Windmill Cellphone Charger

Imagine camping in the wild and an emergency happens. Luckily, you discover you have a cellphone signal! In the wild no less! But the bad news is, you’re battery has just died as you reach 911. Too bad you didn’t have a way wind charge that GPS cellphone so rescue workers could find you.

Well, you have to applaud the effort in creating this wind powered cellphone charger. A mini windmill weighing a feathery 150 grams sits atop your tent.

IPhone application page allows MacHeads to try before they buy

June 19th, 2007 by James in Mobile Phones, Tech News, iPod gadgets

iPhone Applications List

Trying to avoid the hype of the iPhone has proven to be no easy task. Especially with our report today that this Apple gadget has been upgraded even before it initially ships.

The beef is that Apple hitched it’s fortunes to Cingular/ATT. I was a Cingular customer for about 5 years and finally got fed up with an average of 3 dropped calls every time I wanted to talk to someone. I got excuses of “we’re spending millions upgrading the network, please be patient,” and the even though they would credit me for the dropped calls, the service simply never got better. So I fled and went to Sprint and never looked back.

So, for awhile now, I’ve avoided the iPhone hype simply because I didn’t want to be married to Cingular for two years no matter how cool Apple’s phone is. But it’s getting more and more difficult to ignore the hype that is turning this phone into a juggernaut. Witness iPhone Applications - a site that cagily offers a try before you buy with third party iPhone software.

Apple iPhone receives upgrade before official release

June 19th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Mobile Phones

iphone-release.jpg

While this has been done before, the fact that the iPhone is from Apple draws even more attention. Yes sir, Steve Jobs and company have decided to prep up the iPhone with even better specifications than originally intended in order to please the iPhone camping crowd (camping out for a console or movie ticket are pretty normal things, but for a cellphone?!? That’s practically unheard of until now) when Apple’s sophomore cellphone effort is released this June 29th.

The cheapest 5.0 megapixel cameraphone?

June 18th, 2007 by Andi in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Mobile Phones, Photography

ct-6618 front small
Browsing the sites of Brando Workshop I stumbled across the ‘CT-6618′. It’s a pretty standard Chinese-Touchscreen-Phone, but it has some notable exceptions.

Even if it’s priced high compared to the other anonymous Chinese phones, compared to known brands it’s very, VERY cheap. However, if it’s reliable enough to last for 6 months, it would definitely be worth its money, given its features.

Read on for the low-down:

Bluetooth watch now up for grabs

June 16th, 2007 by Edwin in Mobile Phones

m300-watch-phone.jpg

Remember the Dick Tracy comic? The protagonist back then had one of the coolest gizmos around (if you discount Inspector Gadget who got the whole gizmo wizardry thing going) - a cellphone built into a wristwatch. For the benefit of our younger readers, cellphones weren’t something that was always around. They just started to make an appearance commercially in the 80s, where the user had to lug around a large transmitter wherever they went. Cellphones also came in a large form factor that could probably fit around 10 Motorola RAZRs inside. Gadgets maven Brando has made available the M300 wristwatch cellphone for all and sundry, so let us take a look at what this handset has to offer.

Cell Phoney too late for April Fool’s party

June 16th, 2007 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Mobile Phones

cell-phoney1.jpgCellphones are pretty much a double-edged sword when it comes to communication, but sometimes people around tend to abuse this communications tool at the most inappropriate moments. You still see idiots yakking away at the cinema or library, while others pay the dead no respect, letting their latest Akon ringtone drown out the funeral band’s rendition of “Amazing Grace”. The Cell Phoney is one device that would have such folks scrambling for their handsets - only if it came out during the early days of mono ringtones. I suppose this $9.99 device is seen as outdated, since lacks support for polyphonic and MP3 ringtones. It ought to do well in developing nations where there are still plenty of mono ringtone handsets being circulated.

NES gaming on the go, and not on a Nintendo

June 13th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets, Mobile Phones

nes-phone.jpg

I do know that plenty of portable media players from China and Taiwan (those generic models that come with different names) do ship with an NES emulator that let’s you play hundreds of gaming classics from the 8-bit era, but most of the time the processor in those portable media players aren’t up to snuff, and your Mario will probably suffer from lag as well as dropped sounds. Heck, I’ve even seen him enter a transparent pipe before due to poor coding! The latest device to ship with an NES emulator is not a portable media player but a cellphone instead.

Shake, rock, and roll to new DoCoMo handsets

June 6th, 2007 by Edwin in Mobile Phones

docomo-sake-rock-roll.jpgWhen Nintendo first announced that their Wii console will come with motion sensitive controls, many people put it down as a gimmick. In hindsight, that was a pretty foolish thing to do considering how the Wii is doing gangbusters in terms of sales all over the world. NTT DoCoMo of Japan has studied the Wii closely and will incorporate gesture recognition technology into a couple of cellphones under the FOMA 904i line.
