Calendars, planners and apps,, Oh my! Do they suck!

March 5th, 2007 by Fred in Conceptual Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets, Software, Tech News

I’m MAD!calendargh!

Not in the Mothers Against Drunk Driving type,, but mad nonetheless.

This weekend for some weird reason, my palm pilot crapped out on me and though my contacts and memos still exist, I completely lost all distinct events listed in my calendar (my 4th pilot since 1997, love them for their simplicity, kinda frustrated right now).

Maybe I’m just dumb (don’t worry I hit the revert button right away,, nothing), but I’ve been thinking a lot about planning and scheduling apps. I have access to far too many of them, let’s see, Palm, Outlook, Yahoo, Gmail, MSN, Scrybe (yayy the beta is rocking, more on that later) and Evite (yes, I count Evite, it’s a great service that does a specific job very well, but lacks in my main complaint here).

On to my whine (and no, I’m not drinking any @#($* merlot!)

Why has no one created an email-able calendar event notification that is insert-able in ANY scheduling program?!

This has driven me mad for far too long. Half of my events require some other human to be there. I don’t want to “run their life” but I do want them to have a reminder available, no matter how they prefer to schedule their life. The issue we’ve all run into is simple, WE ALL PLAN DIFFERENTLY. However, we all do plan (sort of ). Read the rest of this entry »

Keep your computer crash free (sort of)

February 18th, 2007 by Mike in Software, USB Gadgets

Kick-off USB Dongle

Computers don’t really crash that often anymore, and you can go on and on about how often Windows crashes and how little OS X crashes, but in the end, it’s really not that big of a deal. . . unless you do something uber important that requires 100% uptime. For those people who worry about crashes when they’re not around to fix them, Kick-Off is the hardware software solution you need.

Necromanthus brings classic FPS to a browser near you

February 13th, 2007 by Marc in Software

necromanthus.jpg
Here’s a pretty neat piece of work - Quake, Doom and the original half life amongst others brought back to life as shockwave games for your browser! If you just fancy a quick blast at lunchtime it’s there for the taking, and not a single piece of software needs to be installed to violate those strict company IT policies :-) (although you will need the Shockwave plugin for your browser)

Some of the games are just demos, some are more fully featured. I found the Quake 3 particularly nicely done - even if it was just the one level it was complete with original graphics and sounds. I still jump at the sound of the Q3 shotgun - sign of a mis-spent youth :-D

X-Gate helps fight against paedophiles

February 5th, 2007 by Edwin in Childrens Gadgets, PC Gadgets, Software

x-gate.jpgAnyone with a broadband connection at home will definitely spend a better part of their time surfing the Internet, and it is no different whether one is an adult or a kid. As an adult, we take responsibility over the welfare of our kids, and that responsibility does not stop when it comes to surfing the Internet. With the technological explosion happening all over the world, it is imperative for parents to not only know where their kids are physically, they also need to be aware of their offsprings’ digital footprints. One can never know who the person behind a username smokescreen really is for a start, and this hidden identity is a strategy used by those preying on younger children. Do your part by picking up the X-Gate that helps secure your home’s Internet connection against any unwanted danger.

IntelliScanner Mini helps your organize your life

January 15th, 2007 by Mike in Electronic Gadgets, Home Gadgets, PC Gadgets, Software

IntelliScanner Mini
Keeping my E-mail, music, video, and photos organized is pretty easy, it just takes a few minutes of setting up different folders on my hard drive or, in some cases, just opening up iTunes or Gmail. As far as anything non-digital goes, forget it, I couldn’t tell you where half of the stuff I own is. Cataloging your entire wine collection, comic collection, book library, and games isn’t exactly something you want to do by hand. Looking up the ISBN number of 50 different books on Amazon isn’t the ideal way to spend a Saturday. What you could do is use the new IntelliScanner Mini to scan the barcodes of all of your items and have them be indexed automatically.

The top of your head, on Google Earth @ 1meter resolution!

January 5th, 2007 by Fred in Miscellaneous Gadgets, Remote Control Toys, Software, Tech News

The good folks at Google Earth (you have downloaded it, haven’t you) have some seriouspictearth fans by the name of Pict`Earth.

They’ve got a great little bit of gear and software. They provide the coolest service for viewing high resolution overhead images.

A small RC airplane flies at low level and records high resolution video. The video is then placed into Google Earth and is actively used to display nap of the earth images.

One of the key uses they’re touting it for is to record events from overhead. Just think of all the great things you could soon see on Google Earth: the overhead of the crowd from a football game, the throngs of a marathon crossing a well known bridge, bulls running down drunken runners in Pamplona, the possibilities are endless!
