to expensive, cumbersome, or they just don’t know how to go about it.Western Digital's My Book

The Western Digital My Book tries to make automated backup simple for you. Bundled with the Premium and Pro versions is quality backup software that allows you to recover from crashes, and setup automated backups so you don’t have to worry about it. In the essential version (cheapest), no backup software is included, only Google Desktop.

The My Book is great for backing up data, but it’s easy to use as a second drive for files as well. Just plug your My Book into the computer and the necessary software will be installed from the drive itself, no CDs to lose. After that you’ve got a second drive for all your videos, music, pictures, and whatever else you’d like to store.

USB RC Car Simulator

July 11th, 2006 by Al in Gaming Gadgets, Remote Control Toys, Software, USB Gadgets

USB RC ControllerI’m not sure if this is cool or not. It’s a computer simulation of a remote control car with a realistic high end controller. The Controller connects via USB and is used to control the remote control car on screen.

It does look cool but I’m still left with the feeling that this type of simulation is overkill, I can understand racing games and flight sims as Mr Joe Public isn’t going to get a chance to race an F1 or fly a Tornado but a remote control car is within most peoples grasp and it’s not like there’s a risk of serious injury if you crash it.

Then again the more I look at this the more I want one, so ignore that previous rant :).

July 7th, 2006 by Randal in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, PC Gadgets, Software

Skype TVSuppose you are a traveling salesman with a yen for the local anchorwoman. You spend day after fruitless day on the road, only to come home each night to a lonely hotel room. You sit there in your underwear drinking beer and watching the sub-par anchorwomen of whatever godforsaken town you happen to be in tonight. Well fret no more because the Japanese company Novac has released a television tuner for Skype software. It enables your computer to broadcast TV shows via the internet. With a laptop and an internet connection you can watch your local shows no matter where you happen to be.
