Mobile Masts in Airships

July 13th, 2006 by Al in Mobile Phones, Solar Powered Gear, Tech News

Airship MastEarlier this year in the UK there was a big palaver about mobile phone masts (or receivers, transmitters, what ever) being “hidden” in the signs of garage forecourts. I don’t think anything came of it, maybe ESSO lost a few pence off the share price though I’m sure they’ve made up for that and then some. A Swiss inventor has come up with a new idea that may make mobile masts a thing of the past… Read the rest of this entry »

Samsung’s Braille mobile phone

July 5th, 2006 by Paz in Mobile Phones, Tech News

Samsung Touchpad Messenger

Samsung have been awarded a prestigious Gold Award by the Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) for their mobile handset, which features a Braille touch pad.

The mobile phone, known as the Touch Messenger, was developed by Samsung Design in China, a country which has 9 million visually impaired people. I had a look at the Samsung press release page, and they’re clearly very proud to have won 19 such awards in the last 5 years, making them the company with the highest total number of IDEA awards, but let’s have a closer look.  Read the rest of this entry »

6x zoom telescope for a mobile phone camera

July 4th, 2006 by Paz in Mobile Phones, Photography, Spy Stuff

6x telescopic lens for a mobile

I don’t know why no one’s thought of this before. It’s a mobile phone case mod, which replaces the standard camera lens with a 6x zoom lens. To install the zoom lens, simply remove the standard shell and, replace it with the new one fitted with the built-in lens.

Cellphone Fuel Cells Available to Buy

June 30th, 2006 by Al in Electronic Gadgets, Mobile Phones

Mobile Fuel Cell There has been talk of fuel cells replacing (or complimenting) rechargable batteries for some time now, well it looks like they are now a reality for cellphones.

The Fuel Cell Store are selling kits for various cellphone models and PDAs. You don’t run your gadgets off the fuel cells instead you use it to get up to 4 re-charges of your regular batteries. They’re not cheap $39 for the kit ($10 for replacement fuel cells), but if you’re stuck miles away from a power outlet or Chargebox could be a real gadget save.

Available from Fuel Cell Store [via].

Nico Mobile Phone

June 30th, 2006 by Stephen in Mobile Phones

Nico Mobile Phone

Every kid has a mobile phone these days. Children use mobile phone to be cool, take pictures, text friends and call their dad for a lift home. With phone theft on the increase and radiation fears, its no wonder that parents are dubious about giving their child a mobile phone. Where do they get the money from to pay for all the texts they send? I can barely afford to pay for them myself never mind a minor.

Mosquito Ringtone

June 29th, 2006 by Al in Mobile Phones

Mosquito RingtoneI heard of this a couple of months ago, well to be more precise I’ve not heard it because I’m too old. The Mosquito Ringtone AKA Teen Buzz is a mobile ringtone that only kids can hear.

The tone is 17KHz and as our ears lose the ability to hear high frequencies as we get older it means this ringtone can not be heard by the over 20s. So when you’re teenage years are ending you’ll have to ask your self the question, “Am I getting really unpopular or am I becoming an old git”. I can imagine a bunch of 20 year olds either bragging that they’re too old and cool to hear it or pretending they still can as they ain’t that old yet.

So far teen buzz has a couple of uses:

  • Kids can have their phone go off in class without their teacher knowing, not sure about the use of that as they can’t exactly answer it unless they whisper in Mosquito
  • Shops can blast out really load 17KHz sounds to deter the hoodies, though I must admit I could see that resulting in a broken window or 2

Have a look here for free ringtones (a site of a friend) but if you can’t hear anything you can’t really complain.

Gadget Power Station

June 29th, 2006 by Al in Electronic Gadgets, Home Gadgets, Mobile Phones, iPod gadgets

Gadget PowerStationIn my house there always seems to be at least one gadget be it phone, laptop, roomba, iPod, camera, the list goes on. Not only does this mean there is a tangle of cables lying around but I often seem to lose chargers.

The PowerStation Cable Organizer aims to solve these problems, by hiding your chargers and most of the accompanying cables and holds your gadgets in place whilst they are charging. A bit like a ChargeBox for your home.
