Verizon Touch sheds some fat

Verizon Wireless wants to hop on board the touch screen bandwagon by carrying the Verizon Touch (the HTC Touch in essence), joining other carriers (Sprint, Telus Mobility, Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless) save for AT&T who seems to sit pretty at the top of the heap where touch screen devices are concerned with the phenomenally successful iPhone. Verizon aims to stand out from the rest of the pack with its offering by making a white version available while slimming it down a wee bit compared to Sprint’s version. The Verizon Touch has been slated for a March release at a yet undisclosed price.

Bicycle Powered Mobile Phone Center
Talk about going green with the Bicycle Powered Mobile Phone Center. This transporting phone center does not need any AC power in order to juice up exhausted batteries, and the best part is the battery can also be charged whilst the unit is stationary. Here’s an excerpt on how it works.
The one essential thing that a cell phone has that a call shop doesn’t is a battery, so using parts found in a junk yard we created a constantly recharging battery by pedal power. Electricity is generated as the person is traveling to his destination, if the battery runs low at the destination he can drop the kick stand and start cycling in place. Generating electricity from pedaling allows us to travel to the central park, a remote town or a big festival increasing access to inexpensive telephony anywhere. Because this bike is built for the developing world we had to use parts that could be easily found. To generate the electricity we used an old car alternator that sends the electricity generated to a car battery. The electricity stored in the battery is accessed by an old computer UPS to convert the electricity to 110V.

AT&T woos customers for Valentine’s Day

I know it is a little bit early to start shopping for Valentine’s Day, but hey – you can never be too sure, especially in this day and age when you might just get swamped with too much work at the last minute to have enough time to pick up a present for your other half. AT&T wants to make sure you have no problems with your partner come February 14th, offering a trio of handsets that will be extremely hard for your wallet to resist. The three red colored cell phones on offer are the LG Shine, the Samsung BlackJack II and the BlackBerry Curve 8310. These three can’t be found on any other carrier since they remain exclusive to AT&T, and this time you get to kickstart Valentine’s with plenty of romantic red.

Nokia N95 8GB gains DLNA certification

Nokia is proud to announce that its vaunted N95 8GB cell phone is the first in the world to receive Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) certification. For those who are not in the know (I was certainly one of the unenlightened ones before I came across the press release anyways), DLNA is a body advocating the interoperability of wired and wireless consumer devices. What does this certification mean for the consumer? For starters, DLNA certification would mean “convenient and intuitive connectivity” between your future DLNA Certified home electronics devices, including personal computers, and your Nokia N95 8GB.

WYWH.mobi Gives You Postcards from the Cell Phone

The picture to the left is simply a scan of a postcard that I received in the mail, and there are several things that make this picture special.
The first thing is that it depicts a handsome blogger who visited CES 2008 in Las Vegas, and is holding up a genuine Las Vegas napkin as “proof that I was here”.
The second thing is that the postcard is made from a picture from a cell phone. However, there was no work downloading the picture to a PC, or taking the time to print it out with a caption. All that it took was sending the picture from a cell phone to WYWH.mobi, and then the postcard was printed elsewhere and sent to its destination.

Add a little extra zoom to your camera phone

How many times have you wanted to take a picture with your camera phone, but found that you were too far away to get a decent shot? Honestly, I can’t say that I’ve ever ran into that issue myself. However, if you’re one that loves to take pictures, but doesn’t actually carry a real digital camera then you’ll be pleased to see these telescopic lenses for your phone.

Invisible Shield by ZAGG Inc.

All right, I believe this will be my last CES 2008 related story. I mean, it really is getting kind of old.
Basically, one of my last experiences plays out like this: I was walking along, minding a lot of other booth’s business, when some representative from ZAGG Inc. shows me the Invisible Shield.
The Invisible Shield is essentially glorified cellophane tape, but it is designed to protect cell phones and other mobile devices, such as this iPod in the photo, from nicks and scratches.
How well does it work? Well, I admire the salesperson’s demonstration. He had a Tupperware container filled with screws, and he put his own phone in there. Then he shook it up for a while, and there was not a scratch on it.
I thought that was pretty impressive, so I asked them it can protect touch screens, such as the iPhone. They said it was perfect for it, and it was even good for removing smudges. All someone had to do was wipe the device coated with Invisible Shield on their sleeve, and it removes prints and smudges perfectly.

LG Rolls Out Three Cool Phones

While visiting the LG booth at CES, I got to check out the three highlight phones from the company. Some of these phones have received some CES awards for Innovations, and they are something to talk about.
The Voyager, for example, is breaking new ground as the first handset with an interactive touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard. Not only that, it has a cool retractable antenna for V CAST, as well as full HTML internet browsing. It also has dual speakers, a 2.0 megapixel camera/camcorder, and is Bluetooth capable.
The Venus is another pretty little number with two screens with interactive touch navigation. It also has a music player, 2.0 megapixel camera, and a microSD. Like the Voyager, it is Bluetooth and V-Cast ready.
The Shine is unique with a metallic finish, and is available in silver, red, and black. The screen is viewable from all sides, and has the 2.0 megapixel camera and Bluetooth capability.
