Russian ATM runs on illegal Windows

June 11th, 2007 by Edwin in Software

russian-windows.jpg

Now this is truly hilarious – an ATM machine in Russia “pleading” with users to activate this particular copy of Windows within seven days. What a hoot! I didn’t know banks in Russia actually used the services of street vendors who are known as notorious software pirates. Do you have any funny ATM stories to share with us? Kindly leave a comment below if the answer is in the affirmative.

May 29th, 2007 by Fred in Gadget Reviews, Miscellaneous Gadgets, Software, USB Gadgets

palm announcementStaying organized, its a difficult task that all of us are involved in, one way or another, EVERY SINGLE DAY.

There are a ton of options: Moleskine, Palm Pilot, Blackberry, Online with Google Cal, Yahoo Calendar, Scrybe, Plaxo, the old standby Outlook, Highrise, and many more.

As I began writing this article I found this note (and this one), indicating Mr. Hawkins and the team at Palm are releasing a new product tomorrow morning (11:30 Pacific Time)

Windlight atmospheric beauty to light 2nd life

May 22nd, 2007 by Fred in PC Gadgets, Software

2nd life windlight rendererSunrise, Sunset,,, enough of that Tevia, now in Second Life you can see much more natural (and depending on how your local environment is set,, un-natural skyscapes.)

The folks at Linden Labs are using the Windlight atmospheric renderer. It takes your boring sky to monstrously gorgeous levels (take a picture why don’t you!)

Linden Labs has acquired Windward Mark (do you think that company likes sailing just a bit?) Their rendering package is now a part of everybody’s favorite other life and now, well, the future looks bright (hang on, I’m going to put a few more bad puns in here.

Don’t miss the awesome Flickr group of these new images produced with the Windlight package, they look great! Read the rest of this entry »

YouMail, individualized voicemail to freak out everyone you know

May 18th, 2007 by Fred in Miscellaneous Gadgets, Mobile Phones, Software, Tech News

youmail logoSo I called my best buddy from the age of 5 the other day, and this is what I heard, “Hey Fred! I’m kinda busy right now,, what’s up?    Short Pause,,,,Leave a message!” BEEP!!!

Doh! Did I feel stupid,, then I felt really cool. Hey, he’s set up a whole phone just for me (mainly due to the fact that I call incessantly, cause he’s super busy, so I just routinely call and sometimes we get to talk (its easier that way). I was fooled by YouMail!

The best part is, the basic plan is free. That’s right totally personalized voice mail messages (and easy setup,, apparently the trick is to set up a speed-dial key on your mobile to call the YouMail VM.  You can also use it to check your voice mail online! Read the rest of this entry »

How to read more RSS feeds than you can imagine!

May 17th, 2007 by Fred in Software, Tech News

This comes via a collection of some of my favorite online humans (and one I know).

First, I am a frequenter on David Seah’s blog. If you’re a graphic designer, go there. If you have to manage your time for any reason, go there. If you like great food, go there. Eh, it’s David go, he’s great. David wrote a review of Timothy Ferris’s book Four Hour Work Week, which I’m finishing later tonight. It is absoloutely amazing. So just go get it. You know,, if you like lifechanging ideas and stuff like that.

So while following Timothy Ferris’s travels (and there are a LOT) he went and talked to the Scobleizer! ( Robert Scoble Writer/Prolific blogger/ techno-maestro /Mr. Plugged in).

Where’s the RSS reading tricks? (well just wait a sec, here they are!) Timothy Ferris and Robert Scoble got together and made a quick video of how Robert manages to put such massive amounts of information into his brain on a daily basis. (pssst,, keep reading for more!) May 13th, 2007 by Edwin in PC Gadgets, Software, USB Gadgets

sandisk-ms.jpgMicrosoft and SanDisk have recently dropped some interesting information that both companies will be collaborating over a technology-sharing agreement that sees a future replacement to SanDisk’s U3 line of USB smart drives that will be released to consumers by the second half of next year. This new piece of technology is expected to carry personal data as well as Windows software applications that can be launched by simply plugging in the device into any available USB port at the moment. The revamped product does not only contain personalized email and Web browsers, but will feature a personalized computing environment along with a customized interface, applications and data to boot.

Oh Google where art thou? (some things for you to do)

May 11th, 2007 by Fred in Miscellaneous Gadgets, Software

googleWell you may vaguely remember I have gone on mild tirade/suggestion lists.

One of the kind humans over at Lifehack.org, (and obvious Googleophyte (not that there’s anything wrong with it)) recently had a great piece in the same vein. Sadly they don’t have their name on the article so that I can thank them correctly. This is the article in question.

Their focus is on Gmail (duh), Google Reader, Google Docs and Spreadsheets, and Google Calender. It is a nice simple piece that outlines some simple and direct opportunities for Google to improve its services, and/or for other companies to pay attention and provide the services that people are asking for. If they don’t, well there are a million people out there looking to pick up the slack in any one of those niches. Our friends over at Planypus for example. Great product, simple, well executed, and just looking for larger adoption rates. Those guys have responded to feedback and constantly improved their solution.

May 6th, 2007 by Andi in PC Gadgets, Software, Tech News
dell and ubuntu

Some of Dell’s more reasonably-priced computers are about to become even cheaper. PC beginners will enjoy an easier entry in the computing world and will be treated much friendlier. Why that? Well, due to popular request, Dell have decided to offer a free software suite and a very friendly distribution of Linux for some of their desktop PCs and laptops. They have finally chosen Ubuntu, as it’s one of the friendliest distributions.
