Ulead’s the way in AVCHD editing capability

May 2nd, 2007 by James in Photography, Software

Ulead

With Sony’s annoying reliance on proprietary software solutions, many camcorder users have complained that such formats like AVCHD are almost impossible to edit with their existing software. This has prompted a race to create plugins to handle the Sony format and it seems that Ulead has broken the tape with Ulead VideoStudio 11. Other features of VideoStudio include Vista support, HD DVD authoring and Dolby® Digital 5.1 surround sound.

New users can rely on VideoStudio’s Movie Wizard which helps to select from various themes and can also “auto-edit” a professional looking opening sequence. In addition, it can also perform the famous Ken Burns effect of Panning & Zooming on still photos for photo montages and slide shows.

Toshiba Tablet PC review (and what’s good to load on a new machine)

April 26th, 2007 by Fred in Electronic Gadgets, Gadget Reviews, Miscellaneous Gadgets, PC Gadgets, Software

toshiba lappy tabletSo as mentioned, I’ ordered and received my Toshiba Tablet PC,

well it’s here! I want to be careful of what I load so it stays light, mean and useful.

Its loaded with a CD-R/DVD, loads of RAM and power, built in thumb print scanner and SD card reader. Best of all, a wonderful stylus that allows me to draw on the screen. It just rocks.

The thumb print scanner seemed useless, until I realized that my ridiculously long password is a thing of the past, I just need to swipe my finger,, I’m starting to like that convenience.

As for the stylus control, it could be a tad tighter, but it’s still miles better than even the best Wacom pad (trust me, I’ve been using them for years!)

The SD card reader being built in is just great, it’s already saved me from having to go home with loaded cards, I just blast em in there and keep taking pictures!

Here is the software I’ve loaded so far (you have to keep reading). Read the rest of this entry »

April 25th, 2007 by methodshop in Software, Tech News

Want to make it big as a music video director/editor? The band Modest Mouse wants help making a video for their new song “Missed the Boat.” With the help of Apple, Modest Mouse posted 12 high quality videos (each shot at a different angle) of them performing in front of a green screen.

The public is encouraged to download these video clips and edit them together into one final music video. Feel free to use your own footage and experiment the green screen.

Why is Apple generously providing massive amounts of bandwidth for people to download these giant high resolution video clips?

Remove Red Eye In Adobe Photoshop

April 12th, 2007 by methodshop in Photography, Software

Red eye. What a pain in the ass. I have so many great photos in my iPhoto Library which have been ruined because of red eye. Sometimes I use the red eye tools iPhoto or Adobe Photoshop to fix problematic images, but unfortunately they don’t always do a good job.

Luckily red eye is very easy to fix manually in Adobe Photoshop (US, UK). You just need to know how. Here’s a tutorial on how to remove red eye using Adobe Photoshop 7.0 or higher.

March 29th, 2007 by Mike in Software, Tech News

iTunes Logo
Thanks, Apple. Even though you’re a bit late with this, I still appreciate it. You see, today Apple released a new feature for iTunes called “Complete My Album.” It’s kinda sorta self explanatory, but not really. Read on if you want to know more.

BillaBoop Drum Machine

March 16th, 2007 by Al in Conceptual Gadgets, Software

BillaBoopThe BillaBoop is a new kind of drumming machine, it recognises sounds that you make like clapping a desk or clicking your fingers and then converts them into a proper drum noise.

BillaBoop has been developed by PhD student Amaury Hazan (students have so much fun) whose studying Machine Learning, Music Cognition and Audio Signal Processing. Which basically means he’s pretty clever and has programmed the BillaBoop to learn the noises that you make which drive the drums.

You’ve probably got to watch the video to understand what this bit of software does, if you can’t see the video click here.

*Rant* - Vista

March 13th, 2007 by Al in Software

Vista UltimateJust to warn you in advance that there is a fair chance that this post will turn into something of a rant as I’m now into day 2 of life with Microsoft Vista and the grass is certainly not always greener.

First off this is totally my fault as I didn’t need to upgrade, I’ve been using XP for years and been pretty happy with it. But it’s coming up to the end of my tax year and anything I don’t spend I have to give 40% to the government to waste (that could easily be rant #2), so I thought this would be a good time to give Bill a bit more cash and upgrade to Vista Ultimate.
