Go wooden with DIY keyboard

by Edwin

wood-kb.jpg

Now this isn’t exactly the most environmentally friendly of all computer peripherals, but at least it is more biodegradable than your standard plastic 101-key keyboard. Hailing from Japan, this DIY wood keyboard requires you to actually cut each key out yourself, placing them in the order of your choice. Granted, you would probably choose the QWERTY layout but the weirder ones among you would probably settle for DVORAK or something more original. I suppose this wood was not cut from virgin forests, so don’t feel too guilty about picking one of these €200 DIY wood keyboards up. At the very least, you can burn it to keep you warm during the cold winter months especially after oil has just breached the psychologically important $90/barrel mark.

Free beer for life!

by Edwin

lost-laptop-reward.jpgWell, sort of anyways. I know that any self respecting Coolest Gadgets writer will definitely jump at the opportunity to win a lifetime supply of free beer (never mind the Dow dropping more than 300 points on Friday – after knocking back a few pints of Guinness, all your sorrows will be washed away albeit for a moment). Here’s the chance for you to seize this opportunity as the Croucher Brewing Company in Rotorua, New Zealand, is offering a lifetime supply of free beer to get back a stolen laptop than contains financial records, contract details, and other proprietary information of the company. Who knows, that piece of hardware might even hold the recipe for its Belgian Blonde ale?

Nokia announces N810

by Edwin

nokia-n810.jpg

The Internet tablet idea was pretty groovy when it was introduced in the form of Nokia’s 770 Internet tablet a couple of years ago – after all, having a device that surfs the Web wirelessly while supporting email, Internet radio, an RSS news reader, an image viewer and media playback capability certainly sounds like a dream. Fast forward a couple of years later, you would probably think that such a device is actually a cellphone, hence doing away with the need for something like the Nokia 770. Or is it? Apparently Nokia thinks otherwise, releasing the N810 Internet tablet that essentially does the same thing as before, save for updated hardware to keep up with the times. It seems that the target market are casual Internet users who want to browse the Web while commercials are being shown, or for those who need to check their email without having to lug around a laptop wherever they go. More on the Nokia N810 after the jump.

Universal Music to sell singles on USB drives

by Edwin

universalmusic-usb.jpg

Universal Music is taking a different approach where selling singles are concerned – by releasing them on USB memory sticks. This new format aims to stop rapidly declining music sales by offering an alternative format to those in the 12 to 24 year old demographic. The price of each USB single will hover slightly above $10, which is roughly $4 higher than current CD singles. Don’t these guys get it yet – the good days are over, and digital media distribution is the way of the future. Why not learn how to embrace it by operating in a leaner and more efficient manner instead of chasing after something that is bound to fail?

ATI shares new TV tuners with the world

by Edwin

ati-tv-wonders.jpgATI has released a bunch of new TV tuners for those who have been thinking about including a computer in their living room as part of the entire home entertainment package, instead of the usual LCD TV, HD DVD/Blu-ray player, and high end audio center taking all the attention. The products in question are the ATI TV Wonder 650 Combo USB, TV wonder 600 PCI Express and the TV Wonder 600 PCI. All of these tuners will be able to bring HDTV goodness to the computer, so make sure your rig runs silently enough not to interfere with dialog in a movie due to the noisy hum of its cooling solution.
