Copy DVDs for Your iPod

by methodshop

Did you get a lot of DVDs for Christmas? Want to watch them on your iPod? For years, the best DVD ripping program, Handbrake, was only available for Mac. But the unthinkable has happened. Handbrake has been ported for Windows. It’s still in the experimental beta stages, but you can download a PC version of Handbrake now.

If you are unfamiliar with Handbrake, it’s a GPL’d multiplatform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper/converter. Here’s a MethodShop.com tutorial on how to use Handbrake.

Features:

  • Can encode directly from DVDs (even encrypted ones) or from VIDEO_TS folders
  • Supports AC3, LPCM and MPEG audio tracks
  • Outputs MP4, AVI or OGM files
  • Outputs AAC, MP3 or Vorbis audio
  • Supports 2-pass encoding

Lipo! Without all that annoying cutting through your skin.

by Fred

Yes, Yes, I know, Liposuction,, it might not be the most fun way to spend a winter vacation. Some people do need, (lifesaving weight loss) to have Liposuction. However, it is a painful, and excruciating process that requires actual surgery to get to that “fat sucking” part of the show where the weight is removed.

After the delightful little process whereby they are cut open and fat is sucked out, there is a definite recovery time while the poor patients must heal from the pain, and likely bruising from the procedure.

Now there is a new process called Liposonix that will remove all that needless fat, and won’t leave you all scarred, bruised, and all recuperatey.

red dot design award – part 5

by Dan

bathroom.jpgThis is the fifth part of the series about the “red dot design award” (click here to read part 1, part 2, part 3 and part 4). In this post we will cover 3 product designs that won the award under the Productivity category:

Bathroom: this set of bathroom fixtures is really elegant, I was just puzzled about the reason to place a bathroom design under the productivity category… not that I am not productive when I take a nice book to the bathroom but anyway! The bathroom set was created by the Italian Vincenzo Catoio and apparently it was inspired by a lily flower: “The calla lily was the inspiration for the design of these bathroom fixtures, which are intended to create an environment of relaxation. The emphasis is upon the idea of the bathroom as a magical place for the care of the body – a space of soft, enveloping shapes.” Continue reading » red dot design award – part 5

Here’s what I want you Fruit creators!!! (this means you Ive)

by Fred

Yeah, so there are waaayy too many Apple Rumors coming around prior to Unky Steve’s upcoming announcements.

Sadly, I don’t want what’s likely to be offered, here’s what I want.

A Macbook Pro Tablet!!!

This is exactly what Apple has been missing (in my opinion), however, these are people that still sell mice with 1 button (umm what’s simpler than a stylus?)

As a designer, I have stayed away from the Apple platform due to it’s lack of interoperability with my beloved SolidWorks. It’s a solid 3d modeler that works great, and works with everything! (plus it’s compatible with the next engine, but this article isn’t about that).iphone with isight

Mac tablet

Here’s what we kinda know from Kevin Rose (digg.com)

there’s a 4Gb and 8Gb iPhone, they work with all the cell providers, one’s got a slideout keyboard, and one is a virtual clickwheel model.

What we know for sure is NOTHING!!! (I love that Apple can really keep a secret, it makes people drool needlessly! Hysterical!

So here’s what I want. (keep clicking kids!)

Sure it’s a blizzard, but the stove is on,, let’s blow hot air around!

by Fred

The Heatwave Wood Stove Fan from Northlineexpress.com which, from what I can tell, is where hot things come from. They’ve got fireplace and heating things of all kind. More importantly though, I’m focusing on the aftorementioned Heatwave Wood Stove Fan.

Here’s the reason we’re looking at it,, it’s got a Stirling engine inside!!!

So as not to confuse it with the crazy-insane commentator on the NFL Stirling Sharpe, it is not bipedal, nor crazy.

It is however a heater that is powered by the heat given off from your wood, gas, or pellet burning stove. This is interesting because it is taking advantage of exisiting thermal energy and does not require anything but a hot surface to activate.

While Mr. Sharpe does blow a lot of hot air out his mouth hole, it is likely below the 390 degrees F needed by the fan to blow 200-300 CFM (cubic feet per minute) around the room.

red dot design award – part 4

by Dan

boxer.jpgThis is fourth part of the “red dot design series”, if you have not check out part 1, part 2 and part 3. In this post we will cover the interesting gadgets that won the award under the Recreation category.

Boing Boing Boxer:
Designed by Park Sang Hyun and Kim Ji Ae this toy was created to enable kids to fight safely. It is produced with latex foam which should function as a shocking absorption material. The tagline of the product on the official site is “The Bong-Bong Boxer makes fighting fun and educational for pre-school children.” Well, I am not sure about your kids but the ones I see here in Brazil would definitely make some trouble with that boxing deal… Continue reading » red dot design award – part 4

red dot design award – part 2

by Dan

sonny.jpgThis is the second post covering the 2006 edition of the “red dot design award” (you can read the first part here). Today we will check out 2 winners of the “Life Science” category.

Sonny: When I was a kid injections used to scare the heck (to not say something else) out of me. With that problem is mind designers over the Zhejiang University of China created Sonny, a very innovative injecting equipment that should represent less of a threat to the young ones. The syringe comes with a small thumb toy on the top, which can be removed and rewarded to the kid after the injection is performed. The syringe is also supposed to inject the liquid with a push of the fingers instead of a pull of the thumb, giving the idea of something less invasive. Ultimate Bookends for ALL Star Wars Fans

by Al

Star Wars Bookends

I’m a bit of a Star Wars geek (though I’m not quite geeky enough (or rich enough) to own my own Stormtrooper costume), so these are probably the best bookends I’ve ever seen (not that I’ve ever been on the lookout for cool bookends), the Han and Greedo bookends.

Taken from the scene in the coolest bar of the galaxy, you have Greedo and Han having that fateful last discussion (and yes Han did shoot first) where only one will walk out alive (and make 2 move epic films in the Star Wars saga).

You can get booth bookends (which would work to support 6 DVDs too :) ) for $124.99 (probably the not so cool part but they are limited to 3,500 pieces) from Think Geek.
