Saving space seems to be all the rage these days, thanks to the miniaturization of devices and machines around us. Take a look at your cellphone – it probably packs in a much faster processor compared to your desktop a few years back, right? The desktop PC has also quietly undergone its own revolution, with nettops making more and more of a presence (or nuisance, depending on how you look at it) while all-in-one PCs are also catching up in popularity simply because most of them are aesthetically pleasing while packing enough punch to deliver the processing power required for basic computing tasks such as surfing, checking e-mail as well as the occasional spot of casual gaming. The latest all-in-one PC to hit the market would be the Wind Top AE2220 from MSI, where it is now available Stateside as MSI’s flagship model in this department. The AE2220 extends the award-winning Wind Top line with new levels of performance, usability, energy-efficiency, and functionality in an affordable, stylish and eco-friendly design for today’s PC-centric families. To know more about the AE2220, head on after the jump.

You will get a 21.5″ screen with 16:9 widescreen display, full HD (1080p) resolution and high-fidelity 5.1-channel SRS Premium Sound to get you drooling even if it is still in its box. Meant to offer home users with theater-like multimedia entertainment, the inclusion of NVIDIA ION graphics certainly helps its cause in that department, while you can choose from the latest Intel Core 2 Duo/Pentium Dual Core processors for all your processing power needs. This wold mean it is able to run HD movies effortlessly, alongside resource-hungry applications and sophisticated 3D games without batting an eyelid. As for connectivity options, the AE2220 comes with VGA and HDMI input ports, letting it function as the primary home computer, TV or a widescreen display device for video-capable devices including game consoles.

Powered by the latest Windows 7 operating system, we’ve still no word on its pricing just yet.

Back in the days, having a firewall was a decent option if you wanted to secure your network against incoming attacks from the outside, but these days not just any firewall will do. Wiresoft, being a leading provider of affordable, high performance network security products for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), has just unveiled Firegate, where it is touted to be the industry’s foremost “unbreakable” firewall delivering enterprise-level security plus disaster recovery without breaking the bank – perfect for such an economic climate. Just to get a better impression of how “steady” and reliable it is, the Firegate’s core technology platform has never been penetrated in either laboratory or market conditions to date. In order to underline its robustness and security, Wiresoft has issued a challenge, offering up to $24,000 in prize money to anyone who can hack Firegate within 24 hours.

Dubbed the “Hack Us If You Can” challenge, it will be open to all from November 16 onwards, and you can check out the challenge rules here. Guess there will be plenty of coffee being passed around by a group of ethical hackers as they vie for 24 grand, no small sum even by today’s standards as that can get the winner a brand new ride or a super souped up gaming rig with more than enough cash to spare. According to Wiresoft President Tom Schram, “With Firegate, businesses have a real alternative: a single all-in-one system that foils network security threats, provides full back-up, and is available at a price that any SMB can afford. Hack us if you can – we dare you.”

Firegate is a unified threat management (UTM) network security product, where a solitary platform will help protect companies against all network security threats. It offers firewall, individually configurable spamwall, unlimited VPN support, content filtering and anti-virus protection, where it has been included in a single price point without any hidden charges or add-ons. Any takers?

Fret not, you can still enjoy your golf game via Magnetic Golf, where you can always kill some time at the office with this £11.99 toy.

Besides your little magnetic golfer himself (apparently there’s no female version of him – that’s not very representative, now is it?), you’ve got a green with a moveable hole, a bunker, a water hazard and some trees to set up your own personalised fairway. It’s not point and flick game either, just a fractional increase or decrease in swing power can drastically alter the course of a hole, making it something of a fine art. With a bit of practice you can perform chip shots, tee shots and some pretty tricky putts and, because it’s all magnetised, you’ve got at least some chance of getting a hole-in-one.

Magnetic Golf could be a physical version of a time killer, and at least you don’t have to fool around with Excel desktop backgrounds in order to fool your boss – be bold enough to tell them you’re taking five in order to get a better grasp on the future money-spinning ideas for the company.

