USB Floppy Disk Drive

by Edwin - on January 31st, 2012

The famous 5.25″ floppy – single-sided or double-sided, sir? Imagine swapping such disks when playing games, and installation proved to be a pain when you have seven, nay, eight of these floppies to go through. 3.5″ floppies were far sturdier and less prone to damage, so why not usher in a modern interpretation of a retro device? The £26.99 USB Floppy Disk Drive is as what it says – all you need to do is plug this into any available USB port, and it is capable of transferring all 1.44MB of data on a 3.5″ floppy disk over to your computer. Pretty pointless actually, and in this day and age, probably the only things you can carry around on the floppy would be a couple of sized down images and perhaps a text file or two.

If you are one who basks in nostalgia, and would love to hear the sounds that come from a floppy disk drive of old being read, then this is it. Otherwise, it would still make for a great conversation starter, and there is even the classic LED which lights up when plugged in to indicate power, read and write activity.

I used to spend a lot of time tied to my desk computer, then finally we had wireless routers and laptops, so I was at least able to make it into the living room. Antec Three Hundred Two gaming chassis

by Edwin

Gamers are known for their meticulous attention to detail when it comes to their rig – they more or less know where each screw lies, and what components they need in order to eke out that extra bit of performance. Well, for gamers who prefer to take the DIY route and build a gaming machine that is good enough to pummel your friends’ benchmark scores into submission, Antec might have a decent solution for you in the form of the Antec Three Hundred Two gaming chassis.

This is considered as the next generation of gaming chassis with high-performance cooling advantages and extensive expandability, all without breaking your bank account in the process and getting the other half upset at spending “frivolously” (that depends on whose point of view it is now, isn’t it?).

Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

by Edwin

There are moments in life when we look at a particular object and think, “Now why didn’t I think of this before?” I am quite sure that many of us who spent our teenage years in the mid-1990s would have played the game Command & Conquer at some point in time or another, where the almighty tank could be stopped by something as simple as sandbags, and had hours and hours of fun honing our RTS skills in front of the computer. Well, a hardcore coder decided that playing the game today on a legacy system is just too mainstream, and coded the entire Command & Conquer in HTML5, where the entire thing runs on 69k of Javascript.

Aditya Ravi Shankar built the clone as part of his attempt to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself an entire month to do so, building the game in the browser while going through the original game’s files in order to get sprites, sounds and specs just the way it was. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.”

Still, he got the job done, and there were some glitches here and there during testing, such as tanks getting stuck in the sea, and it works best in Chrome or Firefox. If you want to help improve Shankar’s work, check out the source code here.

Popar Books – Reach Out and Grab you… really!

by Julie

So here we go, even our books are becoming high tech, I can see it now, gone are the days of the quiet library. No longer will we feel the evil eye and hear the stern Shhhhhh… of the librarian. Someday, and that day may be here sooner rather than later, the library will sound like an arcade, with all the bells and whistles, lights flashing and spinning, books just begging to be read… literally. But I have to say, I’m alright with it, in fact I’m okay with anything that gets my kid to read. A high tech library… can you imagine it?

Well Popar Toys sure can, Popar Toys is using Augmented Reality (AR) technology to create an immersive learning experience that will allow its users to see the books printed pages blossom with incredible virtual 3D objects and animations that will seem to just jump off the pages. The “magic” works by way of a webcam and Popar’s specially coded books and cards, that when held up for the camera, seem to “come alive” around its user, right on your computer screen! Check out the video after the jump… Continue reading » Popar Books – Reach Out and Grab you… really!

Fujitsu Lifebook 2013 merges all the gizmos

by Edwin

If there is something about concepts that are worth exploring, it is because the mind is freed to enjoy total creativity without having to be bogged down by “details” such as the limitations of physics laws and the like. A concept that works can normally be found in science fiction movies and series, such as Star Wars and Star Trek, never mind that sound travels through space for us audience. The Fujitsu Lifebook 2013 is another idea that has taken on a totally different dimension, where it will function as a meeting point for many of today’s individual gizmos that we carry around with us.

Most of us already own a digital camera, have a smartphone, a tablet, and a notebook – what happens when you need to travel? Packing for all of that gear alone does take up a fair bit of space and luggage weight quota, so Prashant Chandra decided to get creative and envision a future that merges all of these into a single package, using all the shared computing power simultaneously to boot.
