AT&T to introduce more Windows Phone handsets
Right now when you mention the word ‘smartphones’, most of us would veer to either the iOS platform or the Android-powered handset – with perhaps some people still backing up RIM’s BlackBerry device. Symbian is more or less the stuff of the ancients and Nokia does not seem to be doing much to bring it back to its former glory, and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7? That is the dark horse in the race – somehow on paper, it does seem to have all the necessary ingredients to succeed, but in real life, that remains to be seen.
Hopefully it will not end up like the Zune which was a solid portable media player by all means, with great software to boot, but somehow, it simply failed to catch on in the mass market. Well, having said that, owning a Windows Phone at the moment might seem like a good idea, and if you are all stoked up to purchase one of these puppies, perhaps you might want to check out what AT&T has in store for you.

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G arrives at AT&T
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, or so the saying goes. If that is the case, then it is high time someone purchased the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G for Jack, don’t you think so? This smartphone will arrive over at Ma Bell’s network, where it intends to blur the line between handheld gaming consoles and smartphones. Current smartphones are rather powerful portable gaming machines by themselves, but so far if you were to compare the depth and quality of games, smartphones tend to drift towards the casual gaming side of things (which could be far more lucrative btw).
Well, the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G intends to merge the worlds of gaming and communications in a single device, where it will combine a PlayStation-certified gaming device with the capabilities and portability of an Android smartphone. Sounds tantalizing, does it not? Let us check out the hardware specifications after the jump to see if it can live up to expectations or not.

Verizon Wireless rolls out BlackBerry Torch 9850 smartphone
Smartphones are dime a dozen these days – in fact, if you do not own a smartphone, you might get funny looks whenever you pull out your handset from the jacket pocket. Feature phones are the staple of developing countries and those who are on an extremely tight budget, so smartphones are the way to go if you want to remain connected to the rest of the world even when you’re on the go. Having said that, the BlackBerry family has certainly done its part to propagate the use of smartphones worldwide.
Today, Verizon Wireless has announced a new family to their stable of BlackBerry phones, which would be the BlackBerry Torch 9850 as it arrives online and in brick-and-mortar stores later this September 8th. Just what is so special about the BlackBerry Torch 9850? Well, it is touted to be the BlackBerry with the highest resolution count and largest display to date, not to mention having the spanking new BlackBerry 7 operating system running in the background.

Sonim XP3300 Force is a world record holder
Forget about Gorilla Glass – that seems to be hyped up technology that still fails to prevent cracks on your smartphone’s display when you experience a sudden case of butterfingers (because you were too cheap to pay for a protective case made out of rubber, hence your sweaty palms causing you to be the cause of such a slip). Sonim knows that phones can be hardier – and it would be best if they were, hence the company has introduced the Sonim XP3300 Force.
Just what makes the Sonim XP3300 Force so different that it has been officially certified to be the “World’s Toughest Phone” by the Guinness World Records hall of fame? Well, you can always check out the video of it falling onto concrete from a really impressive height (25 meters, no less!) after the jump, but we will look at the specifications of the Sonim XP3300 Force in further detail in the extended post.

SmartKeyboard concept gives your iPhone a touchable keyboard
It seems that touchscreens are here to stay, and I’m certain that touchscreen keyboards will be our future. I’m guessing that the next generation or two will be fully used to touchscreen keyboards with no haptic feedback.
Until then, you can use this SmartKeyboard for your iPhone. This is a concept designed by Jing Yang of the eico Motion Lab in China.
You can see it in action on the video after the jump, and how it sticks onto the bottom of the iPhone. The user now has what they wanted in an iPhone: buttons. Why, it’s practically a BlackBerry.

Nokia 701 brightens up your day in a way you can never imagine
Most smartphones these days come in the touchscreen variety, and it goes without saying that regardless of how big you were a player in the phone industry some time ago, you’ve gotta keep up with the times if you were to survive. Nokia is battling against losing its market share, and in their latest effort, they decided to release a smartphone that has one superlative in it – the Nokia 701, which is touted to have the brightest smartphone display available to date.
This claim by Nokia is made possible thanks to the 3.5″ IPS LCD display that features ClearBlack technology, where it will work in tandem to create a combination of unprecedented brightness as well as contrast. Sporting the highest number of NITs where smartphone displays are concerned, it is also hardy in its own right, with Corning Gorilla Glass covering it so that you need not worry about a single drop shattering it in all ways to Sunday.

Zapparel augmented reality clothes
I have reported on a lot of terrific augmented reality stuff, and this Zapparel is something that is a long time coming.
This is the creation of Zappar and Hybrid Apparel, and there is a video after the jump so you can see how it works. I highly recommend watching it because it looks quite neat.
There are 20 different T-shirts, and there should be more coming out if this is a hit. I’m not certain whether or not people are willing to stand still while another scans them with an iPhone or Android device, but the video shows that the results are worth it!

Celluon virtual laser keyboard also has sound
I never thought that I could get used to those laser-powered virtual projection keyboards. While I think it would be handy to pair a device with something that would create a keyboard on any flat surface, I need the haptic feedback of the clickity-click of the keyboard.
I know that I should just evolve out of this, because touchscreen keyboards are quiet, and I think we are moving away from traditional button keyboards. Fortunately, I can wait a little while to get over my fascination with keyboard sounds as the Cube Laser Virtual Keyboard comes with gesture recognition software so that the user can hear the click to indicate control gestures as well as keystrokes.