Planon is back, better than ever with their new DocuPen Xtreme X-Series line of scanning pens that will come in the form of the X05, X10 and X50, where any one of the three will bring portable scanning power to the next level of efficiency. Capable of supporting image resolutions of up to 600 dpi (up to 1,200 dpi for the X50), all three of them will be powered by a 200MHz internal processor, which is superior to previous scanning pen processors that will not go beyond the 60MHz mark. At 200MHz, this makes the DocuPen X-Series the fastest line of pocket-sized scanners on the market to date.

Apart from that, several new additions to the DocuPen X-Series line would be the introduction of 64MB SDRAM onboard memory for superior speed and functionality when working in tandem with the 200MHz processor. The inclusion of Bluetooth connectivity also allows all three of the DocuPen X-Series scanners to connect sans wires to smartphones, notebooks, netbooks and PCs for easy editing, storage and/or email attachment. Planon has also thrown in a brighter OLED screen display which makes it easier to navigate through the pens’ functions even for beginners, while boasting a Lithium-Polymer battery that is not only lighter but could potentially last longer compared to the Lithium-Ion scanner batteries used in its predecessors.

Rest assured you will get extremely accurate imaging with the use of Planon’s Crystal Line Contact technology, where the Xtreme X-Series scanning pens are able to exceed the performance of cameras and other portable scanners where professional reproductions of contracts, receipts, invoices and color pictures among others are concerned. Both the X-Series X05 and X10 models will be able to scan in monochrome and 24-bit color modes, while the X50 goes one up by having additional features including higher resolution and grey scale modes. All of them offer USB 2.0 connectvity for battery recharging and data transfer. Prices start from $369.99.

If you were a true New Yorker, you would probably just walk on by, assuming you even noticed him in the first place.

As an “out-of-towner”, I probably would just assume that this man had some disability that required him to wear metal braces on his neck and…backside, and would probably not ask him about it.

Actually, this man is asleep. That’s right, he is on the Vertical Bed, and all those braces are designed to attach to an ordinary subway grating. This very tired chap tried it out in NYC, and he actually got forty good minutes of shut-eye.

Personally, I think this is the sign of the times. I mean, I have taken naps on libraries, coffee houses, and other public places that are not ideal for napping, but I would have to be very tired in order to consider this vertical napping accessory.

Honestly, I just don’t think that humans were meant to sleep standing up like horses. Not only that, but what is prevent pickpockets from robbing these easy targets?

This Vertical bed is just a concept for now, but it comes with noise-canceling headphones, sunglasses, and a free-standing umbrella. It is all made to fit compactly into the suitcase that you see attached to the standing napper.

Although the first thing most people notice is the nauseatingly pink color of this lamp, the lamp does actually have plenty to offer. I’m one that dislikes the idea of being stuck completely in the dark whenever the power goes out and it actually happens quite a bit. This lamp doesn’t use power in the same way that your average lamp would. Instead, it plugs into your phone jack.

The phone jack will keep this environmentally friendly light powered. Now, if the phone line goes down too then you’re kind of hosed. At least it’s something though. The durable plastic lamp has 8 white LED lights. It has your usual switch to turn the light on and off. All around, it’s a pretty basic lamp, the big feature on it is the alternate power source. Plus the fact that it’ll only cost you $4.69 from Ux Sight.

I once worked at a place that required me to have an ID card. I had to swipe it just to prove that I had showed up to work, and I couldn’t even get through the front door without it. If I forgot my ID card, it was a big hassle to explain myself to human resources, not to mention the waiting for someone to open the door for me.

This is just one of the reasons why I don’t work for “the man”. I can just see “the man” of the future implementing mandatory Face Detecting Time Attendance System and Access Door Lock (CVJB-G107) at the workplace.

Essentially, this apparatus keeps track of your employees arrivals and departures with face-detection technology. It only takes a fraction of a second to scan the face, and the worker will be logged in for attendance, overtime, and even late employees. All that information can then be downloaded into a flash drive, and tallied up whenever paychecks come out. Don’t ask me how it can keep track of employees who go out for lunch.

Just so you know, the CVJB-G107 takes a 3D scan of the face. So if you are trying to fool it by holding out a picture of yourself in order to open the door, it won’t work.

If you have an office that would be improved by this tech, then you should be able to purchase it at the Chinavision site for about $480.00.

Visioneer is a well known name and a leader in intelligent document imaging solutions, having announced their latest device known as the Strobe 500. What is the STrobe 500, exactly? Well, it is a new mobile duplex color scanner that comes with a docking station that was developed with dual platform support for Windows and Mac operating systems. It will boast a 20-page automatic document feeder (ADF) alongside the capability to scan at 15 ppm/30 ipm. When left undocked, the scanner is still capable of operating via USB- or wall-power as a sheetfed scanner. As for its front feed slot, that is able to accept documents from letter/legal/A4 size to photos, receipts and plastic ID cards, basically anything that falls under its compatible size range.

Thanks to the incorporation of Visioneer OneTouch technology, the Strobe 500 scanner enables users to scan to the “destination” of their choice by pressing a single button. This simple movement does away with multiple steps that are normally associated when it comes to saving scanned documents in popular file formats. Visioneer OneTouch gives you the freedom and flexibility to scan documents to your choice of 6 preset yet completely user configurable destinations, allowing your documents to be scanned with the correct settings under a variety of settings including resolution, color, cropping and file format, followed by delivery to virtually any compatible application, folder or device. This is all made possible via the push of a single button.

Expect the Visioneer Strobe 500 to retail for $399.99, where it will come bundled with the ADF-equipped Docking Station. For those who want to pick up the Strobe 500 sans its docking station, they will fork out $50 less, although that wouldn’t really make much sense since the docking station will retail for $99.99 as a standalone peripheral. All purchases will be accompanied by software and drivers that support Windows 7, Vista, and XP, as well as Mac OS X 10.4 and above including Snow Leopard.

With that in mind, the Restman computer armrest series is touted to offer comfortable, ergonomic computer arm supports that make sure the forearm and elbow will obtain ample support whenever the keyboard and mouse are used. Currently available in Japan and Germany, there are three models to choose from :-

Restman 1	Double attachment arm support with mouse pad that can be attached to the desk or the chair.

Restman 2 A simple, comfortable swiveling arm support that works!

Restman M Computer arm support with a detachable massager. Yes, this is the worlds’ first and only arm support of its kind!

A detachable massager, eh? That sounds pretty interesting! Gamers who spend hours honing their skills might also want to consider this, but expect your street cred to fall if your friends discover your comfortable ’secret’…

It looks like it would be quite a comfortable chair, doesn’t it? Of course, if you are claustrophobic, you probably don’t want it closing you up. There is a picture of this closed mobile cocoon after the jump.

This is the “Media Vehicle”, a virtual reality chair/capsule created by Iwata-Yano Laboratory at the University of Tsukuba. The purpose of the spherical screen is so that the user can be in a virtual reality environment.

There are various uses of this device, and most of them seem plucked from science fiction. I could easily see this being used as some sort of simulator with today’s technology. I’m not certain if we have the technology to create anything more.

I believe the wheels are for it to move around, but I can’t imagine what for. Unless you want to create a virtual bumper car or something.

I can totally see workplaces of the future putting their workers in these things as some sort of distraction-free cubicle. I can also just see them running Windows 17 with hundreds of applications at work inside this cozy habitat. I’m not certain that I want to see this future come to pass, though.

If you have a co-worker that really just needs paid back for their charming personality, here’s the way to do it. It’ll allow for you to sneakily drive them crazy, but not do any actual harm to their computer. This USB drive can be jammed into the back of the computer where they’re highly unlikely to find it, unless they should inspect the back. However, by that time you’ll have gotten at least a little enjoyment out of their frustration.

The USB drive has a time delay, so it gives you plenty of time to get away from their computer before it starts causing trouble. Once it does start working it’ll turn the caps lock on and off, type out random text and phrases as well as make the mouse make random movements. I’d be careful who you play this trick on though, if they find out it was you they’ll be itching for revenge. Right now there’s not any pricing information, but you can expect to see more on the Thumbs Up website at the end of the month.

This is why Philips is working on a device known as the “Rationalizer”, a device that serves as a “mirror for your emotions”.

Here is the concept behind this concept device. The user wears an Emobracelet on their wrist which measures the “arousal component of the user’s emotion through a galvanic skin response sensor”. This EmoBracelet is synced wirelessly with the EmoBowl, a bowl with lighted patterns to show a user’s emotional readout. The range is a soft yellow, orange, or deep red.

When the user sees that the bowl is flashing red, that is like an alert. It signals to the user that they should take a break before making a decision that might be primarily based on intense emotions rather than study.

I can see the benefits of this for investors, but I think anyone in any position where big decisions are made could easily wear one as well. I can see bosses of the future have this lighted bowl on their desk. I fear the worker who is in the room when it turns red. Chances are, that worker might be seeing pink, in the form of a slip.

HP will be making a splash in the world of multitouch computing by unveiling a trio of HP TouchSmart PCs alongside the company’s very first 42″ high-definition digital signage touch display known as the HP LD4200tm. The new HP TouchSmart PC range will comprise of various screen sizes that range from 20″ to 23″ (that’s not pretty wide, but it ought to be good enough for most desktops) in the form of the HP TouchSmart 300 and HP TouchSmart 600. Both models will come in a sleek, award-winning design which can come with either a stunning HD-capable or HD widescreen display with a multitouch enabled screen.

With a multitouch display, users are able to enjoy an infinitely better experience compared to the iPhone and all of its iterations, where one is able to pinch, rotate, arc, flip, press or drag a finger across the screen of the PC in order to access information, entertainment and social networks in a natural and intuitive way. It would be interesting to see whether multitouch will introduce a whole new generation of computer users from the retired age range though. Apart from that, you can still navigate through standard circumstances that rely on a wireless keyboard and mouse.

You will be able to take advantage of the new swivel stand and tilt webcam that increases the user’s ability to share and collaborate around the HP TouchSmart when engaged in a video call, where you can work without having to worry about polluting the environment thanks to compliance with ENERGY STAR 5.0 requirements. Apart from that, selected models of the HP TouchSmart 600 will connect easily to gaming consoles, including Xbox, PlayStation and Wii, via HDMI or composite video ports. Interested in any of them? The HP TouchSmart 300, HP TouchSmart 600, HP TouchSmart tx2 and HP TouchSmart 9100 will start from $899, $1,049, $799 and $1,299, respectively. Release dates will be different though, from now all the way till December this year depending on the model.

How about scaring the pants of those who are weak-hearted and yet work late into the night all alone? The Eviltron from ThinkGeek fits the bill berfectly.

This fiendishly small device features six creepy sound choices perfect for frightening your “friends” and co-workers. Simply choose your favorite sound (or use the random mode), place it in a dark hiding spot and watch the madness begin. Perfectly suitable for dorm, office and home use. Or try putting it in someone’s car – that gets them every time.

Among the sounds available include some unsettling creaking, unidentifiable scratching sounds, gasping last breaths, a sinister child laughing and an eerie whisper of “Hey, can you hear me?” – turn on the Random Mode if you’re going to have some real fun. Retailing for $9.99 each, it will be able to last for slightly more than a month of continuous use.
Lexmark is an old hand when it comes to printer technology, and their latest T656dne single-function monochrome A4 (8.5″ x 11″) laser printer will be the first in the industry to come with the current rage these days – a touch screen display. What’s the point of this, you ask? Well, we will take a look at it in greater detail after the jump, but before we do that, we will provide a further introduction of the T656dne. Utilizing Lexmark’s award-winning Embedded Solutions Framework (eSF), the T656dne is able to offer businesses the ability to tap into its powerful solutions platform and function more efficiently as eSF is able to expand the usefulness of the T656dne by meeting specific needs within the business.

Apart from the Lexmark T656dne monochrome laser printer to enable solutions capabilities for large workgroups, it is also able to offer access to preloaded and customizable applications with but a simple touch of an icon on the touch screen display. Once the Lexmark T656dne is powered up, users can access a variety of unique applications available from the 7″ color touch screen including the following :-

Forms and Favorites, which reduces waste associated with preprinted forms

Eco-Settings, which helps increase energy savings and reduce wasted pages and toner

Showroom, which demonstrates the possibilities of using the touch screen as a unique communications medium

Change Background, allowing businesses to display a company logo or personalize the background image

Change Language, which can be enabled during setup, allows users in multilingual environments to easily change the display language

Expect the Lexmark T656dne to churn out up to 55 pages per minute (ppm), and interestingly enough, it will even come with an internal 80GB hard drive that will store all the tailored software applications while providing ample storage capacity. If you’re a home user you might not want to pick this up and settle for something more entry-level, however small businesses and home office setups might want to consider the Lexmark T656dne printer if one does handle monochrome documents from time to time.

Well, just in case the undead start walking about one of these days (with you sleeping soundly throughout the events that led to such a catastrophe), you’ll surely be pleased to know then that all the practice and tactical training that you and your buds went through with the Zombie Shooting Gallery would have paid off.

Take aim with the included laser assault rifle and blast the zombies as they pop up from the windows of the dark mansion. Too slow and they dine on the human hostages inside. Remember, practice hard…not much time before the real hell spawn arrive to feast on flesh of the living.

Powered by 9 AA batteries, the $34.99 Zombie Shooting Gallery will come with an electronic and mechanical shooting gallery which lets you practice your undead killing skills by using the included assault rifle which shoots a laser that can be detected by the zombie targets. Should you miss, the zombie will devour a human hostage represented by a red silhouette in an upper window. As time progresses, zombies get faster and faster, so hold your nerve and make sure your high score on the LED display stays!

Western Digital seems to be on a roll lately, rolling out its new My Book Elite desktop external drives that boasts something most of other external hard drives from different manufacturers don’t – a customizable e-label which will remain visible even when there is no power supplied to the unit. Yes sir, this means it allows you to check out at a glance what is on the drive exactly alongside how much storage space you have left available to upload those naughty pictures you copied from the office server to your thumb drive while you’re at work. Users who pick up the new My Book Elite will also benefit from the inclusion of WD SmartWare software that offers automatic and continuous backup to make sure all your data within remains safe and sound most of the time (there are no guarantees in the world, but we’re pretty sure for most folks, this is as safe as it gets for a commercial solution). Accompanied by 256-bit hardware-based encryption, you can be sure that the new My Book Elite desktop external drives won’t disappoint when it comes to performance and capability.

New users will be pleased to know that whenever the My Book Elite drive is plugged in for the first time, a simple and intuitive first backup process will initialize. It features a real-time visual interface of WD SmartWare software that offers users a reassuring view of their backup as and when it happens. Once the initial backup system runs, users’ files will be backed up automatically every time there is a change or a file is added to a particular directory. To up the ante security-wise, you will find a combination of user-selected password protection with 256-bit hardware-based encryption to be more than sufficient to prevent unauthorized data theft.

Depending on your budget, you can bring home the new My Book Elite drives in various capacities that range from 1TB to 1.5TB and 2TB, where each purchase will be accompanied by a 3-year limited warranty.
